Integrative Physical Activity Intervention Strategies and Influencing Factors for Latina women
Latinas are at risk for not engaging in optimal levels of physical activity and are at greater risk than other ethnic groups for being overweight and suffering deleterious health consequences. Motivation to engage in physical activity is a complex issue for Latinas, and future research needs to examine the mechanisms of becoming more Americanized that may adversely affect Latinas’ physical activity levels. The concept and measurement of self-regulation is vital in addressing the significant health disparity attributable to sub-optimal exercise. Sustainable and successful interventions should be family-centered, social, and culturally-tailored as well as derived from triangulating data from multi-method research. By analyzing multiple methods together from different types of data, triangulation leads to a broader understanding and increases the overall applicability of the data gathered. Interventions meeting these criteria are, by nature, integrative as they encompass multiple aspects of motivation to engage in physical activity. This chapter will discuss effective strategies and factors associated with increasing engagement in physical activity among Latinas and the importance of understanding motivation in an integrative health context
Instructional Coaches’ Perspectives on Preparations for the Role as Coach
The pressure to improve instruction and teacher effectiveness continues to grow in our nation’s public elementary schools. As a means to achieve instructional improvements, school districts are increasingly adopting instructional coaching initiatives. This study explored instructional coaches’ perspectives on their preparation for the role of instructional coach. Mixed methods research was organized through a social constructivist lens that focused on the perspectives of the instructional coaches. The sample consisted of 50 public elementary instructional coach participants in Oregon who responded to a survey, and follow up interviews with ten participants. Data analysis led to several key findings. First, many elementary instructional coaches in Oregon do not feel prepared for their roles as coach. Second, Chi-Square analyses revealed that there were significant differences in instructional coaches’ feelings about their proficiency based on the number of hours per month of professional learning they experienced. Third, there are a variety of beneficial and relevant professional learning opportunities for instructional coaches. Fourth, instructional coaches desire clarity in their job descriptions. Overwhelmingly, participants expressed the absence of a clear description or definition for their instructional coaching role. Finally, according to
participants, there is a need to create higher education opportunities for instructional coaching in Oregon
Transformative Learning: The Role of Language in Supporting a Self-Reflective Process in a Context of Crisis
Research has shown that adult learning is a complex and integrative process that requires an interdisciplinary lens of study. Thus, to understand the cognitive dimensions of learning, a multidisciplinary approach is needed. This single case study aimed to examine how the role of language function in self-reflection supports the socio-cognitive and neurobiological processes associated with transformation through a model of neuroeducation that considers the role of language function. Based on a multidisciplinary review of transformative learning through the lenses of cognitive and cultural psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and language function, a reflective semi-structured interview protocol was implemented with six speech-language pathologists working in educational settings during COVID-19. The analysis of the responses demonstrated that the role of language function was associated with supporting relationships, self-reflection, and learning during a context of crisis. The results suggest how the role of language function contributed to the socio-cognitive and neurobiological processes associated with transformative learning. On this basis, it is recommended that organizations design nurturing, culturally and linguistically responsive learning environments that promote language as a tool for transformation
Market Leader - Real Estate Analytics
The Market Leader team implemented a machine learning model that clusters real estate agents into behavioral cohorts to determine how an agent\u27s behavior influences their success and their longevity as a Market Leader customer.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/egr_project/1065/thumbnail.jp
Tektronix - Remotely Aimed Radio Frequency and Video Monitor
The project utilizes a Tektronix Real-time Spectrum Analyzer, directional antenna, and a high-resolution camera to create a tool for Field Engineers to remotely monitor radio frequency signals. The product the team created allows the Field Engineer to collect and analyze radio frequency data while being able to identify its source all within the software package.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/egr_project/1092/thumbnail.jp
Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant: Water Reuse System Upgrade
The current water reuse system at the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant has been very problematic, and a new system is necessary to meet the demands of the plant and reduce the plants use of city water. The objective of this project is to design a new water reuse system to provide reliable reuse treatment capacity at the CBWTP for design flows of 4 MGD average and 6 MGD peak.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/egr_project/1093/thumbnail.jp
Learning Cloud Security with Thunder-CTF
This presentation talks about one of my central focuses during the ASE internship which is learning cloud security through a Capture-The-Flag(CTF) security game named Thunder-CTF. I explain the basic understandings of cloud security and why we need people to learn about it. I also talk about what Thunder-CTF is and how I created my own CTF level.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/ase_internships/1012/thumbnail.jp
Exploring Autism and Community Based Participatory Research at AASPIRE: Dissemination of Healthcare Outcomes Metrics and Participatory Methods
The presentation gave an overview of the summer\u27s work. It focused on three different projects that occupied most of the summer. The first was on dissemination of a healthcare metrics paper. The second was data collection of employment programs for autistic adults. The final project was a preliminary data analysis of the database of employment programs.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/ase_internships/1010/thumbnail.jp
Using Image Analysis to Quantify the Fire Performance of Penetrations in Cross-Laminated Timber
Cross-laminated timber is an exciting new building material enabling innovative construction technology. Its safe application in tall buildings is often supported by cutting-edge research. The goal of this project is to develop a method to quantify the effect of penetrations on the charring of cross-laminated timber during a fire through analysis of images taken after completion of standard fire penetration tests. A program was created that can analyze images and effectively differentiate between the charring effects of various types of penetrations. This presentation explores the methods employed in the program and the project\u27s results.https://pilotscholars.up.edu/ase_internships/1004/thumbnail.jp
