SILENT KILLERS: DIABETES AND THE ACTIVE IGNORANCE OF NONCOMMUNICABLE DISEASE IN BALI

    Get PDF
In this paper, I will explore the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and specifically diabetes in Bali. I will study the general publics’ awareness and behaviors about noncommunicable diseases, as well as the attitudes and behaviors of diabetic patients towards their own condition. Furthermore, I will explore the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of diabetes, as well as the impact of the Indonesian national healthcare reform of 2014 on these issues. My objectives in this study were to explore the perspectives of both patients and healthcare providers towards diabetes, and to compare and contrast these perspectives both against each other and against the assumptions I had made from my literature review going into the field. I found that they often challenged each other. More than anything, I found that healthcare in Bali is in a massive state of transition, from the introduction of the single state healthcare provider and increasing awareness about noncommunicable disease. Conflicting accounts from healthcare providers on the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for diabetes reflect both regional differences and the changes that have already begun in Balinese health. While old mindsets about resistance to seeking medical care and misunderstandings about the nature of chronic disease persist, even strongly in more rural regencies, providers are reporting increasingly earlier diagnosis, better adherence to medication, and fewer complications in patients with diabetes

Pearl Lagoon\u27s White Lobster: The Societal, Economic, Political and Autonomous Effects

    Get PDF
The Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua is home to the greatest number of impoverished individuals in the country. However, the people of Pearl Lagoon - a municipality in the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region - have found a way to escape their poor economic situations. Due to the municipality’s close proximity to drug routes utilized by Colombian cartels and to the country itself, community members have turned to the drug trade in hopes of pursuing financial secureness. With the introduction of the “white lobster” or cocaine packets, the community as a whole has transformed its social, economic, and political spheres. In addition, the area has been militarized by Nicaraguan officers, which may be seen a threat to the region’s already minimal autonomy

Student Teaching Cuenca: An Overseas Student Teaching Placement Program for Taylor University

    Get PDF
The ethnic demographic of the United States is becoming more diverse, while the teacher population remains largely homogeneous. The interplay between the shifting student population and the stagnant teacher population can result in frustrated teachers who do not understand their students’ needs and students who are not well taught nor well served. One of the ways to equip our teachers is to create opportunities in higher education teacher preparation programs to study or teach abroad. Based on theory, studies, and assessment of the current state of pre-service teacher education through interviews and literature review, Student Teaching Cuenca is designed to be a comprehensive and unique international student teaching experience for student teachers at Taylor University that will greatly and positively impact their future personal and professional lives. Through practical, cultural, and reflective components, it will provide student teachers with opportunities to develop cultural confidence and intercultural competence in order to be effective educators for all students

Values Driven Strategic Thinking and Planning in Federated Non-Profits

    Get PDF
This paper, as a reflective practice, will explore organizational models and frameworks commonly found in non-profit organizations, as per the Leading and Managing Social Sector Organizations course at SIT. This paper attempts to draw on my experiences at the national non-profit, Reading Partners, and coursework from SIT to suggest the best decision making models for a mission driven, non-profit organization. The findings and reflections largely surround the methodologies of strategic thinking and planning for large, complex, federated organizations. The paper first explains Reading Partners organizational structure, program model, and culture, as per the different organizational frames in Boleman and Deal in order to provide context to the reader. The paper goes on to highlight the author’s experiences and observed challenges and changes as a Program Manager at Reading Partners over the course of the last three years. At the end of these reflections I analyze the effect of strategic planning on these events and the national organization as well as the affiliated sub-regions. The question to be addressed in this capstone is, “Which decision-making model might best sustain a mission-driven, federated organization”? Over the course of the reflective practice period, the best answer comes from an analysis of strategic thinking and planning best-practices. In the analysis this paper will explore strategic thinking as a surrogate to decision-making models in organizations

How Empowerment Processes Manifest for Afghan Women with Different Levels of Education

