    Engineering ellipsoidal cap-like hydrogel particles as building blocks or sacrificial templates for three-dimensional cell culture

    Hydrogel particles that can be engineered to compartmentally culture cells in a three-dimensional (3D) and high-Throughput manner have attracted increasing interest in the biomedical area. However, the ability to generate hydrogel particles with specially designed structures and their potential biomedical applications need to be further explored. This work introduces a method for fabricating hydrogel particles in an ellipsoidal cap-like shape (i.e., ellipsoidal cap-like hydrogel particles) by employing an open-pore anodic aluminum oxide membrane. Hydrogel particles of different sizes are fabricated. The ability to produce ellipsoidal cap-like magnetic hydrogel particles with controlled distribution of magnetic nanoparticles is demonstrated. Encapsulated cells show high viability, indicating the potential for using these hydrogel particles as structure-and remote-controllable building blocks for tissue engineering application. Moreover, the hydrogel particles are also used as sacrificial templates for fabricating ellipsoidal cap-like concave wells, which are further applied for producing size controllable cell aggregates. The results are beneficial for the development of hydrogel particles and their applications in 3D cell culture

    Image pattern recognition in big data: taxonomy and open challenges: survey

    Image pattern recognition in the field of big data has gained increasing importance and attention from researchers and practitioners in many domains of science and technology. This paper focuses on the usage of image pattern recognition for big data applications. In this context, the taxonomy of image pattern recognition and big data is revealed. The applications of image pattern recognition for big data, including multimedia, biometrics, and biology/biomedical, are also highlighted. Moreover, the significance of using pattern-based feature reduction in big data is discussed, and machine-learning techniques in pattern recognition applications are presented. A comparison based on the objectives of the approaches is presented to underline the taxonomy. This paper provides a novel review in exploring image recognition approaches for big data, which can be used in future research

    Hepatitis C virus treatment as prevention in an extended network of people who inject drugs in the USA: a modelling study

    Background: Chronic infections with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV are highly prevalent in the USA and concentrated in people who inject drugs. Treatment as prevention with highly effective new direct-acting antivirals is a prospective HCV elimination strategy. We used network-based modelling to analyse the effect of this strategy in HCV-infected people who inject drugs in a US city. Methods: Five graph models were fit using data from 1574 people who inject drugs in Hartford, CT, USA. We used a degree-corrected stochastic block model, based on goodness-of-fit, to model networks of injection drug users. We simulated transmission of HCV and HIV through this network with varying levels of HCV treatment coverage (0%, 3%, 6%, 12%, or 24%) and varying baseline HCV prevalence in people who inject drugs (30%, 60%, 75%, or 85%). We compared the effectiveness of seven treatment-as-prevention strategies on reducing HCV prevalence over 10 years and 20 years versus no treatment. The strategies consisted of treatment assigned to either a randomly chosen individual who injects drugs or to an individual with the highest number of injection partners. Additional strategies explored the effects of treating either none, half, or all of the injection partners of the selected individual, as well as a strategy based on respondent-driven recruitment into treatment. Findings: Our model estimates show that at the highest baseline HCV prevalence in people who inject drugs (85%), expansion of treatment coverage does not substantially reduce HCV prevalence for any treatment-as-prevention strategy. However, when baseline HCV prevalence is 60% or lower, treating more than 120 (12%) individuals per 1000 people who inject drugs per year would probably eliminate HCV within 10 years. On average, assigning treatment randomly to individuals who inject drugs is better than targeting individuals with the most injection partners. Treatment-as-prevention strategies that treat additional network members are among the best performing strategies and can enhance less effective strategies that target the degree (ie, the highest number of injection partners) within the network. Interpretation: Successful HCV treatment as prevention should incorporate the baseline HCV prevalence and will achieve the greatest benefit when coverage is sufficiently expanded.     Elder Abuse and Chronic Pain: Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Results from the Preventing Elder Abuse and Neglect Initiative

