    Get PDF
This purpose of this study is to find out what role agents play through marketing community colleges in the Swedish education market and recruiting Swedish students to U.S. community colleges. This study explores Swedish education agents’ perspectives of the community college system in the United States, their experiences in marketing community colleges in Sweden, and the factors that may lead to or prohibit the success in recruiting Swedish students for U.S. community colleges. Qualitative research methods were used, which included preliminary surveys, interviews, an analysis of the agents’ marketing strategies, and a review of relevant studies. The findings revealed that agents are aware of the key benefits of attending a U.S. community college: affordability, simple admissions process, and university transfer options. Disadvantages were also noted, which included the absence of experiencing a typical American college experience and lack of on-campus housing. The marketing tactics that the agencies used ranged in size and scope. Some of the agents focused on digital marketing tactics, while others focused on a more personal approach. The research revealed that the principle difficulty in marketing community colleges to Swedish students is that they are unfamiliar with the concept of community colleges. The importance of building strong partnerships between institutions and agency partners was also indicated through this investigation. The results of this study can be used by U.S. community colleges, in order to develop successful international student recruitment and marketing strategies in Sweden. Additionally, this study provides researchers, faculty, and staff at community colleges in the United States with insight on how community colleges are perceived by Swedish students and their parents

    Get PDF
Conflict in Africa remains one of the continent’s principal development challenges (David, 2009). However, peace remains the highest priority in the minds of people across all of the African continent. The unfortunate violence and conflict have left so many African citizens to constantly live in fear, and this fear has increased the urge for many to flee their countries for safety. This research study seeks to explore the experience of West African refugees in the United States with more focus on Baltimore City. This research work also examines their integration process and challenges they face, including the opportunities they receive and bring to the United States. Ten West African refugees from Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, and Guinea were interviewed. The Researcher collected data through a focus group and a face to face interview with each of the participants. From the findings, six principal themes were generated: safety, advanced educational system, rigorous application process, language, economic factor, and attitude. This research work suggests how stakeholders can improve in making the integration process less stressful for refugees

Community Viability and Marine Conservation: Hybrid Resource Management and the Role of the Coral Triangle Center on Pulau Ay, Indonesia

    Get PDF
This qualitative research explores the traditional marine resource management system of sasi on Pulau Ay, Maluku, Indonesia and how it has been adapted under modern circumstances to promote conservation. The study was based on interviews with staff of the marine conservation NGO Coral Triangle Center (CTC) and the local Conservation Team, narratives of traditional leader elders, and focus groups with local fisherman. The first section of the findings articulates their perspectives on the historic and current situation regarding sasi and conservation on Pulau Ay. The study then utilizes The Interdependence of Ecosystem and Community Viability: A Theoretical Framework to Guide Research and Application (Michaelidou, 2002) and Cinner and Aswani’s (2007) model of hybrid resource management to analyze conservation strategies on Pulau Ay that promote local culture and community participation. Additionally, this study examines the function of the Coral Triangle Center as the lead civil society institution working toward conservation on Pulau Ay. One of the key conclusions is that the CTC provides an example of how marine conservation NGOs can facilitate a hybridization of traditional and modern management practices and rebuild cultural practices related to marine resource interactions to harness a community’s sense of ownership and enable viable conservation conditions. This research ultimately serves to illustrate how community and ecological viability are interdependent, making cultural sustainability and community participation key elements to ecosystem viability

La reconstrucción del debate en Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia: Una herramienta para la auto-descolonización y el desarrollo de un pensamiento crítico entre jóvenes.

    No full text
Debate improves public speaking ability, critical thinking, and self-‐ confidence. It also empowers students to challenge their beliefs and understand the world around them. It has been used in a variety of educational systems as a developmental tool that promotes democratic citizenship and civic engagement. In Bolivia, however, it is an under-‐used resource. In this essay, I reflect on my experiences teaching and creating sustainable debate programs in partnership with local schools in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. Through an analysis of my successes and failures, I find that differing cultural and economic climates affect the way educators should teach and utilize debate in the classroom. I hope that my experiences contribute to the scholarly conversation on how to best teach debate in developing and non-‐western contexts.

