How to Decolonize a Classroom
This study is gathered from personal reflections of my time and experience with the Vermont Workers’ Center organization in Brattleboro Vermont USA. As a Community Organizer I highlight my internal and external work on projects specific to racial justice, and its use in organizing and educating members in the Southern Vermont region. The challenges as an active and involved community member of color, living and working in the context of a predominantly white setting has inspired me to curate a model and theory to “decolonize” or unlearn the prevalence of white supremacist culture in our educational spaces
The Future of Agriculture in Cameroon in the Age of Agricultural Biotechnology
The President of the Republic declares that the development of Cameroon depends on agriculture, the economic sector which currently generates 23% of gross domestic product and employs 62% of the population. Today, national strategy to bring about agricultural progress includes the experimentation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which Cameroon intends to commercialize in 2019. This paper examines the obstacles impeding agriculture today, while uncovering the current stage of experimentation and debate around GMOs. The study also evaluates the inclusion of stakeholders in the debate around the future of agriculture. Research was conducted through interviews of government officials, civil society organizations, academics, farmers, private enterprises and consumers. The study finds that the primary obstacles to agriculture are lack of financing, inadequate factors of production, and poor governance. Objections to GMO technology include risk to human health, loss of sovereignty in farming, and reduction in crop quality. The government refutes the concerns of the opposition and justifies GMO technology by the need for increased crop production in order to ensure food security. Finally, the study demonstrates that while certain stakeholders are consulted, the government alone decides the future of GMOs and agriculture in Cameroon.
Seagrass Community Change at Three High Risk Ports in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area from 2005 to 2014
Seagrass meadows are extremely valuable and dynamic ecosystems currently facing pressure from anthropogenic disturbances. Seagrass ecosystems are declining globally because of direct and indirect threats that shift environmental conditions controlling seagrass distribution. Seagrass species responses to disturbances vary based on a number of factors including life history strategy. The goal of this study was to map and analyze patterns of dominant seagrass species change at Cairns and Gladstone from 2005-2014 and Townsville from 2007-2014. This compilation data set was symbolized according to the life history strategy of the species. The major disturbances during this time period were physical damage from cyclones and the associated above average rainfall and river flow, which caused large losses in the percent of sites surveyed where seagrass was found. These disturbances shaped the successional patterns observed. Most of the enduring meadows in these ports were composed of the colonizing/opportunistic species, Z. capricorni and H. uninervis. Opportunistic and persistent species, such as C. serrulata and T. hemprichii, were both seen less frequently in these ports. The colonizing species, H. ovalis and H. decipiens, were frequently observed colonizing spaced cleared during disturbance. The patterns of succession observed around Cairns, Townsville, and Gladstone support the life-history classifications of the species
Inglés: Contextual Information: This investigation focuses on the use of therapy in young women in the city of Buenos Aires (CABA), Argentina. Argentina is the world’s leader for the amount of psychologists per habitants. CABA holds the largest concentration of psychologists in the country (Alonso y Klinar 2014). The use of therapy in Argentina is not exclusive to those who have a mental disorder. In the private sector, it is common for people to consult about questions about their lives. The population studied in this investigation was young women between the ages of 22 and 32 years of age. This period of time is often characterized as a period for exploration and self-reflection. Additionally, this age group constitutes the largest percentage of the population of women in CABA (National Census of Population and Housing 2010). However, there is little research into the use of psychological therapies and psychological therapies specifically used by this age group. The objectives of this research include: to investigate the demands and/or problems that prompt the need of psychological treatment in young women in CABA from the perspective of young women who live in the city and from the perspective of professional psychologists; to identify what type of therapeutic strategies are the most used, the power of election of the type of therapy that is available to women and the duration of therapy use; and to develop a possible hypothesis about the social, economic and cultural dimensions that are centered around young women who use psychological therapies. Methodology: Sixty-five women (! #= 28.48, Range: 23-32 years of age) took part in this investigation through a self-administered survey that was conducted through a virtual form. Five psychologists were interviewed and asked questions that related to their theoretical school of thought, the average duration of treatment, possible reasons for consultations and problems that may prompt young women to consult psychological therapies. Results and Conclusions: The main reasons for consultations included questions related to life development and family concerns. According to this sample, women most used therapy in private spaces and most were in the middle class. Psychoanalysis was the most popular and frequently used therapy strategy. Generally, psychological therapies were accepted and widely used throughout the lifespan by participants in this sample
Instead of Silence: Chinese Nicaraguans and the Formation of Identity across Two Cultures
This project studies the ways in which Chinese Nicaraguans have developed their identity while living in a country that is not their motherland. It investigates the divided history and experiences between the Chinese Nicaraguans that lived in the Atlantic coast and those that lived in the Pacific side. Also, it researches how the experiences of Taiwanese immigrants differed from those of the Chinese Nicaraguans who came from mainland China. By examining interviews done with Chinese Nicaraguans today, the essay will compile the long and unknown history of the Chinese Nicaraguans, as well as their many experiences of belonging and displacement in their chosen country. The project is interested in how the Chinese Nicaraguans maintain a connection to their homeland, and it will try to portray the history and the experiences of the Chinese Nicaraguans in the context of diasporic studies. Finally, the essay will try to use Grounded Theory to identify the unique aspects that make up the Chinese Nicaraguan identity.
