Meeting the Training Needs of Des Moines-Area Adult ESL Teachers

    Get PDF
The population of immigrants and refugees in Des Moines, Iowa, has grown rapidly in recent years, leading to an increased demand for adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. As ESL programs turn more and more to volunteer instructors to meet the demand, it is important that teachers, both volunteer and professional, are prepared and equipped to deliver quality instruction. This study seeks to better understand the training and professional development needs of Des Moines-area ESL instructors in order to make recommendations for adult ESL programs. Data was collected through surveys of 32 ESL instructors from a variety of professional and educational backgrounds, teaching contexts, and organizations. Additional data was gathered in the form of follow-up interviews with seven participants. Participants’ self-described training needs range from ESL-specific topics like teaching pronunciation to classroom management challenges such as incorporating technology. Many look for training and resources on their own and sometimes have a difficult time finding activities and materials that are appropriate for their classroom settings. Because participants’ training needs are specific to the individual instructor, this capstone recommends that adult ESL programs seek understand the needs of their instructors individually and offer multiple opportunities for teacher development. Opportunities should follow Knowles’s principles of andragogy and include reflective practice options which reflect Kolb’s cycle of learning. With a wide array of available training options, instructors can create a teacher development plan that best fits their needs and the needs of their students

Like Mother, Like Daughter: The Intergenerational Link Between Mother Activists and their Daughters in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

The concept of motherhood is often paired with notions of nurturing and caretaking, but it is rarely seen in the context of activism or social and political change. Thus, by researching the relationship between mother activists and their daughters, this paper delves into the concepts of how motherhood is perceived through a feminist lens, and what it means to be a mother while also performing duties as an activist. The research tackles the questions of whether daughters of mother activists become activists themselves, and how they were affected by their mother’s activism during adolescence, if at all. A narrative approach was used for data collection: one-on-one qualitative interviews with seven women were used to collect this data. The interviews were with mothers who were activists themselves, as well as adult daughters of mother activists. Amongst the sample of seven women, there were two mother-daughter pairs. The interviews yielded fascinating responses, such as the fact that daughters of mothers often did not feel neglected, and instead felt rather apathetic towards their mothers’ activism as children. As they got older, however, the research yielded that they started to understand and respect their mother’s work more. Also, the research showed that all daughters of mother activists became activists themselves, proving a strong intergenerational link regarding political ideologies and outlooks regarding activism. This study took place in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, a country that was specific to research due to the legacy of Apartheid and mothers in activism

Radical Moves: Negotiating Community and Transformation with (some of) SIT/South Africa’s Students of Color

    Get PDF
Finding its foundations in inquiries of community, knowledge(s), relational truths, and radical transformation, this project wonders specifically how students of color from the School of International Training (SIT)/South Africa: Multiculturalism and Human Rights Spring 2019 semester abroad in Cape Town experience, negotiate with, and envision the potential futures of community/ies in and around the program. My research operates within a socioprogrammatic context which is highly racialized, seeking to listen to, document, and place in conversation the perspectives of our students of color. My meditations ground themselves in the individual and collective narrative(s) of our students of color, explored primarily in a one–on–one interview and affinity focus group meeting. Themes and questions from these narratives (and their interconnections) are materialized in a multi–medium zine (informal magazine), alongside this report which additionally examines my own research processes in a practice of self–reflexivity. I intend to situate this research within critical inquiries about the future(s) of racialized community/ies in this program, in the lives of project contributors and myself, and in worlds at large

The adherence to safe sleep recommendations by nurses in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) of public and private hospitals in Grand Buenos Aires

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the “cause assigned to infant deaths that cannot be explained after a thorough case investigation, including a scene investigation, autopsy, and review of the clinical history” (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2016, p. 2). The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recommendations about safe sleep practices that can decrease the risk of SIDS and other Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID). The goal of this investigation is to analyze the adherence to these recommendation by the nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) of four hospitals, two public and two private, within the area of Grand Buenos Aires for babies ready to be discharged—specifically the nurse’s knowledge, practice, and teaching to parents concerning safe sleep. The strategy followed a qualitative and quantitative approach and with a descriptive scope. The methods include 47 surveys completed by nurses, 9 interviews with parents of babies ready for discharge, 13 observations of cribs of babies ready for discharge, and other observations in the NICUs related to safe sleep. These were all conducted with informed consent, anonymously, and with confidentiality. The results were analyzed in comparison with the theoretical framework. This paper is structured in the following manner: introduction, methodology, development, and conclusions. The development includes the theoretical framework and the results and analysis of the surveys, interviews, and observations. This investigation found that while the nurses were mostly able to identify the correct sleep recommendations, large percentages of them had incorrect beliefs about certain aspects of safe infant sleep. Nurses were willing to prioritize other factors of care during the pre-discharge period over safe sleep recommendations, especially for infant comfort and practices included in therapeutic positioning such as containment nests. Nurse instruction to parents about safe sleep was primarily verbal and included the recommendation of the supine position with the most frequency. Parents whose children were almost ready for discharge had a wide range of knowledge about the AAP recommendations. What they had learned in the NICU so far was from the nurses and from overhearing the discharge conversations of other parents with the doctor. Much of the information about safe sleep is saved until this moment of discharge

    Get PDF
The high Andes of Ecuador are home to a diverse community of mammals, many of which are threatened. These include the Andean bear, Andean fox, puma, and mountain tapir. This study used camera traps, direct observation, and indirect observation over three weeks to monitor the wildlife in the mountains of the Parroquia of Angochagua. The five species observed during this period were Andean bear, Andean fox, dog, mountain paca, and mouse. While this short study did not completely survey the mammalian community of the area, it confirmed the presence, diet, sociality, temporal habits, elevational range, and habitat preferences of the species detected, as well as documenting interactions between livestock, Andean bear, and free-roaming dogs. These data will contribute to ongoing conservation efforts by Big Mammals Conservation and the Parroquia of Angochagua to protect their high forest and páramo areas.

