    Magnetic Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Applications in Life Sciences

    Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are multifunctional materials with superparamagnetic properties and tunable surface chemistries, making them valuable across diverse fields, such as biomedicine, environmental remediation, and agriculture. This review examines recent advancements in MNP synthesis, encompassing chemical, physical, and environmentally friendly methods while highlighting improvements in size, morphology, and composition control that enhance application-specific performance and environmental sustainability. The review discusses various architectures, including single-core, core–shell, hybrid composites, and stimuli–responsive systems, with an emphasis on their stability, scalability, and functionalization potential. In biomedical applications, MNPs show promise in targeted drug delivery, magnetic hyperthermia, and magnetic resonance imaging contrast enhancement, where biocompatibility, often achieved through green synthesis, is critical. In agriculture, iron oxide MNPs (Fe3O4) have been utilized as nanofertilizers and growth promoters, demonstrating the ability to improve seed germination, chlorophyll content, and root development in crops, such as maize and tomatoes, without exhibiting phytotoxicity. Despite these promising results, challenges remain in large-scale production, reproducibility, and regulatory acceptance. This review highlights the pivotal role of MNPs in advancing nanotechnology-driven solutions across the life sciences. Their evolving synthesis techniques, multifunctional properties, and cross-sector applications position MNPs as key enablers of next-generation technologies in diagnostics, therapeutics, environmental monitoring, and sustainable agriculture

    This article advocates for an inclusive approach to public speaking instruction by incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL). We describe an alternative assignment—“Telling Your Story”—that emphasizes narrative and multimodal expression through a gallery walk format. Designed to support neurodivergent students while benefiting all learners, the assignment reframes traditional speech models and offers a flexible, creative way to enhance public speaking skills.     Long-Term Degradation of Natural-Fiber Coir Turf Reinforcement Mat Installed Along an Urban Stream in South Carolina

    Nature-based (or “living”) solutions to shoreline restoration are attractive due to their positive contributions to ecosystem function and service provision in coastal and estuarine environments. However, non-biodegradable plastics are widely used in their implementation; for instance, plastic-based geotextile fabrics are used to stabilize soil and organic matter to prevent loss of sediment fill. Paradoxically, these polymer-based geotextiles intended to protect the estuarine environment are unintended sources of plastic pollution as they inevitably degrade over time. Consequently, there is significant interest in transitioning from synthetic polymer-based geotextiles to sustainable non-plastic alternatives. To begin addressing this compelling research opportunity, this project aims to quantify the long-term, in situ performance and degradation of coconut coir geotextile turf reinforcement mat installed in 2021 along an urban “living shoreline” in Columbia, South Carolina. Samples were destructively extracted from the installed mat at various locations throughout the site; subsequent mechanical testing and material analysis were performed to quantify mechanical property degradation and determine the underlying chemical and structural drivers of that degradation. The results of this study will be used to assess the suitability of natural-fiber alternatives for shoreline restoration applications, identify other potential use cases based on the geotextile’s projected integrity lifetime, and correlate the role of exposure variables (temperature fluctuation, moisture inundation, and solar irradiation) to the coir matting’s degradation

    The German Press\u27s Coverage of the Bavarian Freikorps

    The Freikorps (Free Corps) was a German paramilitary group that primarily consisted of former World War I soldiers who experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and continued their military combat by suppressing communist revolutions in Germany throughout the early Weimar Republic. My research investigates how the German press in Munich covered the Bavarian Freikorps’ swift removal of armed communists and their violence against German civilians during the suppression of the Bavarian Soviet Republic in May 1919. This news coverage influenced how a large portion of German civilians viewed and interacted with German veterans of World War I and the Freikorps after the war. Thus, this study demonstrates how important it is for the modern media to properly represent PTSD of contemporary American veterans and their role within the current political situation to the American public. For my research approach, I specifically examine the daily issues from the Münchener Post (Munich Post), a socialist newspaper, throughout the first two weeks of May 1919. These issues reported on the Freikorps’ first killings of armed communists in Munich, which allows me to evaluate how the Münchener Post initially viewed the Freikorps and how their perception changed throughout the Freikorps’ reign of terror. At first, the press neglected the violence of the Freikorps and portrayed them as dutiful soldiers that society desperately needed to combat the terrors of communism. Once the Freikorps started to kill innocent civilians, the press’s depiction of the Freikorps changed to a group of abusive soldiers. Recently within the secondary research, historians have established that German civilians were initially complacent towards the Freikorps but eventually displayed extreme disdain towards the group. Therefore, the German press’s depiction of the Freikorps will help us further evaluate this development of civilian attitudes towards the Freikorps
