    Automated System for Photonic Integrated Circuit Measurement

    In recent years, with the advent of mature miniature semiconductor fabrication processes, the photonic integrated circuit (PIC) has emerged as a potential solution for the increased power consumption and bandwidth of conventional electronic computing technologies. As low-energy, optical devices, PICs serve to bring the solutions and advantages of optical technologies down to the form-factor of typical electronic microchips, including applications in telecommunications, high-speed computing, sensing, and quantum computing. However, despite the existing technologies for semiconductor fabrication, PICs, unlike their electronic counterparts, are exceedingly difficult to package and test, with each part of the process individually taking up roughly 30% of the manufacturing cost. Thus, in recent years, much focus has been placed on reducing these costs through increased automation of the various testing processes, particularly the fiber alignment process, in which, for a given device, the input and output fibers are moved to the optimal position for maximum throughput. The following paper describes the construction and implementation of an automated PIC measurement system in the Silicon Photonics Lab at the University of Dayton, including implementations of automated fiber alignment routines. The system competes with state-of-the-art output metrics in terms of measurement throughput and includes components for both optical and electric device measurement

    Ethical & Effective Federal Artificial Intelligence Policy

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the defining achievement of our time, processing vast amounts of data, generating intelligent outcomes, and enhancing our efficiency. As such, AI has the potential for both great benefits and significant harms. First, I reviewed the five most significant and immediate problems posed by AI. After recognizing the problems, I conduct in-depth analysis on the current regulatory structures of the federal government. I examine seven different departments as well as certain state and international regulatory structures to determine what harms are already addressed, where the gaps exist, and where the new policy is necessary. Then, I briefly review proposed solutions to these problems, before finally laying out a comprehensive, 14 step federal AI policy. This policy aims to balance innovation and regulation and provide ethical guidelines for AI regulations that can be effectively implemented by the federal government. I also provide a list of potential future policies. Since AI is constantly evolving, this list could be referenced for important policy in the future, it simply lacks an apparent immediate necessity. While it is nearly impossible to predict with full accuracy the development of AI and create perfect policies to regulate it, this paper provides a fundamental analysis as to actions that can be taken to prevent AI from exacerbating significant problems over the foreseeable future

    The Correctional Responses to COVID-19: in Ohio, the U.S., and Across the Globe

    The United States has the largest correctional system in the world, and as a result, the system is vulnerable to various public health issues, the most recent being the COVID-19 pandemic. Correctional institutions across the country were unprepared for a pandemic of this scale, specific to supplies and regulations. As a result, tens of thousands of incarcerated individuals fell sick in outbreaks, and thousands more passed away due to complications. Regulations varied from institution to institution, and policies then and now are still unclear. To prepare for the future, understanding these policies is vital to better understand where successes and failures were, and this project aims to shed light on this topic. This study uses descriptive quantitative analysis of publicly available secondary data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ Impact of COVID-19 on State and Federal Prisons, March 2020–February 2021 report. The researcher manually extracted and organized relevant data points to create original tables comparing Ohio’s prison system to national trends across key indicators. This information will fill in current gaps in understanding and serve to help correctional institutions better understand how to protect their staff and incarcerated populations from future outbreaks and pandemics

    Electropolymerization on ITO-Coated Glass Slides of a Series of π-Extended BODIPY Dyes with Redox-Active Meso-Substituents

    A two-step method was used to synthesize a series of meso-carbazole and meso-pyrene boron dipyrromethene (BDP) dyes without requiring the use of catalysts or oxidizing agents. The HOMO and LUMO energies are dependent on the extent of π-conjugation associated with the pyrroles as indicated by solution spectroscopic and electrochemical studies. Solution electrochemistry of the dyes in chloroform reveal film formation onto glassy carbon electrodes. Electrolysis of chloroform solutions of the dyes using indium tin oxide as the working electrode show, using UV / vis spectroscopy, the formation of films. The BODIPY structure for two of the dyes remains intact upon electrolysis, showing sharp absorption peaks on the ITO slides similar to that observed for the same dyes in solution

    In early modern England (the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries), women’s natures and preferred conduct were frequently discussed in pamphlets, essays, ballads, and conduct manuals. This research project examines how early modern women are represented in William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado About Nothing and the implications of such characterizations. Early modern literature defines virtuous women as good housewives, obedient, patient, chaste, wise, and pious; they should avoid vanity and submit to men. Early modern depictions of the ideal woman were influenced by the virtues emphasized in Christianity and Classical history and mythology. Women were encouraged to model themselves after well-known female exemplars from Christian and Classical stories. The Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado About Nothing, both comedies written in the early modern period, feature female main characters who either conform with these social expectations or defy them. An analysis of these plays reveals how early modern conceptions of women’s conduct were reflected and reinforced on stage, as well as how the women who did not conform could be disciplined or punished. In particular, these plays justify domestic abuse as a response to disobedient wives and public humiliation as a response to unchaste women. Plays have the ability to influence their audience’s perception of the world. As The Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado About Nothing continue to be regularly performed today, it is important to understand and critique the lessons they teach contemporary audiences about women’s behavior

    Who Will Save the Water? Appealing to the Judiciary to Revisit Reasonable Use

    Michigan is known as the Great Lakes State: Daily life, the economy, recreation, agriculture, and more are influenced and even defined by the abundance of waterways all around. Lulled into complacency by the seeming excess of water, residents, business owners, politicians, and tourists all likely believe that the Great Lakes are inexhaustible. Elsewhere, extended droughts brought on by climate change deplete traditional sources of water, even while the demand for it grows, in industry, agriculture, and the municipal water supply for developing communities. This increased demand will threaten the viability and sustainability of the Great Lakes in the coming decades. Water resources in the region are further threatened by exploitation from profit-seeking business entities, able to capitalize on Great Lakes water as a nearly free resource because of a dearth of legal protections for the groundwater that feeds the lakes, a valuable resource itself. The judiciary should consider steps to protect and conserve Great Lakes water through an expanded and more progressive approach to determining the reasonable use of water. It is within the power of the Michigan judiciary to set forward-thinking precedent and to protect groundwater in the Great Lakes, thereby resulting in the sustainability of water resources for future generations