A Qualitative Investigation on the Effects of the Uttar Pradesh Population Policy on Women who Undergo Sterilization in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh

    Get PDF
The effectiveness of population policies is widely disputed by the international development community and is under constant scrutiny. While these policies have the potential to positively affect reproductive and child health indicators, they often focus too heavily on macro-demographic family planning goals and fail to acknowledge socioeconomic determinants of fertility indicators, often making for ineffective policy. Furthermore, target-based approaches have the potential to negatively impact women’s family planning choices and the quality of care they receive. This study seeks to analyze how the Uttar Pradesh Population Policy affects the decision-making process and experiences of women who undergo sterilization procedures in rural Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh. 10 women between the ages of 26-38 who had undergone a sterilization procedure within the last 5 years, and 5 accredited social health activists (ASHAs) were interviewed in order to obtain perspectives on first-hand experiences and the sociocultural and policy-related factors that influenced them. Results showed that family members, community health workers, personal desires, and overarching policy goals all influenced the women’s decisions, and her experience was sometimes negatively impacted by lack of quality healthcare workers. Additionally, women were not influenced by monetary incentives. Thus, the research calls into question the use of compensation packages for family planning methods, and shows the need for population policies to focus on reproductive and child health rather than meeting family planning goals

La creación de crianza: un retrato de la niñez en Martín Centeno

    No full text
In the ever-shifting landscape of rural Nicaragua, how do new developments affect the ways in which children make sense of their worlds and their identities? Taking place in Martín Centeno, a cooperative community near Río Blanco in the Department of Matagalpa that was founded in the 80s for families displaced by the war, the present study borrows the theoretical framework of children’s geographies. Through observation, interviews, and visual research methods, this study paints a portrait of childhood in Martín Centeno today, as well as highlighting ways it has changed over time. The study places particular emphasis on the role of television within the community, and the concerns and hopes that citizens of Martín Centeno have about how that role might continue to develop

Migrant Access to Healthcare: A Study of Undocumented Migrant Access to Sexual Healthcare & Family Planning Services in Switzerland in 2016

    Get PDF
The Swiss healthcare system has experienced a significant influx of vulnerable migrants over the past few years. This presents a challenge to providers and policy makers to account for and provide aid to these non-‐ Swiss citizens, such as undocumented migrants (UDM), whose status and circumstances may impede their access to healthcare. Along with this, various cultural barriers may present further challenges to access to the health system. This paper explores UDM access to health through the lens of sexual healthcare and family planning. In examining sexual health, the issues of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV/AIDS, and sexual violence were chosen to provide a general framework of the issue. The paper also evaluates what family planning services are accessible to UDM in examining the issues of contraception and abortions. The barriers that UDM face in accessing these sexual healthcare and family planning services in Switzerland were studied and the health system’s responses in combatting these barriers to care are explored and evaluated. The study concludes in presenting a series of potential future actions to further improve UDM access to sexual healthcare and family planning services as well as the greater health system in Switzerland

A Precarious Paradigm: Seeking Alternatives to Public-Private Partnerships in Health, a Case for the Code

    Get PDF
Background: Breastfeeding is an unparalleled source of nutrition for infants and young children and is recommended as the best practice universally by the World Health Organization (WHO). The benefits in human health and development that result from exclusive and sustained breastfeeding have enormous economic development potential. Because of the non-legally binding nature of the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes (the Code), and shifting socio-cultural norms, breastfeeding rates are at an alarming low. In order to progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, breastfeeding practices must be protected, promoted, and supported worldwide. Objective: This research paper explores implementing strong measures of accountability to the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes as an alternative framework to the public private partnership model in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using the example of infant feeding as a case study in the detrimental effects of industry involvement in policy decisions. Method: An interactive research approach was used. Research was done through a literature and policy review, followed by the collection of primary data through interviews with experts in the field. Results/findings: This paper finds that the intimate involvement of corporations with the private sector is detrimental from the point of view of public health, and that Goal 17 in the SDGs has the potential to undermine the entire Sustainable Development Agenda for 2030. Conclusions: In progressing toward the Sustainable Development Goals, it is essential that alternative models to public-private partnerships be considered. Opting for more cost effective interventions, such as the implementation of the Code as national laws and the creation of a universal accountability mechanism have the potential to advance the Sustainable Development Agenda without compromising public interests. Further research must be done so as to establish a financing framework on a country-by-country basis

An Old and New START to Russian—United States Nuclear Arms Control Agreements

    Get PDF
The Russian Federation and the United States of America signed on April 8, 2010 the New START nuclear arms control treaty. The New START treaty replaced the lackluster SORT treaty in order to establish a nuclear agreement that would put new limits on numbers of weapons and delivery vehicles while also establishing an innovative framework for transparency and data transfer to allow confidence building between two countries that have not always seen eye-to-eye. Through academic analysis, treaty text, and four formal interviews, the context and trajectory of Russian-United States’ arms control treaties has formed to portray New START as a continuation of the arms control tradition initially established by the Soviet Union and the U.S. Although there are substantial threats to the implementation and productivity of the newest nuclear arms control treaty, New START has sustained and proves to be a significant connection between Russia and the United States. The ulterior motives for each country to ratify and maintain New START counterbalance so as to result in strategic stability