International Service-Learning and Experiential Education: Reframing a Putney Student Travel Service-Learning Program in the Dominican Republic
This paper presents the rationale for and design of a curricular framework for Putney Student Travel’s community service programs. The design is situated as a four-week service-learning program for high school students based in the Dominican Republic. With the exception of region-specific content, the curricular model will be transferable to any of Putney Student Travel’s 13 service-learning programs. Best practices in experiential education indicate that critical reflective thought is the key to harnessing the transformative capacity of international service-learning programs (Bringle, 2010; Whitney & Clayton, 2010). Following Kolb’s (2008) model for experiential learning and Baxter Magolda’s (1999) Model of Epistemological Reflection, the curriculum presented in this paper is designed to facilitate continuous reflective processing throughout the program. The curriculum was developed to support the specific needs of emerging adult learners from pre-departure through the reentry process, and links directly with measurable program and participant outcomes. This program can be implemented in Summer 2017, and the intent is that the curriculum and outline for a community service leader handbook will provide inspiration for enhanced community service specific leader trainings and resources in the future
STEM 1+2+2 Program: A Proposal for Saudi Arabia Ministy of Higher Education and the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques Scholarship
The Saudi Arabian Scholarship has gone through many changes since its establishment in 2005 by King Abdullah. For many years it was called the King Abdullah Scholarship Program, KASP, and was administrated by the Ministry of High Education (MOHE). The scholarship was recently renamed in its 19th stage the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program. The program gives Saudi citizens complete scholarships to overseas universities for undergraduate and graduate degrees, starting with up to a half year of English as Second Language training. The scholarship includes a monthly stipend which is awarded to the students and their family, a full scholarship that covers all academic expenses, medical and dental coverage, complimentary round trip tickets for the students and their families to return to Saudi Arabia once a year, academic supervision, rewards for obtaining a high GPA, allowances for scientific materials, allowances for private tutor fees, and allowances for special needs.
STEM 1+2+2 Program is a redesign and rethinking of the program to assist with student success and applies Jack Mezirow’s, Transformative Learning Theory to the program. STEM 1+2+2 Program will provide scholarships to highly-talented Saudi students to complete undergraduate degrees at top-tier US universities in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM, field following building a strong foundation at a community college.
The Community College Consortium will administer the STEM 1+2+2 Scholarship program for new cohorts from 2007-2010 as a pilot program. The program will enable talented undergraduates Saudi Arabian students in science and technology globally to pursue entrance in a top university after they have built their skill in the classroom and outside the classroom at four community colleges that are part of Community College Consortium.
Program success is when these students are able to successfully complete their bachelor degrees in the STEM fields and take the skill they learned in the USA back to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The other success will be when these students are able to successfully able to get job in the STEM fields in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
This paper explores mental health in Bolivia and discusses how both ancestral beliefs and Catholicism shape a national view of health. The role of mental health in internal migration and tension between urban and rural lifestyles will also be taken into account. I draw from experiences in an alternative therapy center and a Catholic psychiatric hospital to communicate some ways that Western psychology is implemented and received in Bolivian society
