    Get PDF
Objective: This paper reviews individual, familial, peer, and societal factors influencing adolescent depression in developed countries. Background: Depression usually onsets at adolescence and contributes to high DALYs. Since depression is treatable, efforts should be made to reduce its prevalence and effect. Methods: The research consisted of looking at literature relevant to the topic and age group and conducting interviews with experts who know about and have worked with adolescent depression. Discussion: Adolescents begins at the onset of puberty, allowing different biological factors such as genetics, stress of puberty, and cognitive changes to increase vulnerability to depression. Adolescents who had substance abuse problems and/or held stronger neuroticism personality trait were more susceptibility to depression. Unhealthy familial relations and peer relations was also linked to depression risk. Negative life event often predated depression onset. Living with a parent who had depression increased chances of depression for their offspring. The performance-driven society puts pressure on adolescents that when unable to cope or extrinsically motivated can increase risk of depression. There could be possible risks with social media in centralizing one depression definition, increasing comparing behaviors lowering self-esteem, and difficulty distinguishing true reality. Stigma and lack of adolescent-focused care can prevent adolescents from seeking and getting the help that they need. Conclusion: The paper looked at a few factors that influence depression. Different factors interact changing depression vulnerability. Possible next steps are looking at these factors and how to decrease the risk to improve adolescent depression prevalence

“We Are The Gap: Understanding the Inclusion of Immigrants in Moroccan Left-Wing Politics”

    Get PDF
This project seeks to understand to what extent immigrants are included in left-wing politics in Morocco. In 2011, King Mohammed VI named Morocco an executive constitutional monarchy. One can argue that this means Morocco is moving in the direction of democracy, but is democracy what left-wing political parties are truly advocating for? And if they are, does the left include marginalized people it advocates for? Particularly, how are immigrants fighting for their own rights in Morocco, and to what extent are Moroccan left-wing political parties centering and uplifting the voices of immigrants, if at all

The Revolution Conundrum in Cameroon: A study of Relative Peace Under President Biya\u27s Rule

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to answer the question: What are the factors that have contributed to relative peace in Cameroon under the rule of President Paul Biya up until the civil uprisings in the Anglophone regions in 2016? Cameroon has witnessed consistent civil unrest in the forms of protests and strikes and yet the political structure remains strong against all opposition. Within the limitations of the research, the study finds three main explanations: state terror tactics and divide and rule strategies have quelled opposition, the survival culture of the population has resulted in creative economic alternatives that subsidize civil disorder, and the cultural legacies of two colonial powers, the British and the French, influence different citizenship understandings and relationships to defiance. However, although the political situation has remained intact, the country is not unified in the slightest, and the effects of years of corruption, fraudulent elections, and consistent marginalization of Anglophones is taking its toll. The stability of the Biya regime is currently being put to the test in the Anglophone Northwest and Southwest regions. Although the relative peace of the nation is being questioned with this rising Anglophone civil war, this study foresees that the aforementioned factors that have prevented disintegration before will likely prevent a revolution from succeeding once again

This essay is part of a project that examines generation and motivational support student in re-entry schools in Santiago, Chile and Buenos Aires, Argentina. / Both Chile and Argentina have seen a large increase in private individuals freedom in the last decades. Without going to the issue of mass incarceration, the issue arises about life, rights, and the development of people in contexts of confinement, and mainly what does it mean for a State to have so many private people of freedom? Within this question, a more specific question arises about the ability to find and obtain a right to education in confinement contexts. The two countries have, as part of their national educational laws or other regulations, requirements or parameters for education in confinement contexts. The same In the meantime, the penitentiary system has its own character and culture. One can see how the dynamic where systems are condensed works: schools in contexts of confinement. Educational establishments inside institutions of incarceration They develop their activities in a field of permanent tensions (Blazich, 2007, p. 53). This study aims to know and understand these tensions. Through twelve interviews with teachers who work in these schools and time observing in an educational establishment in a penitentiary, the study has developed three branches of tensions. First, the goal tension-the goal of education. Second, the tensions of belonging-which system, which space, and which personal belong daily in the institution (s). Third, the most intimate tensions of the teacher- as he conceives the position and the justification of a right to education in contexts of confinement

