Mindfulness Promoting Blood Pressure and Stress Reduction in a Northwest Priest Community
Literature exploring burnout and stress among clergy is well-established, but recent research suggests this population may face higher risk for chronic comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease. A northwest priest community approached a local school of nursing requesting blood pressure screening and health promotion through nonpharmacologic interventions. The purpose of this project was to determine the effect of a mindfulness-based intervention on blood pressure (BP) and stress over a time period of eight weeks. Pre-treatment and post-treatment scores and BPs were compared and yielded a statistically significant improvement. Findings from this project inform the nurse practitioner’s care of individuals looking for cost-effective nonpharmacological treatment of hypertension

A Mixed-Methods Study Exploring Female College Students’ Perceptions of Factors that Influence Retention in Engineering Majors
This mixed-methods study identified factors and explored experiences that influenced the retention of women in engineering majors. This research contributes to the body of knowledge in the field of retention, specifically analyzing pre-college and college factors associated with Kerby’s conceptual framework that contribute to the development of critical engineering agency.
A survey was utilized to identify factors influencing the retention of female engineering majors in relation to male engineering majors. In addition the survey provided a way to conduct more purposive sampling for the qualitative piece of the study. Semi-structured interviews elaborated on the survey results and provided indepth insights into the topic through listening to student stories.
The pre-college and college factors and experiences combined to show the development of critical engineering agency over time and how that development influences women’s retention in engineering majors. Through the survey and interviews, the importance of representation and classroom/program climate on the retention of women in engineering majors is apparent and provides implications for practices to be implemented by high school and college administrators and faculty
First Principles: Designing Services for First-Generation Students
For many first-generation college students, traditional academic culture and structures can create barriers to their engagement on campus and academic success. To ensure that academic libraries are not also presenting unnecessary challenges to these students, first-generation needs and expectations should be important considerations in library service and facility design initiatives. Drawing on a multi-disciplinary literature review and a survey of high school counselors’ experiences advising first-generation students, the current study identifies common needs and challenges of first-generation students and provides correlated recommendations for how libraries can best equip themselves to meet those needs
