THE IMPACT OF EXERCISE AND SPORTS ON THE PSYCHOSOCIAL WELL-BEING OF SYRIAN REFUGEE YOUTH
Get PDFPsychosocial well-being is a concept that encompasses mental health and the psychosocial health of an individual. Recreational sports and physical activity have been used to promote health and overall well-being of individuals. The study main aim is to understand the impact that exercise and sports on the psychosocial well-being of Syrian refugee youth in Jordan. In addressing this aim, the following questions were addressed; What have Syrian refugee youth experienced after participation in sports and exercise? and how has exercise and sports affected the lives of Syrian youth refugee?. The hypothesis is that Syrian refugee youth who participate in sports programs or exercise will have an overall better psychosocial well-being. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach to collect data from participants. Data was collected from eight Syrian youth male refugee participants whom age ranged between 18-25 years and participated in sports or exercise programs not less than three months during the course of their lives while in Jordan. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Results revealed four main themes and nine sub-themes; the Psychological Impacts, the Social Impact, The Physical Benefits, and Barriers to Keep Going; The Undiscovered Talent. Each of these categories additionally have nine sub themes to better understand the impact. The sum of the results concluded a positive connection between sports and exercise and how it positively affects and benefits the psychosocial well-being of participants who actively and routinely participated in these activities. This study hopes to contribute to the advocacy of incorporating sports and exercise into mental health programs and interventions for vulnerable youth populations. It is recommended to include females and do further research into how Syrian youth refugees can advance in their sports journeys.

Flujos de servicios ecosistémicos en un área marina protegida del Atlántico Sur: Perspectivas desde el análisis de la teoría de redes
No full textEn cuestiones de gestión de áreas protegidas, los servicios ecosistémicos se tienen cada vez más en cuenta junto con la conservación de la biodiversidad. Sin embargo, las decisiones que se toman sobre la conservación de los servicios ecosistémicos no suelen incluir los posibles efectos en cascada de la pérdida de biodiversidad sobre la provisión de servicios. Los conocimientos de la teoría de redes y los estudios de robustez pueden proporcionar una metodología para evaluar la vulnerabilidad de estos servicios frente la estructura trófica de los ecosistemas que los proveen. A través de una serie de simulaciones de extinción para la red trófica de las Áreas Marinas Protegidas Namuncurá-Banco Burdwood I y II (AMP N-BB, ~54–56°S y ~56–62°O), las primeras por una red de este tamaño, reproduzco los hallazgos de la literatura de que la robustez de las redes tróficas y sus servicios ecosistémicos está altamente correlacionada y que los proveedores de servicios ecosistémicos tienen una contribución relativamente baja a la estabilidad trófica. En adición, identifico las principales implicaciones teóricas y prácticas del modelo, incluyendo las importantes cuestiones para el desarrollo del modelado trófico para servicios ecosistémicos, las características topológicas que pueden contribuir a servicios más robustos y algunas consideraciones para la unificada conservación de servicios ecosistémicos junto con biodiversidad del AMP N-BB.
In protected areas management, ecosystem services are increasingly considered alongside biodiversity conservation. Even so, the decisions made with respect to ecosystem service conservation rarely include the potential cascade effects of biodiversity loss on service provision. Insights from network ecology and robustness studies can provide a methodology to effectively assess the vulnerability of these services with respect to the trophic structures that support them. Through a series of extinction simulations for the food web of the Namuncurá-Burdwood Bank Marine Protected Areas I and II (N-BB MPA, ~54–56°S and ~56–62°W), the first for a network of this size, we reproduce findings in the literature that network and ecosystem service robustness are highly correlated and that ecosystem service providers have a relatively low contribution to trophic stability. Additionally, we identify the major theoretical and practical implications of our model, including the principal questions for the development of trophic modeling for ecosystem services, topological traits which may contribute to more robust services, and several considerations for the unified conservation of ecosystem services alongside biodiversity in the N-BB MPA

No full textEsta investigación se enfoca en analizar las acciones del gobierno de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA) para abordar la salud mental de las personas en situación de calle en 2023. Se examina el estado actual de esta población, identificando factores clave y evaluando las medidas gubernamentales. El marco teórico aborda determinantes sociales y derechos humanos, subrayando la importancia de cambios legislativos para abordar la falta de vivienda. La metodología combina análisis de datos gubernamentales, estudios previos y entrevistas con profesionales de Centros de Inclusión Social. Las organizaciones de la sociedad civil, como Cáritas y la Asociación Civil Isauro Arancibia, desempeñan un papel esencial en llenar las brechas en la atención. El estudio revela desafíos en la obtención y análisis de datos demográficos, destacando la necesidad de enfoques más detallados. Se proponen mejoras en la continuidad y calidad de las acciones actuales, más investigación sobre salud mental y mayor apoyo gubernamental y financiero para los centros de inclusión social.
