The Relationship of the Teaching, Empowering, Leading and Learning (TELL) Survey Responses to Student Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in Math and English: Teacher Professional Development and Student Achievement
The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between changes in teachers’ professional learning conditions and changes in student achievement. The study examined conditions as measured by three state-wide administrations of the New Teacher Center’s Teaching, Empowering, Leading, and Learning (TELL) Survey in Oregon from 2014 to 2018 and contemporaneous student achievement data from Oregon state achievement tests, the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in Math and English. Participants were all 274 schools in Oregon with data for all administrations of relevant instruments. Data were disaggregated based on district and school size, poverty level, and English Language Learner (ELL) population. Analysis of study data were guided by three research questions: (a) how have measures of student achievement and teacher professional development changed over time in districts and schools in Oregon, (b) how do the changes in professional development correlate to student outcomes on the Smarter Balanced Assessment in Math and English, and (c) which professional development factor(s) are most closely related to or predictive of subsequent changes in student outcomes? Analyses included repeated measures analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA) for all instruments, analysis of variance (ANOVA) for both raw scores and calculated change scores, and correlation analysis among both raw and change scores within and between instruments. The study found strong within instrument correlations but few and weak correlations among SBA and TELL professional development measures during the study period. Implications for future study and professional development applications discussed include further research into outlier cases with strong improvement on both student achievement and professional development measures, more purposeful connection of professional development measures to professional development implementation, and more concrete connection of professional development to student learning
The Kinetics of Liberatory Pedagogy: An Exploratory Narrative Inquiry across Disciplines among Educational Activists of Marginalized Identities
The purpose of this research was to use narrative inquiry and found poetry to explore how educational activists of marginalized identities across disciplines embody liberatory pedagogy and to describe why they practice liberatory pedagogy, how liberatory pedagogy functions and what it could or does materializes when adopted from the perspective of five participants in formal and non-formal educational locations. The findings and implications of the exploratory outcomes and possibilities of adjustable replication is discussed. The analysis of the collected data discusses how data can impact the educational field for current of aspiring practitioners of liberatory pedagogy by means that act as a paradigm shift to Western oppressive practices of research
2019 UP Baja SAE Senior Capstone Project
Baja SAE is an intercollegiate engineering competition where teams design, manufacture and assemble an off-road vehicle that is to serve as a prototype for a recreational user market. The goal of the 2019 UP Baja team was to redesign the existing vehicle into a model that would be eligible to participate in the 2019 Baja SAE competition.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/egr_project/1018/thumbnail.jp
Parabolic Solar Trough
This team has designed and built a module parabolic solar troughs to produce hot water for an organic Rankine Cycle. This is a thermodynamic cycle that produces energy and requires a heated fluid to operate. A parabolic solar trough is a type of concentrating solar technology that directs sunlight at a focal line, heating the fluid inside.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/egr_project/1010/thumbnail.jp
Hyster-Yale Group Electric Aux Functions
Hyster-Yale Group is a forklift company with a development center just outside the Portland metro area. Currently, the company utilizes hydraulics to shift the forks in and out, and side to side (see Figure 1 below). The system in place has proven to be effective for years now, but leads to additional costs for Hyster-Yale’s customers, as the hydraulic cables in the system are prone to leakage and require frequent maintenance. Hyster-Yale Group is looking to develop an electric fork positioning system that will fulfill the same functionality as their tried-and-true hydraulic systems, while providing additional value to their customers by increasing the reliability and longevity of the system and therefore decreasing costs related to maintenance. Hyster-Yale Group believes that such a system will also make them a stronger contender in the forklift industry, given that the system meets a set of requirements, including cost, safety and ease-of-use, and minimizing the design of the current system (i.e. slimming down the truck, rather than adding more components to it). The goal of the project is to build a full-scale mock-up of a fork positioning device, that is entirely electrically-powered, and that shifts the forks side-to-side, both independently and together. The goal for the fall semester is to brainstorm ideas and build small-scale prototypes from individual design ideas, and then decide which idea is the best to move forward on for a full-scale project in the spring.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/egr_project/1007/thumbnail.jp
Empowering Ethical Practice: Activities for Access Services
The library profession is guided by a Code of Ethics which explains our values, including privacy, copyright and fair use, equal access, stewardship, and integrity. We continue to serve our publics and garner good will because libraries are perceived as institutions operating in an ethical manner. The Clark Library, University of Portland, desired to empower its staff with a deepened understanding of library ethics. The Access Services Unit, composed of Circulation, Interlibrary Loan, Course Reserves, Reference, Instruction, and a Digital Lab, implemented four activities to intentionally focus on ethics as applied to the day-to-day work of each unit
Juul Advertisement and its Large Appeal
As electronic cigarettes have become more and more popular with people who are in college I became curious as to what kind of advertisements these companies were using and why they were appealing to a certain age demographic. Considering this this paper looks a Juul advertising and why it might be appealing to children. This is a current problem that the company is navigating a the product has become ever increasing popular to teens and is problematic in increasing children smoking. While the company claims it is marketing to when their advertisements are analyzed it can show how they may appeal to a much wider audience
