Populist radical right parties and the securitization of migration in France

    Get PDF
This research paper addresses the interrelationship between the securitization of migration and the influence of the French populist radical right party, Front National (FN), in promoting anti-migrant claims. By analysing how political actors have played a role in applying security terms to migration in Europe, the paper addresses the different types of socio-political factors that have influenced the anti-migrant sentiment in France. The paper also aims to summarize the role of the media in securitizing migration. Furthermore, the analysis continues with an exploration of French security policy with regard to migration to better understand how FN has benefitted from a public conceptual understanding of migration as a security threat. To develop a comprehensive analysis, this paper incorporates both traditional primary and secondary academic sources as well as field-based interactive research including four face-to-face, formal interviews with academic experts

    Get PDF
The aims of this pilot study were to research and analyze the availability of birth control and family planning resources among Syrian refugee women at a reproductive age. This study took place in the host community of Karak, Jordan. Syrian women are a vulnerable population based solely on their gender. But being refugee women makes them more vulnerable and sometimes, their needs do not get met. This study is important because it will look into reproductive health aspects for this vulnerable population to ensure that there is satisfaction among women about their own health. This cross-sectional study sought to answer questions of accessibility to birth control, availability of support surrounding family planning, and overall satisfaction among Syrian refugee women about their current reproductive health care, specifically regarding birth control and family planning. The questions were answered by surveying a convenience sample of 13 Syrian women and by interviewing five Syrian women. The survey findings concluded that although 71% of the women surveyed found their reproductive health care provider to be extremely or somewhat trustworthy, nearly 86% of those women said their health care provider did not initiated a conversation about birth control, causing a lack of awareness. In regards to support mechanisms, only 36% of women surveyed had attended an informal support group. Many women interviewed stated that birth control was harder to access in Jordan than in Syria due to lack of affordability and health insurance. Limitations include small sample size and short time frame, which calls for further study on this topic. Although limitations were in place, this study suggests that birth control be more prevalent and discussed more in reproductive health clinics while being made more affordable

Problemas con la producción de café en Los Yungas / Problems with coffee production in Los Yungas

    No full text
Bolivia has one of the best climates and altitudes for the production of coffee in the world but it only qualifies as the thirty-sixth producer worldwide with 89,000 sacks of coffee in the years 2015/2016.[1] There are many problems affecting the production of coffee in both the short and long term. The problems are complicated, but aren’t new and the community of coffee growers are introducing creative innovations to confront the problems and raise the level of production of coffee in Bolivia. In the long term, Bolivians are trying to elevate the profile of Bolivian coffee worldwide and also are confronting the problem that investment in coffee is a goal that needs many years to complete. In the short term, the members of Bolivian coffee production are fighting against a plague that is threating their coffee plants and rapidly converting coffee growers to coca growers. To better understand the problems, I studied a myriad of actors in Bolivian coffee and the study is divided in that way. For each problem I examined the actors most implicated in the creation of the problem or in the fight against the problem. Walking through the four problems I spoke with: private companies, including various coffee vendors, a company that produces coffee, and a micro-financing firm; organizations, including a coffee grower cooperative, the federation of associations of coffee growers in Los Yungas, and an organization of agronomist engineers; and members of the municipal government. The result is a short study about the questions and big problems that plague coffee production in Bolivia and an account of the ingenuity of the actors to confront and stop these problems

Nit Nitay Garabame: Analyzing Mental Illness and Art Therapy Within Dakar’s Atelier d’EX-PRESSION Artistique

