Breast Cancer Screening in Yaoundé, Cameroon: Practices, Awareness, and Perceptions
Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, yet detection and treatment centers are not always widely available. This research project aims to assess the awareness and perceptions of breast cancer screening practices among women in Cameroon through observing healthcare centers in Yaoundé and conducting interviews with health professionals and a randomized selection of women. The main objective of the study was to identify the resources available for breast cancer screening in Yaoundé and to examine the barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment. Furthermore, the research investigates the available detection devices for breast cancer, particularly focusing on medical imaging devices and mammographies. The results convey that there is a general lack of awareness about the procedure of clinical screening and breast self-examination, but there is not a significant lack of understanding about the disease. Most women perceive breast cancer to be a death sentence, and as such, women sometimes avoid breast cancer screening. Key Words: Cancer/Breast Cancer, Accessibility, Health Services, Women’s Health
Effects of Land-use Types on Avian Functional Diversity in Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania
This research examined avian abundance and functional diversity across four human land uses— monoculture, mixed farming, rural, and urban areas—in the Kilimanjaro Region of Northern Tanzania. Conducted in November 2024, the study aimed to assess how different land-use types influence avian composition and functional diversity. A quasi-experimental design was employed, using purposive sampling to select study sites and systematic random sampling point counts to observe bird species present in each land-use type. A literature review was also conducted to classify species into families and categorize them into functional feeding guilds: predators, insectivores, frugivores, granivores, and nectarivores. Statistical analyses, including ANOVA, Tukey’s HSD , and Fisher’s exact tests, were used to explore differences in family and species abundance, as well as functional diversity across the sites. The results revealed significant differences (p \u3c 0.01) in avian community composition across monoculture, mixed farming, rural, and urban landscapes, with monoculture having the highest number of individual birds. Significant differences (p \u3c 0.05) in family and species compositions were found between monoculture and the other land-use types. Regarding functional diversity, significant differences were found across all land-use comparisons (p \u3c 0.01), except between rural and mixed farming habitats (p \u3c 0.01), which exhibited the highest functional diversity richness but were not significantly different from each other. This similarity may be due to the proximity of small farming plots to homes in rural Kilimanjaro. The findings highlight the importance of land-use types in shaping avian functional diversity and structure. Further studies should explore regional variations and the long-term effects of different land-use types on avian communities. Most importantly, testing and implementing various mitigation strategies to conserve avian functional diversity in human-dominated landscapes will be crucial for future biodiversity conservation efforts
A Green Exercise Lifestyle: The Relationship between Outdoor Exercise, Nature Connection, and Pro-Environmental Behavior
This study investigates the hypothesized relationship between green exercise, nature connection, and pro-environmental behavior, exploring how engagement in outdoor exercise influences individuals\u27 environmental attitudes and behaviors. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through surveys, interviews, and personal reflection. Findings reveal that outdoor exercise participants exhibit equal or stronger connections to nature and higher levels of pro-environmental behavior than their indoor counterparts– nature connection scores for outdoor groups were consistently equal to or higher than those of indoor groups, and their pro-environmental behavior scores significantly surpassed indoor groups. Subgroup trends highlighted unique patterns, such as a productivity-driven focus among pool swimmers and outdoor and indoor gym users and consistently high connection scores across both indoor and outdoor yoga practitioners. These findings underscore the potential of green exercise as a catalyst for enhancing environmental awareness and sustainable behavior. Promoting outdoor exercise not only benefits individual well-being but also fosters a collective environmental ethic, providing a compelling case for increasing access to and opportunities for green exercise in diverse communities. This research contributes to the broader discourse on sustainability and equity, advocating for integrative strategies that prioritize environmental and social health
Youth Alchemy: Non-Formal Learning around Identity & Agency
The social and educational disruption during confluence of COVID isolation and Black Lives Matter protests was critical to learning and agency amongst Youth of Color. This phenomenological qualitative study centers around Youth of Color in Providence, Rhode Island as they contested formal education and sought to make meaning of these events. Drawing on Amartya Sen’s capability approach, a series of in-depth phenomenological interviews with participants to explore the meaning they gleaned from their engagement in Youth-led emancipatory educational initiatives, particularly in terms of their sense of identity and agency. Although existing literature documents Youth resistance, this study explores Youth reflections on their experiences of agency for social justice. Through the lens of the capability approach, the findings illustrate the participant learning and agency journeys Youth undertook to seek a life they have reason to value. Findings indicate Youth of Color seek to learn what they find missing in formal education, both individually and collectively. It reveals the importance of collective Youth-led spaces that cultivate agency to pursue social justice for themselves and future generations. Exploring the alchemy of how Youth of Color transmute their experiences and learning to collectively develop agency for social justice has implications for adult allyship and formal education.

By incorporating these strategies into language teacher training programs, educators can create dynamic and engaging learning environments that promote active participation, critical thinking, and meaningful language acquisition
UTILIZATION OF EMPATHY AS A LEARNING TOOL AMONG EDUCATORS AT KATE BOND ELEMENTARY
This qualitative research study explores the opinions and experiences of a group of six educators at Kate Bond Elementary in Memphis, Tennessee. This research examines how these educators utilize empathy as a teaching tool, how they choose to implement social-emotional learning into their classrooms, and how their own educational histories impact their current teaching practices. Data collection spanned four weeks and consisted of six interviews. The findings suggest that empathy not only plays a role in education but is, for this group of educators, inseparable from the academic learning they facilitate in their classrooms. The educators interviewed in this study called attention to the ways in which they are able to turn a challenging moment into a teachable opportunity, spoke about the relationships both they and their students have with guidance staff at the school, and acknowledged the lasting impacts that social-emotional learning has had on their students. This research provides insight into how teacher-student relationships guide education and the importance of utilizing a social-emotional learning curriculum.

Applied Theatre for Peacebuilding: Exploring the Value of Embodied Practice
Arts, storytelling, theatre, and drama have been woven into strategic approaches to peacebuilding after conflict to engage with people’s experiences and emotions, share silenced stories, and build trust and empathy. Applied theatre challenges audience members to take a more active role, either through participating in the storytelling or acting itself or through dialogue and reflection activities. This collaborative art form has been used for community-building, reconciliation efforts as well as in post-conflict settings. This study examines the impact and value of an intensive applied theatre workshop, using participant-observation, and semi-structured interviews. Some of the qualitative findings include the value participants found in learning from an experienced practitioner, the surprising speed that relationships and a sense of safety was established through theatrical exercises and games, and the depth and vulnerability that was shared within the workshop despite the varied experiences participants brought. Additionally, this study found that there are consistencies between limited, small-scale applications as well as in larger international settings when considering the challenges and benefits of incorporating theatre into community-building and peacebuilding projects