    Get PDF
Afghanistan has undergone almost 40 years of war and instability and these different wars have had a huge impact on Afghan girls and women as each regime brought new rules for women’s opportunities, in particular, their access to education. This Independent Practitioner Inquiry Capstone (IPIC) paper explores the idea of female empowerment in the Afghanistan context in order to better understand the connection with education related to empowerment, education, gender, agency and mentorship. This small-scale qualitative study relies upon a combination of interviews and autoethnographical data and may provide additional insights into how education influences empowerment in the lives of Afghan women and girls. For the purpose of this study, five Afghan women have been interviewed who currently live in the U.S, but have lived most of their lives in Afghanistan. This study provides information about what Afghan women already know about women’s empowerment and how they can relate their education with the idea of empowerment. It will also bring out some suggestions from women about what needs to be done in order for them to feel empowered and supported in a country like Afghanistan, where women are continuously struggling to get educated and face different forms of violence. The study findings cover four major themes: the impact of war and gender on women, understanding empowerment, developing a sense of empowerment and agency, and education in relation to leadership and mentorship. Some of the major outcomes of this study is that Afghan women argue that education has a very important role in their lives in terms of empowerment, agency, and how they function in the society. In addition, the study also reveals that besides education, family’s support and having mentors who can really encourage women along their development may contribute significantly to feelings of greater empowerment

Connecting Study Abroad to Careers, Graduate School, and Fellowships: An Advising Program for Yale-NUS College

    Get PDF
A growing body of research affirms the positive impact of education abroad on career development, however, the value of this connection relies on students’ ability to intentionally “connect the dots” between study abroad and their bigger-picture academic and professional goals. Education abroad advisors, along with their counterparts in career services and other professionally-oriented advising, must consider how to help students identify transferable skills from study abroad and translate them for external audiences such as employers and graduate schools. The program proposed in this course-linked capstone is designed as a companion for semester-long mobility programs at Yale-NUS College. Informed by a survey of study abroad returnees and interviews with career services, graduate school, and fellowships advisors at Yale-NUS, the pilot program is structured in three phases: before, during, and after study abroad. Through in-person and web-based activities, it engages students in goal setting, observation and reflection, unpacking study abroad, and articulating their skills and experience to external stakeholders

Closing The Circle: Comprehensive Study Abroad Reentry Programming in a Small Liberal Arts College

    Get PDF
In an increasingly globalized world, study abroad is growing in popularity. As a rising number of students study, work, research or simply move abroad, research by experts and practitioners has been focused on finding ways to maximize learning. An effective and wildly popular strategy adopted by most institutions is pre-departure orientation. However its counterpart, study abroad reentry, while also potentially transformative, isn’t equally widespread. This paper describes an effort to fill this gap through the creation of a reentry program for Marlboro College, a small, liberal arts college in Marlboro, Vermont. In order to tailor the program to Marlboro students’ specific learning objectives and styles, preliminary research was conducted among students, faculty and staff members. The results highlighted the need for a reflection and discussion-based program offering ample opportunities for students to share their experiences and learn from each other. Consequently, the semester-long “Back On The Hill” program was created. The experiential learning model was chosen as a foundational framework to guide the design of Back On The Hill as an interdisciplinary, collaborative curriculum based on three main components: reflection on one’s own learning, contextualization of that learning and application of it. To effectively deliver these components, program sessions were chosen to be weekly and centered around activities ranging from open discussions to guest panels, student-led workshops and community-wide events. To ensure accessibility and feasibility, the program was designed to fit smoothly into Marlboro’s everyday activities. The practicality of the logistics, together with the curriculum chosen, were intentional and aimed at situating this program as a potential model for other small, liberal arts colleges to develop similar efforts towards implementing reentry programs

Ecuador as an Academic Destination: Building a National Strategy

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT The purpose of this capstone paper is to identify key stakeholders that can contribute to the design of a national strategy to increase academic mobility to Ecuador and, at the same time, support Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in their efforts to internationalize their campuses. The methodology to be used is a stakeholder analysis with a trans-disciplinary approach, which will identify key players from different institutions and disciplinary backgrounds. This International Education Policy Advocacy course-linked capstone proposes the establishment of a national council constituted of key stakeholders to work on a strategy, which should be closely connected with other national priority areas including economic development, tourism and trade
