    Influence of the loci of non-cavitated fissure caries on its detection with optical coherence tomography

    Objective: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in detecting naturally occurring non-cavitated fissure caries (NCFC) in totality and at different loci by visually assessing cross-sectional OCT scans (B-scan) with an interpretation criterion. The secondary objective was to evaluate the agreement between dimensions of NCFC measured with OCT and polarized light microscopy (PLM). Methods: 71 investigation sites of sound fissure and naturally occurring NCFC on human extracted premolars were identified and scanned with a swept-source OCT. The teeth were then sectioned bucco-lingually at the investigation sites and imaged using PLM. Two calibrated examiners trained on the B-scan NCFC visual interpretation criteria established for this study, assessed the investigation sites and results were validated against PLM. Results: Detection sensitivity of B-scan for NCFC when fissures were assessed in totality, or on the slopes or walls separately are 0.98, 0.95, 0.94 and specificity are 0.95, 0.90, and 0.95. One-way ANOVA showed that width measurements of wall loci done with OCT and PLM were not statistically different. However, OCT height measurements of slope loci were statistically bigger with a constant bias of 0.08 mm (of which is not clinically significant) and OCT height measurements of wall loci were statistically smaller (0.57 mm) and Bland-Altman plots indicated presence of proportionate bias. Conclusion: Visual assessment of B-scans with the interpretation criteria resulted in both high specificity and sensitivity and were not affected by loci location. OCT width measurement of wall loci is in agreement with PLM. Clinical significance: Unanimous high sensitivity in this and previous studies indicate that visual assessment of B-scans reliably rule out NCFC. Detection accuracy was not affected by loci location. Width of wall loci and/or height of slope loci in OCT B-scan are to be used for monitoring NCFC but not height of wall loci

    Modern industrial applications involve rigorous operating conditions due to which lubricant either slips out of the contact or its thin layer resides between the interacting surfaces. Deposition of diamond-like carbon coatings and using lubricants capable of physically adsorbing on the interacting surfaces can significantly improve tribological performance. In this study, tribological compatibility of glycerol mono-oleate, molybdenum dithiocarbamate and zinc dialkyldithiophosphate with palm trimethylolpropane ester and tetrahedral amorphous diamond-like carbon coating has been investigated using universal wear testing machine. For comparison, additive-free and formulated versions of polyalphaolefin were used. Moreover, spectroscopic techniques were used to investigate mechanisms responsible for a particular tribological behavior. Among base oils, trimethylolpropane ester proved to be more effective in enhancing friction performance and mitigating wear of contacts when one of the interacting surfaces was ferrous-based. Self-mated tetrahedral amorphous diamond-like carbon coating surfaces resulted in lowest values of friction and wear coefficient of balls

    Non-Synonymous Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Physical Activity Interactions on Adiposity Parameters in Malaysian Adolescents

    Background: Several non-synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) have been shown to be associated with obesity. Little is known about their associations and interactions with physical activity (PA) in relation to adiposity parameters among adolescents in Malaysia. Methods: We examined whether (a) PA and (b) selected nsSNPs are associated with adiposity parameters and whether PA interacts with these nsSNPs on these outcomes in adolescents from the Malaysian Health and Adolescents Longitudinal Research Team study (n = 1,151). Body mass indices, waist-hip ratio, and percentage body fat (% BF) were obtained. PA was assessed using Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C). Five nsSNPs were included: beta-3 adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) rs4994, FABP2 rs1799883, GHRL rs696217, MC3R rs3827103, and vitamin D receptor rs2228570, individually and as combined genetic risk score (GRS). Associations and interactions between nsSNPs and PAQ-C scores were examined using generalized linear model. Results: PAQ-C scores were associated with % BF (β = -0.44 [95% confidence interval -0.72, -0.16], p = 0.002). The CC genotype of ADRB3 rs4994 (β = -0.16 [-0.28, -0.05], corrected p = 0.01) and AA genotype of MC3R rs3827103 (β = -0.06 [-0.12, -0.00], p = 0.02) were significantly associated with % BF compared to TT and GG genotypes, respectively. Significant interactions with PA were found between ADRB3 rs4994 (β = -0.05 [-0.10, -0.01], p = 0.02) and combined GRS (β = -0.03 [-0.04, -0.01], p = 0.01) for % BF. Conclusion: Higher PA score was associated with reduced % BF in Malaysian adolescents. Of the nsSNPs, ADRB3 rs4994 and MC3R rs3827103 were associated with % BF. Significant interactions with PA were found for ADRB3 rs4994 and combined GRS on % BF but not on measurements of weight or circumferences. Targeting body fat represent prospects for molecular studies and lifestyle intervention in this population

    Effects of functionalized carbon nanofillers on the spectral selectivity behavior of aluminum nanocomposites for solar absorber applications

    The effects of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the spectral selectivity behavior of aluminum (Al) nanocomposites were investigated in this study. The attachment of the carboxylic (COOH) functional group on the surface of the carbon nanofillers was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The pristine and functionalized MWCNTs and GNPs were introduced into pure Al powder at different concentrations (5, 10, and 15 wt%) to produce Al–MWCNT–GNP and Al–MWCNTCOOH–GNPCOOH nanocomposites. The results show that the dispersion of the carbon nanofillers is better and the spectral selectivity ratios are higher for the Al–MWCNTCOOH–GNPCOOH nanocomposites compared with those for Al–MWCNT–GNP nanocomposites. In addition, the light absorption is significantly enhanced in the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared regions (200–2500 nm) whereas the reflectance is significantly enhanced in the near-infrared, mid-infrared, and far-infrared regions (3000–14 000 nm) for the Al–MWCNTCOOH–GNPCOOH nanocomposites. The highest spectral selectivity ratio (27.41) is attained for the Al nanocomposite with 2.5 wt% MWCNTCOOH and 2.5 wt% of GNPCOOH