    Get PDF
As mental health issues are usually given low priority in countries of sub-Saharan Africa, including Senegal, mental illness continues to be an emerging topic of discourse (Rand 2015). In Dakar, the practice of art therapy has been used for decades to provide those living with mental illness or going through trauma with a method for selfexpression when words fail to articulate their situations or mental states. Situated within Hôpital Fann’s psychiatric hospital, Clinique Moussa Diop, is an art therapy workshop known as l’Atelier d’EX-PRESSION Artistique1, which provides the space, structure, and material for persons with mental illness to work with the plastic arts. Thus, the purpose of this project is to determine how mental illness is conceptualized and perceived within Senegal, the role that Clinique Moussa Diop’s atelier plays in conceptualizing and perceiving mental illness, the functionality of art therapy within the Senegalese context, and the workshop’s efforts of reintegrating patients into society. Featuring participant observation, interviews, and secondary research, this paper contributes to the emerging discussion of mental illness in Senegal, showing that although there exists a generally negative stigmatization towards persons with mental disability, the art therapy atelier works to redefine the concept of mental illness, integrates culturally relevant aspects within the structure of the workshop in order to improve patient care, and ultimately provides a space conducive to healing the patient and reintegrating them into Senegalese society

Is Faith Truly the Reason for Our Security? A study on the extent to which Islam influences Jordanian National Security

    Get PDF
After witnessing years of coups, war, and overall civil unrest in the Middle East, it comes as no surprise that there are many competing explanations for why this is. Much to the disbelief of the researcher, the average American’s theory for this was that the heavy influence of Islamic teachings in lawmaking prevented the successful implementation of democratic processes and overall peace in the region. However, Jordan appears to have evaded all forms of chaos, and remain peaceful despite also being a Muslim country. Why? Has Jordan escaped turmoil because unlike its neighbors it does not use Islam in its policies, despite being around 95% Muslim? This research project is aimed at delving deeper into the role Islam has played in keeping Jordan safe, if any at all. In order to fully do this, the researcher broke national security down into three main areas: diplomacy, military, and economy. After doing this, the researcher conducted both interviews and questionnaires amongst prominent professionals and university students, respectively, to analyze Islam’s influence on these three areas. By the end of the research, the researcher concluded that Islamic teachings have a very insignificant part in policymaking and therefore has little influence in national security, perpetuating the idea that secularism may be the key to peace and security in the region. However, an increase in Islam’s use would not necessarily be detrimental to the nation, or its security

This study examined the opinions, perceptions, and knowledge of residents of Thulo Syafru, a small village in the buffer zone of Langtang National Park, Nepal, regarding conservation efforts spearheaded by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation and the World Wide Fund for Nature. 26 community members were interviewed along with key figures in community leadership and the two aforementioned organizations. Thulo Syafru is an essential location for red panda conservation, leading to many conservation efforts being focused in the area. Overall, people expressed very positive opinions regarding red pandas and their protection, positive attitudes about conservation, and appreciation of the World Wide Fund for Nature. Responses regarding the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation were mixed between appreciative thoughts and complaints regarding restriction of harvesting natural resources

Why Children, Adults and the Elderly are living on the streets in Moroccan cities and what Morocco is doing about it.

    Get PDF
The aim of this independent study project is to explore the determinants of homelessness in the cities of Morocco, more specifically in Rabat,Casablanca and Salé, and how Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) are working to eradicate this epidemic. Poverty, Dysfunctional Families, Mental Illness and Addiction can all be causes as well as results of homelessness; all of these factors have the potential of seriously affecting individuals throughout the entirety of their life. Children, Adults and the Elderly are all affected by poverty throughout Morocco yet street children and the rural impoverished are the populations of the homeless where most research predominately focuses. The prevalence of homeless individuals living on the streets of Moroccan cities is woefully high and NGO’s throughout the country seem to be the only organizations that are aiming at creating temporary homes for the homeless, hoping to eventually eliminate this epidemic amongst all age groups. Through interviews, observation, outside research and personal reflection, I, the learner, seek to better understand why individuals of all ages are living on the streets of affluent cities in Morocco as well as what three specific NGO’s are doing to help these individuals and hopefully eradicate this issue (Inshallah). I seek to also offer options that the average Moroccan in these communities can do to assist the homeless population and help reduce the amount of individuals living on the streets