Within the South African context, there exists an intimate relationship between religion and politics. South Africa by definition is a secular society however data indicates that the South African population that is overwhelmingly religious. According to a General Household Survey published in 2015, 86% of the South African population identifies with some form of the Christian faith (“General Household Survey,” 2015). Historically religious civil society has played a prominent role in shaping the political climate and the political involvement of South African citizens. During Apartheid, Christianity played an influential role in the ideological formation and justification of the Apartheid political system, while simultaneously serving as a primary source of strength for those involved in the struggle. This study uses in-depth, semi-structured, narrative interviews to construct an understanding of the ways that Christian civil society organizations and South Africans belonging to the Christian faith understand and engage in politics during and post-Apartheid

Correlations Between Reef Health and Vertical Zonation on Ushongo Village Reef and Fungu Zinga Reef

    Get PDF
While the existence of vertical zonation on coral reefs is well-known, the driving mechanisms and the influence each has is not clear. This study seeks to investigate the influence of reef health on vertical zonation. Reef health is used as a potential factor since it is essentially a broad description of reef diversity. Therefore, a healthy reef which is very diverse is likely to have more and different interspecies interactions than an unhealthy one. This project investigates whether these altered interactions results in different depth distributions of various coral types, categorized broadly by colony shape. Reef health did not seem to significantly affect depth distribution of coral types, although it did influence the species richness of branching and small dome-shaped corals in upper reef sections

“Sanarnos para sanar el mundo”: Un estudio de mujeres activistas contra el extractivismo y los poderes curativos de terapia social / Heal us to heal the world : A study of women activists against extractivism and healing powers of social therapy

In November, I worked with the GAMMA Foundation and I studied the link between ecofeminist activism and social therapy. The GAMMA Foundation offers social therapy workshops to women\u27s rights activists, many of whom fight against extractivism in their communities. There is a link between the issues of women\u27s rights and the exploitation of the environment, which is the basis of the ecofeminist theory. In practice, many of the women who attend these workshops are victims of both gender discrimination and also of public health problems and the social effects of pollution caused by extractivism. For many of these women, activism is not an option but a necessity, and although it can be very empowering, it also carries a heavy burden on emotional, physical and spiritual health. The goal of social therapy is to empower women to heal themselves to heal the world. Social therapy aims to provide women with the tools to take care of their mental health, eradicate stress in their personal lives in order to create solid and healthy organizations, and provide women with information to share with their communities. The research was conducted through interviews with members of the affected community and observation and participation focused on a social therapy workshop. In my independent project explore the specific case of women in activism and their testimonies in the province of Orellana, against the contamination caused by Texaco and the need and effect of social therapy in their lives and personal communities

¿Conservar o Consumir? The impact of Protected Natural Areas on Security and the Food Sovereignty of Indigenous People in Mother of God, Peru

By means of a comparative-ethnographic approach, this study examines how the creation of two Protected Natural Areas (ANPs), the Bahuaja Sonene National Park (PNBS) and the Tambopata National Reserve (RNTAMB), in the Peruvian Amazon have compromised the secure and sovereign food system of the native community of Infierno, or the Ese Eja people. The study primarily relies upon interviews with community members to examine the traditional food system before the creation of the two ANPs, in 1996 and 2000 respectively, in comparison to the present food system. The results affirm that, with the creation of the two ANPs, but most notably the RNTAMB, the community of Infierno lost their food security and sovereignty, mainly due to new restrictions and requirements to enter the protected areas. As a result, the cultural customs and daily diet have changed dramatically, resulting in an increase in diseases such as anemia and other diet-related illnesses. Although the existence of the ANPs limits the lives and traditional diet of the Ese Eja they are supportive of the environmental preservation, however, they define and view “conservation” in a less restrictive manner, according toindigenous sustainable-use practices. Finally, the community of Infierno, often seen as the ultimate example of sustainable development, is not adequately equipped with alternatives, such as agriculture, for sustaining themselves, further contributing to their insecurity and lack of food sovereignty