Lepidopteran diversity and abundance across five different indigenously managed land use zones in the Naso-Teribe Territory, Bocas del Toro Province, Panama

    Get PDF
Lepidopterans, the order that includes both moths and butterflies, are among the best-known insects taxonomically and ecologically due to the relative ease of monitoring them in comparison to other groups of insects. Their distribution follows that of other insects and forms of life, as around 90% of species have a tropical distribution. This incredibly speciose group of animals fills many vital roles in the ecosystems they inhabit, including herbivores in their larval stages, prey for a variety of predators in all life stages, and pollinators for many plant species as adults. In some circumstances, certain species may also serve as accurate indicators, which can be used to predict the biodiversity of other groups of animals and assess the health of ecosystems. As a result of all these important features, the conservation of Lepidopterans in the age of the Anthropocene is of high priority. Within conservation biology, an ideological debate on the ideal way to maximize both biodiversity conservation and agricultural production has arisen. Currently it appears that in the tropical regions of the world, the ‘land sharing’ approach which encourages the enhancement of habitat across the landscape, including in agricultural zones, is superior to the ‘land sparing’ approach that emphasizes the importance of protected areas. In this study, the effect of indigenous land-management in 5 different land-use zones on Lepidopteran communities in the Naso-Teribe Territory of Panama is investigated. The hypothesis was that areas such as pastures and agroecological crop fields will be able to support similar levels of biodiversity as primary forests. While the forest was found to be the most biodiverse area with high levels of endemism, the pasture and agroecological zones were also found to harbor high levels of species richness and important populations of Lepidopterans.

Gambaru-ando: Las Familias de los Desaparecidos de la Colectividad Japonesa (FDCJ) y su lucha por la memoria, verdad, justicia, y visibilidad / Embodying gambaru: Nikkei Families of the Desaparecidos and their Fight for Visibility in the Movement for Memory, Truth, and Justice

Queer Spaces, Future Places: Conversations with 3 Black Capetonian Femmes on Embodying Liberation

    Get PDF
Black femme bodies face multi-axial oppressive forces resting on their racialization, gendering, sexuality and possible other factors like socioeconomic status and ability. I interviewed 3 queer-identified Black femmes between the ages of 18 and 35 that are based in or work out of the Cape Town area. Femmes is defined as trans womxn, nonbinary femmes, femme lesbians and femme bisexuals, effeminate mxn, or any other femme-identified queer person. The purpose of this project is to investigate the possibility of a liberated Black queer future as an embodied practice within the context of the Black Capetonian queer community. Participants were selected through a ‘snowballing’ method of sampling. The method I selected was one-on-one semi-structured interviews with 3 participants. The 3 participants described a synthesis of compassion and conversation coupled with drastic changes in how gender roles are normalized as methods for achieving a liberated Black queer future. Their embodied practices for achieving this liberation range from merely educating the individuals around them about queerness to curating healing-oriented spoken word spaces for queer subjects. Additional areas of research would include redoing this study with a more diverse population or, more generally, further investigation into Black queer futurity in Cape Town

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to compare and examine which factors impact usage and perceptions of traditional medicine in Ushongo Mtoni and Kizanda villages. More specifically, this study aimed to gain an understanding of the usages, with a specific focus on gendered usages of medicinal plants in Kizanda village and Ushongo Mtoni village and to try to examine the differences in perceptions towards traditional medicine usage in Kizanda and Ushongo. Additionally, this study aimed to determine if there are any major themes that are constant with medicinal plants in both Ushongo and Kizanda. In order to conduct this study both participatory observations as well as interviews with traditional healers as well as the general population of the town were done. This study was conducted in Kizanda village in Lushoto district and Ushongo Mtoni village in Pangani district from the dates of 10/8/19-10/25/19. This study was done by using a snowball/convenience sampling method to conduct interviews in both villages. This study also included observatory practical in each area with a traditional healer. This study determined that traditional medicine is prevalent in both Ushongo Mtoni and Kizanda village. It is used very practically and for a number of ailments in each location. However, the depth of knowledge of traditional medicine is much deeper in Kizanda. In general, there are very positive perceptions towards traditional medicine in both areas. However, people in Ushongo use hospital medicine more often than people in Kizanda. The gendered usage of plants are fairly reflective of the greater gender dynamics of Tanzania in both areas. Finally, this study determined that the depth of knowledge of traditional medicine increases the conservation of medicinal plants. This study recommends that future literature explore how knowledge of traditional medicine increases conservation of traditional plants due to results which suggest this finding has significant impacts on conservation potential through traditional medicine
