Discontinuity Between Religion, Law, and Society through Animal Treatment in Morocco

    Get PDF
Animal treatment is a topic which is covered by many facets of what helps create the guiding principles for humans, yet all in different ways; there is some overlap, and there is some distinction. From my three months of study in Rabat, Morocco, seeing how each person approaches the homeless animal differently, I write on how three important overarching areas: religious, legal, and societal, discuss how animals should be treated. In this paper, I will be analyzing religious texts, legal writings both in place and in draft, and will rely on external works written animal markets and on the school curriculum to help better analyze how the society functions. My writing also includes interviews with citizens or experts to better establish main ideas and to make connections between the areas

RESTORING NATIVE LIMU: UTILIZING HAWAIIAN INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE AND PUBLISHED LITERATURE FOR RESTORATION IN KANEʻOHE BAY, OʻAHU, HAWAIʻI

    No full text
Hawaiʻi is the most isolated island chain in the world, which has an abundance of flora and fauna in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Due to its novelty, many of Hawaii’s ecosystems are sensitive to environmental change and species endemic to the islands are especially vulnerable to introduced species. In Kaneʻohe Bay, located on the east coast of Oʻahu, botanists introduced Kappaphycus alvarezii and K. striatum for cultivation in the 1970’s, and since then more invasive seaweeds have been introduced and spread throughout the bay. These introduced seaweeds smother corals and outcompeted native seaweed (locally called limu), dominating many coastal ecosystems. During the study, water quality data was collected, and a literature analysis was performed in order to provide potential best practices to restore native limu to Kaneʻohe Bay. Informal interviews with native community members were also conducted to gather cultural knowledge and methods. Results showed that the native Gracilaria parvispora will likely be able to be cultivated at most of the sites where data was gathered and that the water quality parameters in the bay fall within the ranges of successful limu literature growth obtained from the literature. Ocean broadcasting and floating cage methods seem likely to be the most successful for restoring native limu. Restoring native limu in Kaneʻohe Bay is important for mitigating some climate change impacts by providing native marine life with preferred food and habitat, reducing local effects of ocean acidification and anoxia, and storing carbon. Further research is needed to determine nutrient requirements for native limu and which species to plant in other areas of the bay and elsewhere in Oʻahu

Identity in Translation: International Students’ Perspectives on Language and Identity

    No full text
International students and second language speakers in the United States encounter a wide range of sentiments about themselves, about others, and about the world, deriving from their interactions and experiences while speaking English. This qualitative research study explores those feelings and experiences with the following questions: How do international students, who started at a community college in the United States, experience identity development and self-perception in regard to speaking a foreign language? Furthermore, have international students experienced any reflective tools or spaces that they feel helped them or influenced their identity development? Multiple, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 current, or recent, international students at a community college in the United States. The data from the interviews fell into four themes: terms and identification, identity and personality, culture, and finally, reflection and goals. Within these themes, participant perspectives revealed how personal, unique, and varied the second language experience is for international students and how this influences identity and self-perception. This research contributes more voices and perspectives to the growing field of identity and language research. The data presented in this capstone can deepen the understanding of the international student experience for those working in the educational field. It is essential that international educational practitioners be cognizant of these perspectives to avoid generalizations and to better understand the experience of each individual international student. Furthermore, this research demonstrates how institutions must provide the tools and support for international students to explore their feelings and reflect on their experiences living in another country and speaking another language

Interacting with the Other: Culturally Responsive Approaches Toward Intercultural Competence

    Get PDF
Traditional language teaching approaches assume a strong focus on linguistic proficiency, syntax, and grammar. This thesis makes the case that culture and language must be given equal consideration in a language curriculum, and educators must approach their work with a critical eye for the cultural identities of each of their students. The author examines the ways that learner identity, most notably as it pertains to race and sexual orientation, is a crucial element to consider as teachers build in areas of representation to mirror their learners. The author lays out the theoretical foundation of culturally responsive teaching and points out where they intersect with the tenets of intercultural competence, applying this framework to a world language unit. This paper underlines how educators can prepare students for successful intercultural encounters by developing their awareness of their own cultural perspective. The paper concludes by sharing teacher experiences of cultural conflict in the classroom, collected in survey responses, and explores how intercultural skills could help people to navigate conflict. Ultimately, the author reveals where and how a widened emphasis on interculturality should be applied to teacher development at every level

Supporting Latinx College Students Study Abroad

    Get PDF
Low participation of Latinx students in study abroad is something U.S. educators should be aware of and start to address. As the Latinx student population grows in higher education, growth of this population in study abroad should follow. The purpose of this research is to compile best practices and supports that can be implemented by international education professionals to support Latinx students who study abroad at their institutions. The research will answer the following research questions: how can international educators support Latinx students to study abroad? How can the current supports in place for Latinx students (in higher education) be leveraged to help them study abroad? Using surveys and interviews with international educators who work in study abroad and Latinx students who have studied abroad this study analyzed their opinions on best practices. Relevant barriers revealed included a lack of finances, lack of parental support and students not fitting in. The supports discovered for Latinx students comprise of financial support, parental support, program and location content, and outreach and marketing. There needs to be a special attention paid to identity of Latinx students as well as how different intensity factors might affect them abroad. International educators can implement the supports mentioned, however, they must keep in mind that Latinx students can have other varying identities. Professionals will need to understand who their Latinx students are individually so not to assume what supports will be most beneficial. Further studies are needed to understand what specific Latinx identities need specific supports. It could depend on intensity combinations and students’ institutions. Keywords: Latinx, study abroad, supports, best practices, identity, international educator

