Regenerative Agriculture Framework for Island Ecosystems Using São Miguel as a Case Study
Context: Regenerative agriculture is a farming approach that uses soil health as the entry point to contribute to multiple objectives, such as improved nutrient cycling and climate regulation. Farmers can apply different practices to reach these objectives. The objectives and practices, however, are not equally relevant or applicable for farming systems on island ecosystems and the local context.
Objectives: The main objective of this paper, therefore, is to find out how solutions towards regenerative agriculture can be identified and evaluated as such that they result in meaningful advice for farmers on island ecosystems in order to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Methods: In this study, a well-established modeling framework to redesign farming systems is applied to three typical but diverse Azorean farming systems. The modeling framework combined the regenerative models of Shrefeefel et al. to create an innovative and equally applicable model for farms on island ecosystems. The modeling framework covered a crop farm on andisoil, a dairy farm on andisoil, and a mixed farm on rocky soil. A multitude of solutions is subsequently composed of combinations of practices for these farming systems, each showing solutions that contributed in varying degrees towards the objectives of regenerative agriculture and climate change mitigation
Sustainability and Connection to Place: Land Stewardship through Local Icelandic Women-Run Businesses
Iceland is one of the leading countries in gender equality, but women are still underrepresented in the field of entrepreneurship. Women have unique approaches to land stewardship, and there is evidence that they are more likely than men to act sustainably. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between sustainability and connection to place in women-run, local businesses. I interviewed six women who run a wide range of businesses in the towns of Ísafjörður and Djúpivogur. From these interviews, I found that while the women did not necessarily think that running a business was more difficult as a woman, they felt they had a different experience than a man would in the same field. The six women also had connections to the place they live, and all were taking actions to prioritize sustainability in their work. They focused on place-based experiences and connection to local communities, and many had unique views on land ownership. These women demonstrate the importance of connection to place in sustainability and local businesses and ask us to challenge our own individual land ethic and views on stewardship
A Destabilized World: The Effects of Climate Change on Armed Conflict and International Humanitarian Law
The effects of climate change are becoming more pronounced, and they will have an increasingly destabilizing effect on societies around the globe. This research paper utilizes primary source material (e.g. interviews with field experts) and secondary source material to analyze the relationship between climate change and armed conflict, and the response of international humanitarian law. The consequences of climate change, like changing weather patterns, will increase global migration and strain the resources of host communities. This phenomenon, in addition to other climate-induced factors, may increase the likelihood of armed conflict breaking out. The case studies of the Darfur conflict in Sudan and the Syrian Civil war demonstrate this chain of events. However, the triggers of armed conflict are nuanced, and a comprehensive analysis of conflict drivers is necessary. Systemic issues like poverty can heighten a society’s vulnerability to climate change and conflict, and armed conflict also contributes to environmental harm and degradation. International Humanitarian Law has responded by creating initiatives, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross’ updated 2020 Guidelines on the Protection of the Natural Environment in Armed Conflict and the United Nation’s International Law Commission Draft Principles on Protection of the Environment in Relation to Armed Conflicts
How Does Theater Critically Engage With Contemporary Socio-Political Tensions? A Case Study on Neil Coppen and Mpume Mthombeni’s Isidlamlilo
Historically, South African theater has utilized the stage as a platform to dismantle apartheid, pointing to its purposeful oppressive structure as the cause for much human suffering. In the 28 years since the dismantling of apartheid, contemporary South African theater has retained the same role, critically questioning the ways people are systematically disenfranchised. A need is surfacing, however, to address the causes for contemporary South African political disfunctions and societal inequities, other than apartheid. This study will focus on Isidlamlilo, a play written by Neil Coppen and Mpume Mthombeni in collaboration with their theater company Empatheatre, and will aim to understand how this play follows in the footsteps of previous South African theater, is situated within globally recognized theoretical frameworks, and gives audiences a space to critically engage with contemporary politics. Isidlamlilo was first performed at The 2022 National Arts Festival and was showcased from November 4th through 9th, 2022 at The Elizabeth Sneddon Theater at The University of KwaZulu-Natal. The play tells the life story of Zenzile Maseko, a former Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) assassin who presently resides in a womens hostel in Durban. This study has been specific to a play which has not yet had its impact analyzed. The researcher has observed the rehearsal process, analyzed the script and multiple performances, and facilitated interviews with audience members. Through use of these methodologies, this study has investigated how Isidlamlilo allowed audiences to critically engage with Contemporary South African socio-political tensions. This study finds that the play achieved educational and humanizing effects whilst providing solutions for building a future recognized for its social cohesion and confrontation of contemporary systems of oppression
