Introduction: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), now known as Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) by government authorities, is a severe postnatal withdrawal condition caused by opioid exposure during pregnancy. NAS is diagnosed every 25 minutes in the United States. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine was used to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) and NAS. The MOTHER trial found that utilizing buprenorphine to treat mother OUD during pregnancy led to significant decreases in LOS and length of therapy. Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a prenatal care program that integrates buprenorphine-based Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid-dependent pregnant women. Methodology: The study employs a qualitative literature review methodology, utilizing online library research databases, such as EBSCOhost, PubMed, CINAHL, ProQuest, and EDLINE. Google and Google Scholar are also utilized to explore government and private websites relevant to NAS and medication-assisted treatment. The search focuses on articles published in English from 2015 to 2024, which were selected for comprehensive review. Results: The study explored the efficacy of integrating buprenorphine-based Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in prenatal care for opioid-dependent pregnant women. Findings indicate significant reductions in the incidence of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) among newborns, coupled with decreased hospital length of stay (LOS) and overall treatment costs. Buprenorphine treatment also improved maternal health outcomes and higher treatment retention rates. Additionally, buprenorphine\u27s safety during breastfeeding contributed to reduced NAS severity and shorter hospital stays for neonates. These outcomes affirm the benefits of buprenorphine in prenatal MAT programs, underscoring its potential to enhance maternal and neonatal health while mitigating the financial burden on healthcare systems. Discussion/Conclusions: This study confirms the effectiveness of buprenorphine-based Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in prenatal care, significantly reducing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) among neonates from opioid-dependent mothers. Buprenorphine reduces hospital stays and treatment costs, offers clinical and economic benefits, and is safe and effective during breastfeeding, leading to milder NAS symptoms. These results highlight MAT\u27s potential to revolutionize prenatal care and address the opioid crisis\u27s public health impacts. However, it emphasizes the need for wider implementation and stronger policy support to ensure all affected pregnant women have access to these treatments. Continued research is needed to refine MAT protocols and understand long-term maternal and child outcomes. Integrating buprenorphine-based MAT in prenatal care is crucial for effectively managing opioid dependence during pregnancy, improving maternal health, and supporting broader public health efforts against the opioid epidemic

The benefits of medical Tetrahydrocannabinol on glaucoma

Introduction: This paper explores the potential therapeutic benefits of medical Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on glaucoma management, particularly in terms of intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction, ocular blood flow, and symptom management. Glaucoma, characterized by increased IOP and progressive optic nerve damage, is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. Current treatments focus on IOP control but may have inadequate efficacy or intolerable side effects, necessitating alternative approaches such as medical THC. Methods: The study hypothesis posited that medical THC could significantly reduce IOP, enhance ocular blood flow, and improve symptom management in glaucoma patients. To test this hypothesis, a literature review supplemented by a semi-structured interview with an experienced optometry practitioner was conducted. Research from 2015 to 2024 was reviewed using the PRISMA approach, analyzing findings from both primary and secondary sources. Results: Results indicated a reduction in IOP after THC administration, with studies reporting an approximate 25% decrease. Ocular blood flow was also positively affected, evidenced by increased vasodilation post-THC administration. Furthermore, patient-reported outcomes suggested improved pain management with THC use. Despite these promising findings, the effects were transient, and significant side effects, including hypotension and altered perception, were noted. Discussion: The interview reflected cautious optimism about THC\u27s potential, emphasizing the importance of further research given the lack of long-term data and concern over psychoactive side effects. Regulatory challenges due to THC\u27s Schedule I status also emerged as a significant barrier to both research and clinical use. The study\u27s limitations include its English language restriction, limited database usage, potential researcher and publication biases, and the absence of long-term outcome data. These factors may affect the generalizability of the findings. Practical implications suggest that while medical THC could be an adjunct therapy for glaucoma, careful patient selection, monitoring, and regulatory changes are imperative. The pharmaceutical development of cannabinoid-based treatments with minimal psychoactive effects could revolutionize glaucoma therapy. Conclusion: In conclusion, medical THC shows potential in managing glaucoma, but its integration into treatment protocols requires further extensive and controlled research. This study supports the hypothesis to a degree but acknowledges the need for additional investigations to fully validate the therapeutic role of medical THC in glaucoma management