    Objectives: To examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between elder abuse and neglect (EAN) and chronic pain in rural older Malaysians. Design: Two-year prospective cohort study. Setting: Kuala Pilah, a district in Negeri Sembilan approximately 100 km from the capital city, Kuala Lumpur. Participants: Community-dwelling older adults aged 60 and older. Using a multistage cluster sampling strategy, 1,927 respondents were recruited and assessed at baseline, of whom 1,189 were re-assessed 2 years later. Measures: EAN was determined using the modified Conflict Tactic Scale, and chronic pain was assessed through self-report using validated questions. Results: The prevalence of chronic pain was 20.4%. Cross-sectional results revealed 8 variables significantly associated with chronic pain—age, education, income, comorbidities, self-rated health, depression, gait speed, and EAN. Abused elderly adults were 1.52 times as likely to have chronic pain (odds ratio=1.52, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.03–2.27), although longitudinal analyses showed no relationship between EAN and risk of chronic pain (risk ratio=1.14, 95% CI=0.81–1.60). This lack of causal link was consistent when comparing analysis with complete cases with that of imputed data. Conclusion: Our findings indicate no temporal relationship between EAN and chronic pain but indicated cross-sectional associations between the two. This might indicate that, although EAN does not lead to chronic pain, individuals with greater physical limitations are more vulnerable to abuse. Our study also shows the importance of cohort design in determining causal relationships between EAN and potentially linked health outcomes

    Polyaniline-dicationic ionic liquid coated with magnetic nanoparticles composite for magnetic solid phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in environmental samples

    In this present study, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) nanocomposites modified with polyaniline (PANI) coated newly synthesised dicationic ionic liquid (DICAT) forming MNP-PANI-DICAT were successfully synthesised as new generation material for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE). MNP-PANI-DICAT was characterised by FT-IR NMR, CHN, BET, SEM, TEM, and VSM techniques and the results were compared with MNP-PANI and native MNP. This new material was applied as a magnetic adsorbent for the pre-concentration and separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to the π–π interaction between polyaniline shell and dicationic ionic liquid (DICAT) with PAHs compounds. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed method was evaluated and applied for the analysis of PAHs in environmental samples using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The validation method showed good linearity (0.005–500 µg L−1) with the coefficient of determination (R2) > 0.999. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of the developed method (MNP-PANI-DICAT-MSPE) were in the range of 0.0008–0.2086 µg L−1 and 0.0024–0.6320 µg L−1, respectively. The enrichment factor (EF) of PAHs on MNP-PANI-DICAT-MSPE were in the range of 7.546–29.632. The extraction recoveries of natural water, sludge, and soil samples were ranged from 80.2% to 111.9% with relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 5.6%. The newly synthesised MNP-PANI-DICAT possess good sensitivity, reusability, and fast extraction of PAHs under the MSPE procedure in various environmental samples

    Museum Institutions in the Digital Age: The Insights of Malaysian Museums’ Use of Facebook

    Media, entertainment, and other forms of popular culture play a significant role in shaping our perceptions of others. For many of us, popular culture is the primary way we learn about people who are different from us. The problem, though, is that many representations are based on cultural stereotypes, which tend to marginalize and caricature members of non-dominant groups. Through these representations, we see a limited, and distorted, view of others. Both entertainment and news media are powerful forces in creating and perpetuating negative cultural stereotypes, especially about racial and ethnic groups. In television and film, characters from non-dominant racial and ethnic groups often fall into formulaic tropes, and their storylines easily follow cliché narratives. The consistency of these representations reinforces stereotypes and makes them more readily available in our minds. Over the last decade, museums have experienced a strong cultural shift from object-oriented towards audience-oriented strategic approaches. The new approaches need to be addressed due to social change and the advent of communication technology as a result of the establishment of new forms of community. This research paper examines the relevant literature on this transformation and presents supportive evidence of the impact that social media have upon the relationship between museum institutions and their audiences. The Department of Museums Malaysia's Facebook page provides a comprehensive evaluation of the museum's general social media strategy. Given the widespread and dominance use of Facebook and other social media, the degree of engagement of museum institutions and social media seem to have become an inseparable factor on the scale of effectiveness of the relation with museum audiences and the levels of visitor attendance. The purpose of this research aims to provide an initial comprehensive set of insights into the use of social media by museum institutions by using one of the most prestigious museums in Malaysia as a case study

    Oil palm shell as an agricultural solid waste in artificial lightweight aggregate concrete