‘Too shy to talk about this topic’: The impacts of gender conceptions on the embodied sexual experiences and perceptions of urban Vietnamese students in Ho Chi Minh City
This paper aims to articulate how ‘traditional’ gender roles are resisted, conformed to, and changed among youth within the context of Vietnam’s emerging market economy and consumer culture. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of how gender conceptions have progressed throughout Vietnamese history was a significant portion of my research. The data collection consisted of qualitative data through online surveys and in-depth interviews to understand the impacts of Vietnamese gender conceptions on the embodied sexual experiences and perceptions of university students in Ho Chi Minh City. My findings suggest that contemporary Vietnamese youth, specifically students residing in Ho Chi Minh City, are enmeshed in a web of both market and familial pressures, drastically impacting their sex perceptions and experiences. The way that students are impacted by these changes are directly correlated to gender conceptions, of which produce distinct experiences and sometimes, negative sexual health outcomes. It becomes increasingly clear that in order to address issues such as high abortion rates, early pregnancies, sexual assault, and rape, the state must implement policies that listen to the lived experiences, desires, and frustrations of Vietnamese youth
Impact of Community Radio on Community Development in the United States
Community radio is a community-led broadcasting service that serves as a tool for development for communities around the world. This research study explores the development benefits of community radio in the United States using a case study of Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-licensed FM community radio stations to evaluate the role of community radio in communication and information sharing and promoting sustainable social change and development. To fulfill the objectives of the case study, data was collected from 55 community radio stations in the United States using mixed-questionnaire digital surveys and supplementary virtual interviews. Findings indicated that community radio stations in the United States serve as a communication and information-sharing resource to aid communities in overcoming challenges arising from the digital divide. The findings also demonstrated that community radio provides direct development benefits to communities such as aiding in grassroots initiatives, community building, empowering community members, and promoting diversity and inclusion, among others. If provided proper support to overcome barriers and ensure the sustainability of the field, community radio could prove a valuable tool for communities to achieve sustainable social change and development. Keywords: community radio, community development, digital divide, development benefits, sustainabilit
How Ultra Firms in Former Soviet and Yugoslav States Became Political Actors
When you go to a football match one of the first things that you will undoubtedly notice are the ultras. Their loud coordinated chants and movement fill the stadium with energy that would not be there otherwise, and their tifo and flairs add an artist’s touch to the stands. There are ultras for just about every club, and every city in the world, with each group having their own unique identity. The local standing of football clubs, paired with the devoted and organized structure of ultras has seen them become political and military actors across the world. Ultras based in former Yugoslav and Soviet states have gained a reputation for showing Nazi and Fascist symbolism at games, which is especially fascinating when one considers that many of these ultras do so for clubs with communist related names and badges. In this paper I will explore the history of ultras and football former Yugoslav and Soviet states, and to offer a theory for why they came to hold these harmful and fringe ideologies
The law legalizing abortion in Argentina was approved in December of 2020. This expansion of reproductive rights was the result of years of fighting and debate between two opposite activisms, the pro- versus anti- abortion movements. This project is an exploratory investigation of the strategies each activism used, how those strategies have changed before and after the legalization of abortion, and what are the next steps for both groups. Analyzing five interviews with activists from both pro- and anti- abortion movements, complimented with in-depth literature research of the history of the movement, this project revealed two primary axes within the debate. Communication strategies and the distribution of information have been critically developed and well-defined in a post-legalization world, and the virtual space provided by the Internet has created an opportunity to share their respective perspective. In additions, the new agendas implemented by each activisms include the inclusion of cisgender men in their activist space, and the internationalization of their movements
