The Impact of Jordan’s Peacebuilding Efforts in Gaza on its Domestic Politics

    Get PDF
The Israeli-Palestine conflict has persisted for decades, becoming one of the world\u27s longest unresolved conflicts. It is a long-standing struggle for sovereignty and territorial legitimacy on the land between the Jordan River on the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. Since the UN Partial Plan in 1947 and the formation of the country of Israel until the most recent war started by the attack of Hamas on October 7, 2023, this conflict has shaped the politics of the Middle East. Jordan as its closest neighbor has especially been impacted by the developments of the conflict. Taking into consideration that nearly half of the Jordanian population has Palestinian origins and the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations, this paper aims to examine Jordan\u27s efforts and governmental policies aimed at fostering peace in Palestine. It focuses on determining the impact of these efforts on Jordanian domestic politics. It analyzes its political impact in terms of governmental stability and electoral dynamics and its economic impact. Jordanian efforts are reflected in a strong diplomatic presence in international organizations and good bilateral relations with Western partners as well as focusing on providing humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. The impact of the war in Gaza can be seen in economic terms with the decrease in trade and increase in unemployment. The Jordanian government is also being criticized for not doing enough for Palestinians which affects their stability before the upcoming parliamentary elections. The long-term effects of the war in Gaza remain uncertain

    No full text
This project investigates how government responses to unpaid care work performed by women, during the time of the socioeconomic crisis of the pandemic, impact the use of time in unpaid domestic care work by women in Argentina. Drawing on feminist theory from the work of Verónica Gago, Lucí Cavallero and Tithi Bhattacharya, this project creates a critical perspective on the interrelationships between gender, economics, debt, and reproductive labor. The method of analysis follows with descriptions of governmental responses to the issue of care and also presentations of data from the 2013 and 2021 National Time Use Surveys to see differences and acts as a place to think about how the crisis and responses impact women\u27s unpaid work in Argentina. Then, with quotes and information from interviews with workers at the organization Fundar, this report analyzes the responses and data together to look at how they impact women and also how these impacts are continuing today

White-Fronted Capuchins (Cebus albifrons aequatorialis) in La Hesperia Cloud Forest Reserve: A Study of Aggressive Behaviors in Response to Human Presence

    Get PDF
The Ecuadorian white-fronted capuchin, Cebus albifrons aequatorialis, is a critically endangered primate species native to Ecuador and northern Peru. Their population consists of only a handful of surviving troops spread out across this region. One surviving population exists in La Hesperia Cloud Forest Reserve in Ecuador. This reserve serves as an education and volunteer site for dozens of international travelers every year. I studied the effect of the presence of humans and the lodging they have constructed. Specifically, I investigated the effect on behavior of the proximity of the troops alpha male to manmade structures in the reserve. I found that the alpha was significantly more likely to exhibit aggressive behaviors when close to a structure. With 10.21% of all behaviors observed close to the structures being aggression, compared to only 0.39% in any other location. The reason for their tendency to travel within a close proximity to a structures is theorized to be for foraging needs, as foraging consisted of 41.53% of behaviors near structures and only 11.37% away from structures. This relationship is extremely concerning because acts of aggression in primates are known to increase the individual\u27s stress levels. Elevated stress levels can have a plethora of negative health effects and decrease an individual\u27s net fitness. For a species so critically endangered the utmost care must be taken with surviving members of the species. With the results from my study I recommend attempting to reduce the potential contact with the troop in locations with a structure by removing all possible foraging sites within 25 meters

This research project analyzes the evolution of traditional medicine in the Oaxacan context as a result of occurrences of the last decade, including the pandemic and the growth of social media. Based on my conversations with traditional healers and an analysis of previous research, I will use a theoretical framework of globalization and cultural adaptation to study the changing practices of healers and the changing popularity of traditional medicine. Additionally, I will analyze the relationship between migration and the use of natural medicine as a transnational health practice. Finally, I will conclude by discussing the importance of preserving the practice. My aim for this study is to contribute to the understanding of traditional medicine to those who don’t practice it, highlight its importance, and expand its relevance in our societies

