Teaching with Challenged Books: Connections with Marianist Values
No full textThe focus of this reflective commentary is the use of banned and challenged books as the key reading assignment and pedagogical tool in teaching SOC 101, Principles of Sociology. Although it is estimated that the number of book challenges decreased between 2023 and 2024, there has been a significant increase since 2020, with many of the challenged books portraying issues central to the field of sociology. Starting in the fall 2024 semester, I have incorporated challenged books into my SOC 101 courses, with over 100 students being in those sections during the 2024-25 academic year. In this paper, I provide some background on book challenges, outline how the books are incorporated into the class, discuss connections between teaching the class with this approach and Marianist educational values, and share student reflections on their learning through the challenged books

Archaeological Ethics: Excavation of Human Remains
Get PDFI began by researching ethical issues across various career fields, but I had a challenging time choosing a topic. After some consideration, I landed on the excavation of the deceased in archaeology, which has always interested me. I consolidated my sources through JSTOR, the University of Dayton library database, and Google Scholar. I then determined the best scholarly articles and journals to support my argument. After analyzing each source, I began drafting my essay and later developed my first draft, which was peer-reviewed by my classmates. I then completed a second draft, and lastly I made some edits to produce my final paper

No full textCe qui a commencé fin 2016 comme une manifestation pacifique par des avocats et des enseignants dans les régions du Nord-Ouest et du Sud-Ouest du Cameroun a rapidement tourné à la violence et s\u27est transformé en ce qui qui est désormais connu sous le nom de crise anglophone du Cameroun. La protestation a été déclenchée par le sentiment de marginalisation de la région anglophone du Cameroun, qui représente 20 % des 29 millions d\u27habitants du pays. Le conflit a provoqué d\u27immenses destructions et fait de nombreuses victimes. L\u27armée camerounaise a répondu à la protestation par des arrestations et des tortures. Les voix qui appelaient à la sécession complète des régions anglophones de la République du Cameroun ont pris de l\u27ampleur. Ils ont créé une République virtuelle d\u27Ambazonie et un gouvernement intérimaire en exil, et ont promis de riposter. Ils ont formé une aile militaire, les Forces de défense de l\u27Ambazonie, qui a attaqué et perturbé les services économiques et sociaux de la région. En octobre 2024, plus de 1,8 million de personnes avaient besoin d\u27une aide humanitaire. Plus de 584 000 personnes ont été déplacées à l\u27intérieur du pays. Plus de 73 000 sont devenues des réfugiés au Nigeria, pays voisin. Plus de 6 500 personnes ont été tuées.