    Glyceryl Ether (mono-tert-butoxypropanediol) in Emulsion System

    This paper reports the effects of glyceryl ether specifically mono-tert-butoxypropanediol on oil in water emulsion system. Based on 12 HLB value, screening for stable emulsions was carried out without the presence of glyceryl ether. A stable emulsion was used as a control. Then the effects of glyceryl ether on the emulsion system were investigated. The emulsions prepared were analyzed for stability, viscosity, pH value, particle size, in vitro dermal irritation potential, in vitro ocular irritation potential and also moisturizing property. The incorporation of glycerol in the emulsion system was also done for comparison. Emulsions with glyceryl ether showed lower viscosity values than emulsions with glycerol. Furthermore, the emulsions also exhibited moisturizing property compared to the control emulsion. Glyceryl ether is suitable to be used in cosmetic products which require reduced viscosity but retain its skin hydration property

    Advances of radiation sterilisation in tissue banking

    Under the auspices of the IAEA tissue banking programme on “Radiation Sterilisation of Tissue Graft” conducted from 1985 to 2004, many scientists and surgeons were involved in various regional research and development (R&D) projects mainly in dealing with radiation dose selection, radiation effects on human tissues and quality system in radiation sterilisation. New findings on radiation effects, tissue processing and preservation were shared during the regional and interregional meetings and workshops. Many tissue banks started to use radiation (25 kGy) to sterilize tissue grafts for tissue safety and efficacy and still continue to use it. The IAEA Code of Practice for Radiation Sterilization of Tissues Allografts developed in 2007 offered simpler methods to conduct radiation dose setting and dose validation experiments for tissue grafts. Advances in dose selection and dose mapping are continued under the quality management system when banks need to be certified to continue their operation. The combination of good tissue processing and preservation as well as good radiation practice will ensure the tissue products are properly sterilised thus safe and of high quality. Experience in meeting challenges in using radiation sterilisation and achievements reported by the tissue bankers are shared here

    Water-body segmentation in satellite imagery applying modified Kernel K-means

    The main purpose of k-Means clustering is partitioning patterns into various homogeneous clusters by minimizing cluster errors, but the modified solution of k-Means can be recovered with the guidance of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). In this paper, the linear Kernel PCA guides k-Means procedure using filter to modify images in situations where some parts are missing by k-Means classification. The proposed method consists of three steps: 1) transformation of the color space and using PCA to solve the eigenvalue problem pertaining to the covariance matrices of satellite image; 2) feature extraction from selected eigenvectors and are rearranged by applying the training map to extract the useful information as a set of new orthogonal variables called principal components; and 3) classification of the images based on the extracted features using k-Means clustering. The quantitative results obtained using the proposed method were compared with k-Means and k-Means PCA techniques in terms of accuracy in extraction. The contribution of this approach is the modification of PCA selection to achieve more accurate extraction of the water-body segmentation in satellite images

    Identification of selected monogeneans using image processing, artificial neural network and K-nearest neighbor

    Over the last two decades, improvements in developing computational tools have made significant contributions to the classification of images of biological specimens to their corresponding species. These days, identification of biological species is much easier for taxonomists and even non-taxonomists due to the development of automated computer techniques and systems. In this study, we developed a fully automated identification model for monogenean images based on the shape characters of the haptoral organs of eight species: Sinodiplectanotrema malayanum, Diplectanum jaculator, Trianchoratus pahangensis, Trianchoratus lonianchoratus, Trianchoratus malayensis, Metahaliotrema ypsilocleithru, Metahaliotrema mizellei and Metahaliotrema similis. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) method was used to reduce the dimension of extracted feature vectors which were then used in the classification with K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifiers for the identification of monogenean specimens of eight species. The need for the discovery of new characters for identification of species has been acknowledged for log by systematic parasitology. Using the overall form of anchors and bars for extraction of features led to acceptable results in automated classification of monogeneans. To date, this is the first fully automated identification model for monogeneans with an accuracy of 86.25% using KNN and 93.1% using ANN

    Habitat complexity affects benthic harmful dinoflagellate assemblages in the fringing reef of Rawa Island, Malaysia

    Few studies have investigated the effect of fine-scale habitat differences on the dynamics of benthic harmful dinoflagellate assemblages. To determine how these microhabitat differences affect the distribution and abundance of the major benthic harmful dinoflagellate genera in a tropical coral reef ecosystem, a field study was undertaken between April–September 2015 and January 2016 on the shallow reef flat of the fringing reef of Rawa Island, Terengganu, Malaysia. Sampling of benthic dinoflagellates was carried out using an artificial substrate sampling method (fiberglass screens). Benthic microhabitats surrounding the sampling screens were characterized simultaneously from photographs of a 0.25-m2 quadrat based on categories of bottom substrate types. Five taxonomic groups of benthic dinoflagellates, Ostreopsis, Gambierdiscus, Prorocentrum, Amphidinium, and Coolia were identified, and cells were enumerated using a light microscope. The results showed Gambierdiscus was less abundant than other genera throughout the study period, with maximum abundance of 1.2 × 103 cells 100 cm−2. While most taxa were present on reefs with high coral cover, higher cell abundances were observed in reefs with high turf algal cover and coral rubble, with the exception of Ostreopsis, where the abundance reached a maximum of 3.4 × 104 cells 100 cm−2 in habitats with high coral cover. Microhabitat heterogeneity was identified as a key factor governing the benthic harmful dinoflagellate assemblages and may account for much of the observed variability in dominant taxa. This finding has significant implications for the role of variability in the benthic harmful algal bloom (BHAB) outbreaks and the potential in identifying BHAB-related toxin transfer pathways and the key vectors in the food webs