This investigation focuses on analyzing the actions of the government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) to address the mental health of people experiencing homelessness in 2023. The current state of this population is examined, identifying key factors and evaluating the government measures. The theoretical framework addresses social determinants and human rights, underscoring the importance of legislative changes to address homelessness. The methodology combines analysis of government data, previous studies and interviews with professionals from Social Inclusion Centers. Civil society organizations, such as Cáritas and the Isauro Arancibia Civil Association, play an essential role in filling gaps in care. The study reveals challenges in obtaining and analyzing demographic data, highlighting the need for more detailed approaches. Improvements are proposed in the continuity and quality of current actions, more research on mental health and greater government and financial support for social inclusion centers

No full textLa última dictadura cívico-militar en Argentina es tanto parte del pasado como del futuro. El “Proceso de Reorganización Nacional” instalado por las Fuerzas Armadas trajo opresión política y violencia extrema hacia la gente en contra del régimen. Desde su fin, la sociedad ha enfrentado el problema de cómo recordar esta época. La memoria forma parte importante de la identidad social argentina, pero es complicada debido a la experiencia de determinados grupos durante la dictadura. En estos años, los judíos sufrieron una victimización especial dentro de los campos clandestinos de detención—los sitios de tortura y desaparición—de las Fuerzas Armadas. Mientras algunos actores judíos intentaron vocalizar este antisemitismo, otros prefirieron trabajar dentro del sistema político para evitar otras formas de discriminación. Esas narrativas contradictorias confunden la manera en la que “la comunidad judía” está incluida en la memoria colectiva estatal.
Esta investigación intenta dar cuenta de los conocimientos y los sentimientos sobre la representación de “la comunidad judía” en la memoria colectiva por parte de jóvenes judías en Buenos Aires. A través de entrevistas con jóvenes, explicaré de dónde y qué información se difunde en este grupo. A partir de mis datos, tocaré la ideas de interseccionalidad, pertenencia, y negacionismo. Discutiré el hallazgo de que los jóvenes judíos creen que una mayor educación sobre la memoria puede proteger contra negacionismo y empezar a crear un espacio dentro la sociedad para la identidad judía argentina o argentina judía
Estudiantes Mapuche Universitarios: El Desarrollo de Conciencia Crítica Dentro La Sistema de Neoliberalismo Multicultural
Get PDFThe current education system in Chile has adopted a multicultural neoliberal model, in which education both as an institution and as a practice is conducted with neoliberal ideologies. Mapuche movements in Chile have largely battled against neoliberalism, which operates in conjunction with colonial practices. The identity of Mapuche people thus operates on a contradiction of neoliberal practices. This paper, centralizing critical educational literature and three interviews with Mapuche university students, strives to analyze this tension between Mapuche identity and student experiences under this neoliberal context. More specifically, this paper grapples with the political intention behind multicultural neoliberalism, and how it impacts the development of critical consciousness in youth. It concludes that Mapuche youth identity is entwined and developed alongside critical consciousness, and this development of identity and critical consciousness continues to develop under a neoliberal context, but in a manner that maintains a critique of the system. It calls for centralizing youth and student experiences under the neoliberal context as the best manner to understand exactly how and in what ways neoliberal multiculturalism masks and maintains oppression in educational contexts
No Woman Left Behind: Women’s Lived Experiences, purposes, and perceptions on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) of Maasai and Datoga communities in Arusha, Tanzania
Get PDFFemale genital mutilation (FGM) has been practiced for centuries around the world, currently FGM occurs in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Even though many counties like Tanzania has outlawed FGM and stating it is a violation of human rights, many people continue the procedure without adequate education on FGM. While believing the decline in number of FGM incidences and there is still a lack of local women perspectives and their respective lived experiences on the matter. This is particularly true in some Tanzanian rural and male dominated tribes where most women are educated with limited freedom of speech such as in some parts of the Arusha region. The purpose of the study is to examine lived personal experiences, purposes, and perceptions by women undergone or practiced FGM by Maasai and Datoga women with the Arusha region. Key informant interviews and semi structured interviews were used to collect data in the two study sites. The results indicate that women who have undergone or practiced FGM in Maasai communities conclude FGM as a traumatic experience. However, the results indicate Datoga women who have undergone or practiced FGM concludes FGM as normal and not a memorable experience. In conclusion, the acquired findings has led to more effective strategies for eradicating FGM while respecting cultural diversity and understanding experiences and perspectives
Always Sunny in Zanzibar: Exploring Solar Power on the Island