Feasibility of Solar Farm Installation on MTR Sites

    No full text
Climate change is a major issue that has spread politically and has brought up debates on whether we should move on to more renewable sources of energy such as wind and solar. However, this move has historically been inhibited by the higher costs of these energy sources as well as the issue of finding suitable land to construct these wind and solar farms. In recent years, though, the costs of both of these renewable energy sources, especially solar have decreased significantly, making the construction of large scale solar farms more feasible as time goes on. Furthermore, here in the state of West Virginia, there exist tracts of land where there would be little conflict in constructing these farms: Mountaintop Removal (MTR) sites. Via using average solar irradiance data, we were able to calculate the total amount of energy produced by these hypothetical solar farms as well as the amount of money that would be made off of this electricity. By combining this with the calculated costs of installing these farms as well as the wages of the expected required workforce, we found that if the money is managed properly, this project of converting these MTR sites into solar farms is indeed a feasible business venture with profits in the hundreds of millions or billions of dollars depending on the project scale

Rage Against the Regime: A Comparison of Rock Nacional and Canto Nuevo

    No full text
The late half of the twentieth century saw unspeakable violence and repression in many countries throughout Latin America, as civil wars between communist leaders and American-backed insurgent armies of guerrillas gave way to brutal dictatorships in Chile and Argentina. One aspect that was vital to the resistance in both countries was music - rock nacional in Argentina and canto nuevo in Chile. While both styles of music contributed significantly to the resistance against the dictatorships in each of their respective countries, each genre contained different styles and presentation of lyrics. I will argue, using the musical analysis theory “The ‘Illusion of Life’ Rhetorical Perspective: an Integrated Approach to the Study of Music as Communication,” developed by Deanna Sellnow and Timothy Sellnow, that despite having different musical elements, the lyrical core of the most popular protest songs in Argentina and Chile contain the same elements and themes. It is this that created an emotional bond between the artists and the audience

    Racial Diversity in Healthcare Management

    No full text
Our society has become very diverse, which has led to a demand for it to be inclusive and embrace our diversity. Several organizations and industries, including the healthcare system, have focused on providing equal opportunities for everyone regardless of race, origin, economic status, sexual orientation, religion, etc. Although, the healthcare sector aims to provide equal opportunities, all too often it fails in this regard. As a part of the Hispanic community planning to go into healthcare administration with ambitions of achieving a CEO status, I have personal interest as to why there is such a small percentage of Hispanics holding executive positions in healthcare. In this paper I will unveil why executive roles are so limited for minority individuals, especially for Hispanics, and how they can obtain career success while making their way to executive positions in healthcare

    The False Prosperity Gospel

    No full text
The purpose of my research is to analyze the Biblical Gospel texts and use them to evaluate “Prosperity Gospel” writings and teachings. Through this analysis I hope to expose the flaws and intents behind the prosperity gospel as false in contrast to the Gospel it claims to follow. I believe there is evidence, when carefully and critically examined, that the prosperity gospel is using the biblical texts as a means to prey on the financially disadvantaged and spiritually weak. The end goal of my research, therefore, is to bring attention to the issue. In my research I will be conducting an analysis of the texts in the NIV Bible and be comparing it to various literature surrounding the prosperity gospel. I will be comparing the texts and exposing flaws and intentions within the prosperity teachings. I will also, outside of the texts, be briefly looking at outside factors and statistics that point to the falsehood and wrongdoing of the prosperity gospel. In this project I will not be using human subjects, so the risks are minimal to none. The potential benefits are the freeing of prosperity rhetoric for some of its current disciples. Given that this project is entirely based around textual and factual analysis, there will be no human subjects
