Socioemotional wealth and performance in private family firms
Purpose: Although family business literature acknowledges that family firms owners are motivated by a set of socioemotional wealth (SEW) goals along with firm-centric business goals, yet a consistently predictable pattern of relationship between SEW and financial wealth is yet to be discerned. The purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical model based on the stakeholder approach to suggest that family commitment mediates the association between the dimensions of SEW and firm performance. Design/methodology/approach: A set of hypotheses are proposed that are tested using structural equation modeling with data collected from 357 medium to large sized privately held family firms in Bangladesh. The data analysis is done with SmartPLS (v.3.2). Findings: The results indicate that family commitment partially mediates the relationships between family control and influence, family identification, emotional attachment and renewal of family bonds through dynastic succession and firm performance. The only non-significant relationship was between binding social ties and firm performance. The results provide a more nuanced understanding of the link between SEW goals and firm performance, and present important implications for theory and practice. Research limitations/implications: The cross-sectional nature of the study exposes it to the specter of common method bias despite the fact that procedural remedies were initiated to minimize the impact of such occurrence. A longitudinal study with data obtained from multiple individuals at different levels of the organization would possibly yield more robust findings. Furthermore, in the absence of a multi-country and multi-sector analysis, a broad generalization of the findings may not be feasible. Practical implications: The knowledge that family identity, emotional attachment and renewal of family bonds through dynastic succession may be leveraged to enhance the commitment of subsequent generation of family firm owners to the firm that may be pertinent to incumbents who desire to see their successors more engaged in the family enterprise. Furthermore, knowing that excessive focus on family control over the firm leads to negative outcomes is also pertinent to family firm leaders. Social implications: Survival of family businesses is vital to the global economy as one of the primary drivers of global GDP growth and source of new employment. Policy makers can benefit from the findings of this study to customize policies that take into cognizance the importance of SEW owners of family firms and the fact that some of these SEW goals actually benefit the firm in terms of enhanced commitment to the enterprise and consequently superior firm performance. Originality/value: The role of family commitment as a mediator between SEW and firm performance has not been dominant in the literature. By providing a finer-grained understanding of how family commitment accounts for the relationship between family-centric non-economic goals such as SEW and firm-centric goals such as business performance, the study presents a theoretical link between sociomemotional wealth and financial wealth in the context of private family firms. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited
Influence of prayers coping in problematic behaviors
Symptoms of social problems among adolescents nowadays are increasingly worsening and worrying all parties concerned. This is due to the lack of religious and spiritual appreciation among society. This phenomenon, if not contained, will have a negative impact on the well-being of the community, the family institution and the teenager’s character . The objective of this study is to examine the Islamic spiritual approach based on mystical concepts developed by tasawuf scholars. This study also aimed to identify the forms of personality disorders in adolescents living in Baitul Sakinah and the Silent Repetition of Prayers and Self-reflection or Introspection treatment used to overcome the problem at the centre. In addition, the study also aimed to analyze the implications of the Silent Repetition of Prayers, Self-reflection or Introspection approaches used on the trainees in Baitul Sakinah. This was a qualitative study that applied the case study design comprising interviews as well as several other methods such as document analysis and questionnaires. The instruments used were interview protocol and questionnaire. Data from interviews were analyzed using the manual and Nvivo 11 software. The manual method covered the process of transcription, reduction, coding and data display. Whereas the data from the questionnaire were analyzed descriptively using SPSS 23.0. The results showed that there were 22 types of problematic behaviors exhibited by trainees in Baitul Sakinah. This negative phenomenon requires a solution. The findings also indicated that there are several spiritual treatment approaches used in Baitul Sakinah, such Silent Repetition of Prayers and Self-reflection or Introspection. The implication is that the treatment creates awareness among the trainees and convinces them to abstain from negative elements that cause their problematic behavior. © IAEME Publication
Optimal solar powered system for long houses in sarawak by using homer tool
Ensuring electricity coverage for rural areas in Malaysia is still a big challenge due to the houses are in deep forest and scattered locations. The estimated coverage in 2015 is only 94% and still depending on conventional fossil-fuel generators. Considering full utilization of renewable source is highly recommended. Therefore, this paper proposes optimal design of full solar powered system for long houses in one selected area in Sarawak, Malaysia. Interestingly, the work has been started with evaluation and estimation of loads with site survey done to the selected area, which is Kampung Sungai Merah. The site visit has been conducted to survey and estimate the loads at the site. The design considers meteorological and climate data, specifications of system, and simulation configuration. HOMER tool is used in this work which comes with the optimization algorithm to search for the least cost system. The simulation results reveal the outcomes by considering three discount rates of 3%, 6% and 12%, and the system is presented with the best design for each rate. Lower discount rate contributes to higher PV and lower battery architectures as compared to higher discount rates. In short, it can be concluded that the system is optimally designed to be fully depended on utilization of solar as solid renewable source, which affects PV and battery architectures as two key design elements. Finally, this work should be able to provide the designer an opportunity to fully consider various options in developing the best renewable and full solar powered system for rural electrification. © 2019 ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network. Evaluation of photocatalytic activity of copper ferrite nanoparticles