Facebook’s Façade: Understanding The Disillusionment of Tunisian Youth

    No full text
Over the past nine years, Tunisian youth voter participation has been incredibly low. Once leaders of the country during its democratic revolution in January 2011, youth in Tunisia are now disillusioned with the Tunisian political sphere and have remained absent from formal politics, a transition that is both confusing and worrying. Tunisian youth have also had a dominant presence on Facebook during this time, often utilizing the online space for political activity in lieu of voting in elections and holding membership in political parties. This paper examines the relationship between the Facebook usage and participation in elections of Tunisia youth, ultimately suggesting that Facebook has helped exacerbate youth disillusionment and the ensuing issue of low youth voter participation

    Get PDF
During the global pandemic of COVID-19 in early 2020, many countries faced enormous challenges from an economic and public health point of view. Argentina took rapid and drastic measures to combat the spread of the virus, which included a long period of quarantine with very strict controls. This led to a high economic cost in which many workers lost their jobs and sources of income. As a result, an increasing number of people had to depend on help from social institutions to survive or meet their basic needs like food. The soup kitchens - which have existed since the late 1980s - were one of the actors that contributed to the promotion of food security. Through them the government and other organizations provide resources for the preparation and delivery of food in the poorest neighborhoods of the country. This work delves into the question: What role do soup kitchens and social organizations play in this crisis? What action did the government take to face the food crisis? This study analyzes the role and changes that these organizations have through two lenses: the media and personal interviews with referents of social organizations. The means allow us to see how the subject is covered as well as data on data on the problem in general. The interviews reveal some of the realities that soup kitchens face today. In conclusion, it is possible to see how this crisis amplified the current systemic problems that the country is already facing. It also shows the fundamental role that these spaces have as containment for the most vulnerable population. However, it also shows challenges and problems of access to resources of these social organizations

IS THE RESPECTED BIRTH LAW ENOUGH? An investigation on the respected birth and medical interventions through the opinions of health professionals and a civil society organization in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina

A Case Study of Two Buenos Aires Print Media during the Debate in the Argentina National Congress in 2018

    Get PDF
In 2018, the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy Bill was introduced in the Argentina National Congress by the National Campaign for the Right to a Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion, sparking a debate throughout the country on the subject. Given that the print media played an important role in the conversation, I am interested in investigating how two Buenos Aires print media, the newspaper La Nación and the monthly community publication Revista Cítrica framed abortion in the articles they published between June and August 2018. Using a qualitative methodology and taking into account that frames perform four functions: Define problems, diagnose the causes, make moral judgements and suggest remedies, this work considers how these two media aimed to influence their readers about abortion. In the following pages, I first develop a brief summary of the key events in the fight to legalize abortion in Argentina and I explain the perspectives of the Pro-Life side. Second, I outline the history of La Nación and Revista Cítrica and the audience they serve, and I explain the purposes of hegemonic and counter-hegemonic media. Next, I outline the premise of framing theory and how my corpus is constructed. Finally, through an analysis of the articles in my corpus, I identify two frames that both media use: human rights and youth activism, three distinct frames from La Nación: Controversy, economic, and the legitimacy of abortion, and two distinct frames from Revista Cítrica: Public health and the influence of the Church in in the decision to have an abortion. In addition, I compare the articles published by the two media the day after the vote in the Chamber of Deputies and find that Revista Cítrica focused more on the main arguments and La Nación focused more on where political forces are measured

The state of Haitian migrants in Chile has often been studied through a lens of understanding the reasons for migratory flows and their effects on labor markets within the context of the Chilean state. Notable studies such as that of Pedemonte in 2015 studying the matrixes of exclusion of Haitian migrants in Chilean culture and that of Tijoux in 2015 studying the effects of racism and a neoliberal system on migrants, have adopted to explore the adoption of Haitian migrants to Chilean culture and detail the challenges and ways of community building that the Haitian population in Chile has adapted. While these efforts have understood Haitians from a migrant perspective, they have not conceived of Haitians in Chile as a collective with community construction efforts in a Chilean state context. In addition to this lack of perspective, it must be noted that studies to qualitatively understand the role of Haitian Organizations in Chile have been largely limited and only notable efforts of Sepulveda in 2020 have yielded an understanding of how Haitians build their communities. Furthermore, this study aims to conceive of Haitian migrants in Chile from a collective perspective using the theory of social capital, put forth modernly by Putnam, to understand the purpose of the use of online spaces. With the goal of answering the question: What is the characterization of online spaces used by Haitian groups and Hatian organizations in Chile. Through the use of a model combining a quantitative approach to understand details of Haitian group and organization online use and qualitative methods, including an interview with Jorge Vasquez, an understanding of what these spaces mean is generated. The conclusion is reached that these spaces serve to act as social capital that Haitians are often excluded from in Chilean society