Prioritizing Indigenous Participation and Compensation in Research

    Get PDF
Throughout history, the dynamic between colonial entities and indigenous groups has been characterized by exploitation and power imbalance. Indigenous knowledge has the potential to positively impact the world, through medicinal breakthroughs, radical approaches to sustainability, cultural heritage, systems of learning and adaptation, and more. Particularly in the context of research, fields like anthropology, botany and pharmacology serve to benefit from indigenous knowledge, but these interactions cannot continue to be based on extraction at the cost of indigenous communities. This work will discuss the future of relationships between researchers and indigenous communities; how this power dynamic must be transformed into an ethical partnership that prioritizes indigenous involvement and compensates contributions. Dr. Brij Kothari\u27s concept of Rights to the Benefits of Research provides a framework to explore case studies that demonstrate both positive and negative precedents of relationships between researchers and indigenous stakeholders. The participation of indigenous community members should be facilitated and promoted throughout the design, execution, and analysis of research. This is an ethical necessity, as well as being crucial to contextualizing and understanding results. Furthermore, researchers should compensate indigenous contributions in a manner determined by both parties. Respect and empowerment are the core of these guidelines, and any external party interacting with an indigenous one should prioritize the adoption of these moral and ethical tenets

Environmental Analysis of Codfish Production and Consumption in Portugal

    Get PDF
Codfish, a typical dish consumed frequently in Portugal, is fished in the cold Northern Atlantic waters far from the Portuguese coast. Thus, regional tensions and the environmental impacts of Portuguese codfish importation and production are significant current issues. The present study uses a life cycle assessment methodology to evaluate the array of environmental impacts of the production of 1 kg of codfish, following a cradle to gate approach. The life cycle inventory was grouped into catch and preprocessing, transit, and curing stages. The data collection of products and processes in each stage was based on scientific peer reviewed documents, technical reports, and the Ecoinvent database. The ReCiPe 2016 method, both midpoint and endpoint, was applied to determine the impacts of codfish production using SimaPro software. Results show that the curing stage of production is responsible for most environmental impacts (90-99%), followed by the capturing stage (25-45%). Thus, improving factory efficiency and adjusting fishing techniques are key factors to increase the sustainability of the codfish life cycle

Linking Language Use Practices and Valued Teacher Capabilities: A Mixed Methods Study of English-As-A-Foreign-Language Teacher Educators

    Get PDF
This mixed-methods study explored how much English-as-a-foreign-language teacher educators used English, Spanish, or a combination of those languages in teaching content courses (e.g., pedagogy, linguistics) and how their language use practices related to the teacher capabilities they most valued. Quantitative data was collected with a survey of 115 teacher educators from 21 Ecuadorian universities. Most participants reported teaching in English while incorporating some Spanish, usually in minimal amounts; most believed in minimizing Spanish. Ordinary least squares regression analysis indicated the amount of Spanish included related to teacher educators’ prioritization of teacher empowerment over accountability to standards and to teacher educators’ own English proficiency. Qualitative data was collected in focus group interviews with a subset of 37 teacher educators from 18 universities. Thematic analysis showed how educators linked English-only practices with fostering English proficiency and multilingual practices with fostering non-linguistic capabilities, especially teacher identity and cognition; factors perceived as constraining teachers’-in-formation conversion of English-medium course inputs into valued capabilities were especially salient for teacher educators with multilingual approaches. The mixed-methods integration concluded that valued teacher capabilities were linked to teacher educators’ language use in a relationship closely bound with the affordances and constraints of specific contexts. Language ideologies and teacher educator characteristics also had a role in language use practices. The study provides insight into the potential of multilingual approaches in global English language teacher education and higher education more generally, and urges educators and programs to critically reflect on what contextualized language use practices align with their values and goals

Exploring the Medicalization of Menstruation: Analyzing Menstrual Hygiene Initiatives by IGOs, Non-Profits and National Government in Switzerland

    Get PDF
Menstrual health serves as a critical indicator of reproductive health. It is pivotal in achieving various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to women\u27s and girls\u27 comfort, agency, participation, safety, well-being, and dignity (Loughnan et al., 2020). This research investigates the medicalization of menstruation in Switzerland through a mixed-methods approach examining the strategies and roles of key stakeholders such as the WHO, local government initiatives, and NGOs in shaping the landscape of menstrual medicalization. The findings reveal that while medicalization has brought about progressive changes, including the introduction of menstrual leave policies, it has resulted in a complex regulatory landscape, increased availability of menstrual products and treatments, and a significant influence of medical guidelines on diagnosing and treating menstruation-related conditions. The research highlights an urgent need for collaborative efforts across various sectors to develop holistic and inclusive menstrual hygiene initiatives. This includes further research to explore the potential marginalization of alternative health narratives and healing practices concerning menstruation and refining the regulatory framework for menstrual products and treatments to ensure safety, efficacy, and proper labeling. Recognizing the complexities of menstrual medicalization and striving for a balanced and inclusive approach can guide stakeholders toward fostering more humane and effective menstrual healthcare for all individuals and communities, both locally and globally