The research expresses a simple green genesis approach to synthesize copper ferrite (Cu2Fe2O4) nanoparticles using copper sulphate (CuSO4) along with ferrous sulphate (FeSO4). The investigation has been made to do photocatalytic decolourization of Methylene Blue dye under UV light utilizing copper ferrite. The photocatalyst was prepared from fruit peel waste such as Pomegranate, Apple, Grapes, Orange and Banana (PAGOB). The characterization of nanoparticles was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The photodegradation rate of the dye was examined spectrophotometrically. The reaction was observed for pH, dye concentration, a dose of photocatalyst and intensity of light on the rate of photocatalytic to know the effect. Finally, the result was that the photodegradation has touched 88% under ideal conditions. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd
Proteomic analysis of flavokawain C-induced cell death in HCT 116 colon carcinoma cell line
Flavokawain C (FKC), a naturally occurring chalcone, has previously been shown to inhibit the growth of colon carcinoma HCT 116 cells through induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. However, the possible underlying mechanisms of cell death as a response to FKC treatment remains unclear. In this study, we performed proteomic analysis of HCT 116 cells treated with FKC to identify proteins that change in abundance. This was followed by bioinformatic analysis to predict possible associated molecular targets or pathways involved in the observed effects of FKC. A total of 35 proteins that changed in abundance (17 increased and 18 decreased) were identified through two-dimensional gel electrophoresis followed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS). Using the Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA), these proteins were predicted to be involved in cell death and survival, cell cycle, cellular growth and proliferation, protein synthesis, post-translational modification and amino acid metabolism by. Further analysis of the transcript levels of selected proteins using qPCR showed that some of the genes exhibited similar change of profile to that of the proteins'. Our results have provided novel insights into the potential molecular mechanisms underlying FKC-induced apoptosis or cell death in colon cancer cells. © 201
Electrolyte selection for supercapacitive devices: a critical review
Electrolytes are one of the vital constituents of electrochemical energy storage devices and their physical and chemical properties play an important role in these devices' performance, including capacity, power density, rate performance, cyclability and safety. This article reviews the current state of understanding of the electrode-electrolyte interaction in supercapacitors and battery-supercapacitor hybrid devices. The article discusses factors that affect the overall performance of the devices such as the ionic conductivity, mobility, diffusion coefficient, radius of bare and hydrated spheres, ion solvation, viscosity, dielectric constant, electrochemical stability, thermal stability and dispersion interaction. The requirements needed to design better electrolytes and the challenges that still need to be addressed for building better supercapacitive devices for the competitive energy storage market have also been highlighted. © 2019 The Royal Society of Chemistry
Jung Chang's wild swans: Love as a political concept
This article explores the different forms of love which appear in a work which is part family memoir, part autobiography, and part literary fiction: Jung Chang’s Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China (1991). This exploration is underpinned by theories of love articulated first by Karl Marx and Alexandra Kollontai and later by Erich Fromm and Michael Hardt. In different ways these thinkers all point to the idea that love is not merely a private matter between two individuals but rather a social and political phenomenon. Fromm’s insistence that love changes according to historical and cultural circumstances is shown to be relevant throughout as Chang portrays love adapting to the vast political changes taking place in China from approximately 1924 (when her grandmother became a concubine) until 1976 (the death of Mao). Corresponding to a large extent to the life histories of the “three daughters of China” ─ Chang’s grandmother, Chang’s mother, and Chang herself ─ the article traces a distinctive movement through property love and family love to “winged Eros”-based love, “red love” and finally love as a decision. © 2019, University of Malaya. Growth of plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition and hot filament plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition transfer-free graphene using a nickel catalyst
This paper investigates the effects of radiant heat from implementing a hot filament (HF) in an existing Plasma-enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD) system on the growth of transfer-free graphene. The fabrication and properties of the transfer-free graphene grown using the HF-PECVD technique with nickel (Ni) as a catalyst were compared to that of transfer-free graphene grown using the existing PECVD method. The Ni film was used as a catalyst to assist the formation of graphene at the Ni-substrate interface for both techniques. Instead of undergoing an additional Ni annealing process, an increase in deposition temperature was achieved from the radiant heat of the hot filament in the HF-PECVD, changing the Ni grain size from nano-sized to micro-sized and reducing the formation of Ni grain boundaries. The increase in Ni grain size and the reduction in the grain boundary formation promoted the formation of less defective graphene with a more ordered structure. The formation of well-ordered graphitic-structured graphene also corresponded to the disappearance of O contamination in the Ni catalyst due to the higher deposition temperature. The enhancement in the structure, morphology, and chemical bonding of the transfer-free graphene grown using the HF-PECVD technique resulted in improved electrical properties of the film. © 2019 Elsevier B.V
Study on modified curve fitting model in analyzing YIG resonator antenna
In this study, a modified curve fitting model (CFM) for cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) exclusively using YIG resonator with excess Fe2O3 is proposed. The modified CFM is used to accelerate the analysis of YIG resonator antenna (YRA) without having to repeat the characterization process for similar resonator. Modification of CFM is done using least square method in which correlation and regression analyses are used. The modified equations of resonant frequency and Q-factor are adapted for the YRA design using YIG resonator with excess Fe2O3 of 9%. Comparison between the simulation, measurement, and modified CFM results are very well matched. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
Aplikasi Teknik Fuzzy Delphi Terhadap Keperluan Elemen Teknologi Sebagai Wadah dalam Pembelajaran Berasaskan Pemikiran Reka Bentuk
As technology becomes ubiquitous in society, there is increasing momentum to incorporate it into education. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out the elements needed in integrating technology as a tool for design thinking-based learning. This study is a quantitative study with Fuzzy Delphi method. The data was gathered using questionnaire. Verification is done by 18 experts in the field of education, educational technology and design thinking. The study found that expert consensus on all element is more than 75% with threshold value (d) ≤ 0.2. This suggests that these eight elements are needed in integrating technology as a tool for design thinking-based learning. © Penerbit Universiti Sains Malaysia, 2019
