Providing End-of-Life Counseling: A Narrative Inquiry
Get PDFThis qualitative study aimed to address the gap in the research related to end-of-life counseling by exploring the experiences of counselors working with clients at end of life. While counseling literature and education are lacking regarding end of life, many counselors will work alongside clients approaching death. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to better understand the nuanced experiences of counselors providing end-of-life counseling and (b) to explore the supports and preparations helpful for counselors to provide end-of-life counseling. A narrative approach, using the Listening Guide (Gilligan, 2015), was employed to analyze and present the stories of three counselors with experience providing end-of-life counseling. During the analyses, a pattern of perspective-taking in speech, termed “the voice of empathy,” was identified across all participants. Additionally, several areas of convergence (e.g., heaviness of the work, rewarding work) emerged. Findings generated relevant implications for the counseling field, including the need for enhancing death competency in counseling curriculum and supervision practices. Findings also highlighted the need for counseling advocacy, particularly regarding Medicare, to ensure that individuals at end of life have access to necessary mental health counseling
Albinism in \u3ci\u3eOlivierus martensii\u3c/i\u3e (Karsch, 1879) (Scorpiones: Buthidae)
Get PDFThis is a formal case report for the albinism in Olivierus martensii (Karsch, 1879). Albino phenotype is compared with its normal counterpart in terms of their morphology and behavior by cursory experiments. The examined 7 albino individuals (5 of which were adults) were smaller and more slender than their normal counterparts. However, these quantitative differences were not statistically significant and should be treated with caution due to the low sample size. Their abilities to detect both white light and UV light or UV-excited fluorescence were not significantly undermined, although their tendency to ensure a clear vision through self-cleaning behavior appeared to be reduced. Their heightened visibility on dark, leafmould substrate and greater crypticity on yellowish gravels may play a significant role in their natural survival. Additional evidence is required to substantiate this hypothesis as the function of scorpion coloration has been hardly studied. Several theoretical assumptions were proposed following a literature review on scorpion coloration and fluorescence, and this paper also serves as a brief synopsis of those aspects. Other three rare phenotypes in this species are also reported, defined here as piebaldism, hypomelanism and leucism. Given their existence, it is suggested that the loss of melanin in the epidermis beneath the ocelli is diagnostic for albinism in scorpions
Survival of regional theater in a post-COVID America
Get PDFThe purpose of the qualitative narrative study is to better understand the innovative strategies and programs used by regional theaters to bring their audiences and revenues back to pre-pandemic levels in a post-pandemic world. 11 current artistic leaders from across the United States were interviewed for this study using a semi-structured interview protocol. The leaders chosen for this study had been associated with a regional theater from the onset of the Covid-19 shutdowns through the various stages of re-opening thereafter. Nine themes emerged from the data: (1) Loyalty; (2) Financial Stability; (3) Adapting and Staying Relevant; (4) Navigating Obstacles; (5) Racial Reckoning; (6) Self-Care Paradigm Shift; (7) Optimism and Hope; (8) Audience Growth/Subscription Models; (9) Forward-Thinking Leadership/New Ideas. The findings support several recommendations for regional theaters looking to ensure their sustainability and survival including the creation of an endowment, the programming of aspirational seasons and the production of astonishing work, an update to or elimination of the subscription model, the creation of an optimistic and enthusiastic culture, the hiring of exceptional new leadership, and the exploration of partnerships with other arts organizations as well as the exploration of entrepreneurial opportunities and other non-traditional, outside-of-the-box thinking. Further research suggestions include conducting a case study of one theater to unlock a greater amount of data to be analyzed; exploring the current role of philanthropy in theater amongst younger generations; and researching the ways that a theater’s education program may help serve its mission as well as help its finance
Star-studded stingers: fluorescent sensilla on the scorpion aculeus (Arachnida: Scorpiones)
Get PDFThe aculeus of the scorpion telson was studied by UV fluorescence microscopy. Numerous brightly fluorescent punctae were observed on the non-fluorescent distal aculeus, including the tip region. The punctae were identified as aculear sensilla coeloconica (ASC), and were connected to fluorescent canals running through the cuticle. ASC were present in both sexes, and in adults and immatures as early as the second juvenile instar, but were absent from the first instar. The distal aculeus was found to be encased in a thick, non-fluorescent dark exocuticle (DX), covering an underlying thin, fluorescent hyaline exocuticle (HX). Fluorescent ASC were recorded from 183 species belonging to 97 genera in 19 families, encompassing all major scorpion lineages. The number of ASC in the tip region, the width of ASC canals, and the depth of the tip region, all exhibited positive correlation and allometric scaling with respect to carapace length. Higher tip densities of ASC occurred in some buthids, and in Scorpionoidea. The ASC are probably ubiquitous across the Order Scorpiones, playing an essential role in the sensory coordination of telson function during prey envenomation

The book shines light on the country that can no longer be found on a map; the country that did not allow its citizens to live and think freely. Yet, it always managed to heartlessly shatter people’s future.
