    A first-year middle school science teacher\u27s experiences navigating science content in a Dual Language Immersion Program

    Dual Language Immersion Programs (DLIPs) are offered as a way to address the needs of the students in our classrooms with a primary language other than English and a way to promote multilingualism for both English learners and native-English speakers. This study examined a first-year middle school science teacher\u27s experi- ence teaching in a DLIP. The authors focused on the teacher\u27s challenges and how he handled the tensions between teaching science content and addressing issues of language development in a DLIP classroom envi- ronment. Based on classroom observations, pre- and post-year interviews, and weekly teacher reflections, themes emerged that reveal the teacher\u27s concern with teaching science in Spanish, the need for support from both administration and science content and DLIP mentors, students\u27 willingness to use Spanish, and the teacher\u27s lack of familiarity with DLIP curriculum and pedagogy, particularly in regard to balancing the teaching of content and language. This study provides implications for both teacher preparation programs and for DLIP school administrators

    LymphGo : Distal Limb Pressure Device

    This report provides an overview of the development and testing of a wearable, pneumatic distal limb pressure device, called “LymphGo”, designed to manage swelling in the calf caused by lymphedema. Lymphedema is caused by insufficiency or damage in the venous system, manifesting itself as swelling due to the buildup of lymphatic fluid, especially in the lower legs. Compression methods are currently the most common method of symptom management. These devices are either inadequate in redistributing fluid up the leg to alleviate swelling and cause painful ulcers due to consistent static pressure or completely immobilize the user to achieve adequate functionality. The device described in this report seeks to create a mobile, actively driven device to act as a middle ground between existing solutions to help manage or lessen the symptoms of lymphedema

    Transdisciplinary Learning: Investigating the Effects of an Adult Learning Class with a Neuroeducation Perspective on Adult Learners’ Identity, Perceptions of Learning, and Implementation Strategies

    Research shows that educators’ perceptions of learning are limited due to a variety of factors which include: a lack of neurobiological- and language acquisition-informed content and information incorporated within teacher preparation programs, educators’ learning experiences grounded in familiarity, and confusions between common educational learning frameworks, andragogy and pedagogy (i.e., K-12), surrounding appropriate learning tenets and effective learning practices for different-aged learners. However, one transdisciplinary model, neuroeducation, incorporates learning literatures from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and language acquisition and provides insight into the limitations of educators’ perceptions of learning and effective instructional practice. This study investigates the extent to which adults participating in a semester long course on adult learning theory with a neuroeducation approach to learning experienced changes in (a) perceptions of their identity; (b) perceptions of learning theory in professional and personal settings; (c) professional and personal implementation of learning theories; and (d) the perceived impacts of their implementations on those in their professional and personal settings. A narrative inquiry design captured responses from two groups of participants’ semistructured interview questions demonstrating that a neuroeducation perspective of learning positively impacted adult learners’ identity, altered their perceptions of learning for K-12 learners and for adult learners, led to implementation of visual-based learning strategies grounded in neuroeducation perspectives, motivated their colleagues to implement instructional changes, and positively impacted K-12 learners’ social and cognitive growth. Findings from this study signify a need for neuroeducation perspectives of learning within all levels of public and private education

    A Study of the Impact of Participating in the edTPA Process on the Assessment Practices of Novice Teachers

    Oregon student achievement continues to linger in the bottom of state rankings for assessment scores and graduation rates. Recent literature suggests that formative assessment and feedback are the most effective practices for improving student outcomes. Oregon has adopted the educative teacher performance assessment, or the edTPA which measures, among other abilities, teacher use of assessment practices. This mixed methods study explores the impact of the edTPA on the development of assessment practices of novice teachers by collecting data in two phases: an online survey and a one-on-one interview. The sample included 41 graduates of Oregon educator preparation programs from 2016, 2017, and 2018, and seven of the survey participants also participated in a follow-up interview. Through the data analysis four themes emerged: 1) novice teachers perceive that completing the edTPA had little to no impact on their current assessment practices, 2) novice teachers perceive that the edTPA was a waste of time or hindered the learning process for preservice teachers, 3) novice teachers did learn assessment practices, but from other sources, and 4) novice teachers interviewed for this study self-report the use best practices in assessment. The findings of this study indicate implications for pre-service teachers, educator preparation programs, and policymakers in Oregon and the need to further explore how to support the development of pre-service teachers’ assessment practices and effective implementation of the edTPA

    Making Solar Energy Sustainable: A Multidisciplinary Approach

    My Grand Challenges project is centered around making solar energy sustainable; not only technologically, but also economically and ethically. I’ve done a few different projects related to this goal, including some solar energy research with professor Heather Dillon, which carried over into my current senior capstone project. I chose to become a Grand Challenges Scholar because I wanted to dive deeper into solar energy and learn about it on more levels than just the engineering.     Characterization of temperature‐dependent hemin uptake receptors HupA and HvtA in Vibrio vulnificus

    The Gram‐negative pathogen Vibrio vulnificus produces several iron‐sequestration systems including a hemin uptake system in response to iron limitation as a means to acquire this essential element. Strains of this organism are capable of causing serious septicemia in humans and eels, where hemin is abundant and an advanta‐ geous source of iron. Vibrio vulnificus hemin uptake systems consist of HupA, a well studied outer membrane protein, and a recently identified HvtA protein receptor. In this study, we confirmed that the expression of the hvtA gene is iron‐regulated in a fur‐dependent manner. When analyzed for virulence in a hemin‐overloaded murine model system, the hupA gene was more important for establishing infection than the hvtA gene. Transcriptional profiling of these genes using strains of two different biotypes, biotype 1 (human pathogen) and biotype 2 (eel pathogen), showed that the expression of the two receptors was also regulated in response to temperature. The expression of hupA was highly induced in elevated temperatures in the human pathogenic strain when tested in iron‐depleted conditions. Conversely, hvtA expres‐ sion was induced significantly in the eel pathogenic strain at a lower temperature, a condition where the hupA locus was relatively repressed. Our results indicate that although both hupA and hvtA are involved for optimal hemin uptake in V. vulnificus, their expression is dually regulated by the environmental cues of iron concentration and temperature. Together, these data suggest that the virulence genes hupA and hvtA are tightly regulated and strictly induced during iron limitation combined with the physiological temperature of the host organism