Get PDFAs Zanzibar continues along its developmental path, the island’s energy infrastructure takes on a central role in future plans for growth. Critically, as the population grows and tourist presence is predicted to increase, the island is presented with the combined problem of supplying a greater volume of energy, while also providing a more reliable source to its existing populace. In this study, I will examine existing solar energy systems for capacity, accessibility, and reliability, as well as evaluate their efficacy in providing a functional source of power, both now and in the future. I conduct interviews with assorted stakeholders in the photovoltaic market. I argue that high costs and lack of infrastructure has prevented the growth of the sector in urban areas, while it has been essential for electrifying rural ones. I claim that changing public perception of solar as well as creating economic incentives will facilitate a proliferation of solar energy in Zanzibar. Further, I will outline possible routes for development as the island looks towards the future. This analysis sheds light on the functionality of energy systems in Zanzibar, and how solar power can improve their capacity, reliability, and accessibility
The Legacy of War: A Holistic Analysis of Socio-Economic and Healthcare Resources for People Affected by Agent Orange In Việt Nam
Get PDFThe war between the United States of America and Northern Việt Nam lasting from 1955 to 1975 did not end with the removal of American troops from Vietnamese soil, but it rears its ugly head daily in the lives of those affected by Agent Orange and other various Rainbow Dioxins utilized as herbicides. This paper delves into the enduring legacy of the Resistance War Against America, specifically focusing on the socio-economic and medical ramifications for families and individuals affected by Agent Orange that persist half a century after its prohibition. The study scrutinizes the disparities in aid between American veterans and Vietnamese civilians, shedding light on the inadequacies in addressing the long-term consequences of toxin exposure. Through interviews with the Việt Nam Association for Victims of Agent Orange and visits to daycare facilities for people affected by dioxin, this project advocates for a paradigm shift in the allocation of funds, urging a redirection of resources towards the well-being of affected Vietnamese civilians rather than primarily channeling aid into remediation projects and disability policies. By exploring alternative avenues, such as community-based financial initiatives and educational programs, the paper suggests a more equitable distribution of aid that addresses the holistic needs of those impacted by the aftermath of herbicidal warfare
Inside the Wave: How “The 100 Foot Wave” Changed the Lives of the Local community in Nazaré
Get PDFSurfing and surfing tourism are a critical part of Portugal’s economy and culture. Nazaré is a town that embodies a transition from a traditional fishing village to one that lives and breathes surf. Such a quick change in the leading industry of a town raises concerns about the impacts it has on the community. Therefore, the project focuses on the economic, social and cultural, and environmental impacts of tourism intensification on the local community in Nazaré through the perspective of the local people who are directly impacted and witness these changes. Other stakeholders are included, such as the Garrett McNamara Foundation and the Nazaré Municipality, to create an all-encompassing analysis. The results show that increases in surfing tourism have increased economic revenue and opportunities in Nazaré, but have also reduced the ability of locals to afford living there. It was also found that such a transition is evolving the locals\u27 relationship with the ocean to become more positive. Cultural exchanges also lead to more open-minded perspectives, the learning of new languages and cultures, and the sharing of stories. However, an increase in tourism leads to environmental costs, such as increased pollution and urban waste. Nevertheless, a focus on surfing tourism embraces nature and teaches all those who live within it to protect it, resulting in higher rates of environmental stewardship in Nazaré
National Development and the Sustainability of Mining in the Atacama Desert, Chile
Get PDFAs climate change continues to intensify on a global scale, efforts have been made to implement renewable energies and progressive technologies. These tools are critical in the shift towards a more sustainable practice, and yet analysis of localized impacts from the development of these mechanisms is inadequate. Chile has been and continues to be a leading country in mineral extraction, with an economic history founded in the mining industry. The establishment of mining in Chile as a progressive tool has aided the social and economic development of the nation. Consequences of mining extraction, however, include intensive environmental degradation, human rights violations, infringement of indigenous peoples’ lands and cultures, growing social and economic disparities and injustices, and contamination. This research addresses and challenges notions of mining in relation to sustainable development and employs interviews and prior published literature on social policy and mining reports to argue that the impact of mining must be enhanced in order for the industry to become more sustainable in future years. These investigations highlight the severity of mining as a form of sustainable development by arguing that mining in the Atacama Desert of Chile has created asymmetrical impacts on social, environmental, and economic functions of the region, particularly for local and indigenous communities. Current Chilean mining industry practices must be revised to ensure a sustainable and positive socio-environmental future for the Chilean people and local ecosystems
