Child Nutrition and Fitness in Switzerland and the United Kingdom: Analyzing Preventative Solutions for the Developing Obesity and Diabetes Crises

    Get PDF
The current study takes a novel approach to analyzing how child nutrition and fitness can be used as preventative measures to solve the ongoing crises of obesity and diabetes. A comparison case-study between two stereotypically different European nations, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, was utilized to address how nutrition and fitness education, policy, culture and programs affect the health of the country. Each nation was analyzed comprehensively, accounting for dietary and exercise practices from infant stages to adolescence. Personal interviews with experts in the fields of breastfeeding, nutrition and fitness provided the main sources of information. Primary research was supplemented with data and studies collected from the literature, to provide a well-rounded depiction of nutrition and fitness cultures in Switzerland and the UK. Following investigation into the countries’ practices, non-communicable disease (NCD) rates were consulted in an attempt to draw a correlation between the observed differences in nutrition and fitness culture and disease trends. While a specific causative relationship was nearly impossible to draw, the anecdotal data support the notion that poorer nutrition and fitness cultures in the UK are an unquestioned factor in the higher obesity and overweight rates seen in this country. The results depicted in this study give credence to the notion that proper public health policy, programs and educational initiatives targeting infant to adolescent nutrition and fitness can be used as powerful preventative mechanisms to slow the spread of NCDs such as obesity and diabetes

“Komt Een Vrouw Bij De Dokter”: Do Healthcare Systems For Women Affect Self-Perception of Sexuality in the NL & US?

    No full text
This qualitative research study explores the possible effects that the two different healthcare systems in the Netherlands and the United States may have on young women’s perception of their own sexuality and sexual practices. Through survey and interview, this study focuses on the experiences of young Dutch and U.S. women between the ages of 18 and 22 within their respective reproductive healthcare systems. It focuses on the levels of openness and honesty that patients have within each system, and examines what topics are being discussed in reproductive healthcare appointments within the two countries. Overall, it was discovered that young Dutch women feel less comfortable than their American peers when it comes to asking questions or divulging information to their physicians regarding their reproductive health and sexual practices, which may have a negative internalized effect on their self-perception of their sexuality and sexual practices. Keywords: reproductive healthcare, U.S, Netherlands, young women, honesty, comfor

“No somos ratones”: La negociación de disciplina, democracia y derechos en la convivencia escolar Un estudio etnográfico del Liceo Confederación Suiza

    No full text

    Teaching Conflict Transformation Through Stories

    Get PDF
This work consists of a didactic compilation of 10 stories, which include fables, folktales, and one true story. These stories have been adapted into lessons and they focus mainly on the themes of conflict transformation and conflict resolution. Through a series of steps, structured by activities, learners will be able to experience working with several diverse scenarios of conflict. Part of these activities will require learners to relate and apply the issues in the stories both to themselves and to pertinent contexts of reality. Thus, this material constitutes a practical and experiential guide to the development and application of skills on promoting and implementing alternative ways to address conflict resolution. Its main objective is to prepare and equip learners and instructors alike to take an active part and be instruments in the task of furthering the so desperate and needed efforts towards peace

The Circle of Empowerment: The Nzinga Group\u27s Approach to Empowering Afro-Brazilian Adolescent Girls and Women Through the Cultural Tradition of Capoeira Angola

    Get PDF
Around the world gender and racial inequality leads to lower levels of empowerment related to self-esteem, autonomy, and self-confidence. These difficulties are exacerbated for girls and women who are faced with overcoming the double-stigmatization of being both black and female. However, Afro- Brazilian girls and women, when given the tools and support to empower themselves will empower their communities. Through a mixed-method approach of participatory research, observations, and nine interviews, this paper explores how the tradition of Capoeira Angola and specifically the roda, empowers Afro-Brazilian girls and women. More specifically, I examine how, through Capoeira, the process of “empowerment” can be taught, learned, and practiced through Capoeira as a method of overcoming double-stigmatization. The results of this study are based on a case study of the Nzinga Capoeira Angola Group in Alto da Sereia, Salvador, Brazil. The group’s pedagogy of teaching Capoeira Angola focuses on empowering all of its capoeiristas though equality, preservation of the Angola tradition, and community. By understanding their approach, other community-based organizations in Brazil can learn how, through the practice of Capoeira Angola, they can support the next generation of Afro-Brazilian women

Strategic Study Abroad: A Program Proposal for Continued Faith Development of Chi Alpha Students Studying Abroad

    Get PDF
With around 28,000 individual participants, Chi Alpha is a diverse network of Christian students on U.S. college campuses. By regularly meeting in groups and collectively reaching out to the community, students develop their faith and build lasting relationships. Faith development is an integral part of Chi Alpha students’ lives. Yet, because community is an important aspect in faith development, studying abroad can cause challenges. Students expressed missing accessible Christian peer support and mentorship while abroad. They further expressed disconnection from their faith and felt their spirituality had declined while studying abroad. As study abroad participation has been increasing over the past decade, the Chi Alpha executive ministry team turned new attention towards programming for study abroad students. A faith development program to operate concurrently with a student’s study abroad program was created. In relation to its name, Strategic Study Abroad aims to motivate Chi Alpha students to be strategic, not separating their cross-cultural learning experience from their beliefs, but engage their faith into the learning experience. Ensuring Social Success: Assessing the Factors that Affect the Social Experiences of International Students at a Large, Urban Community College in Texas

    Get PDF
According to the 2014 Open Doors report published by the Institute of International Education, 87,963 international students enrolled in community colleges and/or associate’s degree granting institutions during the 2013-2014 academic year. Community colleges offer many benefits to international students, such as lower tuition, less restrictive English proficiency requirements, smaller class size, and transferability of credits to four-year institutions. Past studies have found connections between social relationships and the ability to manage acculturative stress and student satisfaction. Nevertheless, international students attending a community college face different social challenges than those who choose to attend a residential four-year university. Lack of student housing and common areas, campuses spread across large metropolitan areas, and large non-traditional student populations are just some of the factors that may affect an international student’s ability to develop a social support network while attending a community college. Focusing on the individual experiences of international students at Austin Community College (ACC), this study utilized both qualitative face-to-face interviews and a quantitative Likert-scale survey to identify key factors that affected the international students’ abilities to develop friendships and participate successfully in the social aspects of a community college. Although each individual’s experience varied, cultural differences, perceptions of English speaking abilities, and willingness to engage with domestic students all emerged as common threads in the students’ experiences. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that international student advisors be located at every campus, and if possible, a single advisor works with a specific international student, taking them through the transition. It is also recommended that changes be made to the international student orientation, such as seating students according to country of origin, and having representatives of the various campus organizations present

The Effect of Service-Learning on Social Identity Development: The Impact Scholars Program

    No full text
This paper looks at service-learning as a form of experiential learning, attempts to find an all-encompassing definition of service-learning and discusses the outcomes as they relate to social identity development. This paper strives to discover if the Impact Scholars Program and its current framework impacts the social identity development of participants, as well as, which parts of the framework are or are not functioning. This is done by following the voyage of all five Impact Scholars on the fall 2014 voyage and distributing an embarkation and disembarkation survey as well as conducting a mid-term interview. These data were then taken and analyzed. The Impact Scholars Program, indeed effects the social identity development of its participants, particularly their development of purpose. It also effects their established identity and development of integrity though not significantly. The pieces of the framework that are particularly positive are the small size of the program and the relationships that ISE has overseas. The pieces of the framework that could be improved upon are the student context, course connection, supervision, objectives, Impact Opportunity context, and Impact specific reflections. This is an effective program that can be strengthened for even more impact of the social identity development of its participants