    The aim of this study was to produce a sustainable construction material by incorporating an agricultural solid waste, namely oil palm shell (OPS), in an artificial lightweight aggregate concrete. For this purpose, in a structural lightweight aggregate concrete made of expanded clay, the lightweight aggregate was substituted with OPS in 0, 25 and 50% by volume. Properties such as compressive strength under different curing conditions, as well as density, splitting tensile and flexural strengths, modulus of elasticity and drying shrinkage of expanded clay–OPS concretes were measured and discussed. The test results showed that partial substitution of expanded clay by OPS increased the density, compressive strength, specific strength (compressive strength to weight ratio), as well as splitting tensile and flexural strengths of lightweight concrete. However, it was observed that the modulus of elasticity decreased by about 4 and 13% in the 25 and 50% substitution levels, respectively. The expanded clay–OPS concretes showed greater drying shrinkage strain compared to expanded clay lightweight concrete. In addition, it was found that the sensitivity of compressive strength of concretes containing OPS to the lack of curing is due to high drying shrinkage and consequently micro-cracks formation in the interfacial transaction zone of the concretes

    A Rasch analysis of the community’s preference for different attributes of Islamic banks in Indonesia

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the degree to which the different attributes of Islamic banks in Indonesia are preferred by the community. Design/methodology/approach: This paper uses a quantitative approach by applying Rasch analysis to measure the relative importance of 18 attributes of Islamic banks to the community. The data were collected by questionnaires, which were distributed online and completed by 345 respondents. In addition to the Rasch model, the preference of attributes was measured by a statistical inference test, using “SPSS” software, which employs binary logic regression related to the agreement between the performance of attributes and expectations. Findings: The instrument used in this study showed good reliability, and its validity fits the expected model. The results show that the assurance of financial security, friendliness and the application of Islamic principles in their operations are the most important attributes to be considered when people choose an Islamic bank. The degree of importance placed by the community on the various attributes of Islamic banks will have an effect upon the actual and perceived quality of those attributes. An increase in the community’s preference for a particular attribute will eventually be followed by an increased agreement between the actual performance of that attribute and the community’s expectation. Research limitations/implications: The varied profiles of individual respondents were not explored fully: this research relies solely on quantitative analysis. So, there is no empirical information to inform the Islamic banks as to which segments of the community should be the focus of their promotional activities. Originality/value: The use of Rasch analysis to measure the community’s preference for various attributes of Islamic banks has not been done previously

    Psychometric Properties of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Form Y) among Malaysian University Students

    Health Ministry statistics showed mental health problems among Malaysian students increased from one in ten individuals in year 2011 to one in five in 2016. Anxiety and depression were cited as the main causes of mental health problems among students in Malaysia. However, an anxiety measure that has been validated for use with Malaysian students is still lacking. Thus, the main objective of the current study is to examine the psychometric proprieties of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Form Y) (STAI), and to assess the suitability of the factorial model in the context of Malaysia. The STAI contains separate scales for measuring state and trait anxiety. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted to test and to compare the two-factor model (State Anxiety and Trait Anxiety) and the four-factor model (State Anxiety Present, State Anxiety Absent, Trait Anxiety Present, and Trait Anxiety Absent) of STAI. In addition, the reliability and validity of the model were also tested. The sample consisted of 341 university students from one of the universities in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The results supported a better fit to the data for the four-factor model of STAI. To improve composite reliability and the average variance extracted (AVE) of the constructs, one item was removed from each of the State Anxiety Present factor, Trait Anxiety present factor, and Trait Anxiety Absent factor. Convergent validity for the four-factor model was also improved by the removal of the three items. The findings also suggested that the STAI may have some discriminant validity issues. In the framework of psychology of sustainability and sustainable development, research and intervention regarding this topic should also be enhanced from a primary prevention perspective to improve the quality of life of every human being, fostering wellbeing at all different levels, from individuals to organizations

    Genomic analyses of five Roseivirga species: Insights into marine adaptation

    To date, the genus Roseivirga consists of six species with one subspecies and is one of the least-studied genera among the family Flammeovirgaceae. In order to further explore this genus, the genome sequences of five Roseivirga spp. were compared and described in this study. The Roseivirga genomes have similar sizes in the range of 4.08–4.47 Mb with an average of 4.22 Mb. Several key proteins related to osmotic stress adaptation were identified in Roseivirga spp. including betaine transporter, choline dehydrogenase, and glutamate synthases. Significant amount of proteins associated with amino acid transport and metabolism were also present in Roseivirga genome. All five Roseivirga spp. were able to grow in medium contained casamino acids (mixture of amino acids) as sole carbon or nitrogen sources. Taken together, these findings suggested the potential role of Roseivirga in decomposing organic nitrogen matter in marine environment
