A Rhetorical Analysis on Dystopian Literature Post-Trump Election: How People Are Turning to Fiction to Understand Real Events and Why It Matters That We Listen
No full textThis paper was inspired by the popular dystopian novel 1984 written by George Orwell and the eerily similar events following the 2016 presidential election. To begin, I will briefly discuss dystopian characteristics and statistics, followed by a short synopsis of George Orwell’s 1984 and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
Both novels reflect real and terrifying conditions of the times in which they were written. Now, people feel this unnerving reality once again post-Trump election. By applying New Historicism to the two novels, this can show how the times in which the two texts were written, reflect real incidents the authors’ experienced during their own time. Although written in completely different decades well before our time, the two texts display evident parallels between events found in both texts to today’s recent or current events.
Numerous people have made these same parallels themselves and are concerned that we may be rushing towards our own dystopian future. This notion became more evident after President Trump was elected into office. Following the election, people have experienced political trauma in the Trump era and feel that the effects have a direct relationship to the dystopian-like experiences implemented by the president. To conclude, I will discuss why it matters that we listen to what dystopian literature asserts in order to avoid experiencing our own dystopian future
Mine Contaminate Concentrations in Southern West Virginia
No full textThe adaptation of surface mining in the southern West Virginia coal fields has resulted in an increase in pollution that results from the alkaline mine drainage being released from mining where the waste is deposited. The effects of contaminates being released into the local streams have a negative effect on the local macroinvertebrate population. When the water quality is low there is a decrease in biodiversity that results from multiple species being sensitive to the contaminates. This study was done to determine where the focus of contamination clean up and/or mine closures should occur within the southern coal fields of West Virginia. A Hot Spot Analysis use done to determine where there are clusters of the contaminates Manganese, Sulfate, Acidity and Aluminum from different water sample sites annually between the years of 2014 to 2019. While there is generally a shift from year to year for the hotspot clusters of all of these contaminates there is evidence that shows that the decontamination of the environment and potentially shutting down mines should be focused on central Kanawha, eastern Nicholas, central and southern Boone, and Greenbrier counties

After being captured by the Spanish and taken to France, Zilia is thrown into a completely new world, in which she is forced to learn how to live as a woman in 18th century France. As she learns, she continuously critiques French society, especially woman’s place in it, and seeks to understand the cause of woman’s inequality. Using Lettres d’une Péruvienne and other primary and secondary sources, I will be assessing the effects of religion, education, and marriage on the 18th century French woman

The Dying Mall
No full textWhile American malls all around us are becoming dying malls or thriving successfully, I have narrowed my research down to three key areas for the people of West Virginia. We look at the Huntington Mall, the Charleston Town Center Mall, and Pullman square to see how they stack against each other and against previous research with other American Malls. We take a look at how businesses around them shape their success, as well as how they shape their own success within their space. Finally, who is considered to be a dying or dead retail space. The data suggests that the Huntington mall is a more sustaining retail area than the Charleston Mall and that Pullman Square is a more thriving area than the Charleston Mall
Japan’s Acceptance of Labor Migrants: Dissonance Between Government Policy and Foreign Workers’ Experiences
No full textWhat are the shortcomings of current government policies regarding incoming transnational labor, and why have these government policies developed in a way that is insufficient for supporting immigrant workers? Through the comparison of currently enacted government policies and the experience of foreign workers in Japan, the author attempts to investigate the disposition of government policies towards implementing foreign labor and the policies’ insufficiencies for supporting this labor. In the current Japanese government, the implementation of immigrant labor is a common subject. On the contrary, comparison of government policy and immigrant workers’ experiences shows a tone-deafness of the Japanese government’s attitude towards migrant workers

There is minimum risk with this study. The potential benefits of the study are gaining more understanding concerning discrimination in the workplace.
Complete Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria (may be submitted separately if extensive):
Participants who identify as LGB and have a bipolar disorder diagnosis will be recruited for participation in this study. Only persons eighteen and older will be considered for the study

Get PDFA new record of an adult female of Parabuthus eritreaensis Kovařík, 2003 in Somaliland confirms true distribution of this species, already discussed in Kovařík et al. (2016: 19–21). Three new species are described from Somaliland, P. dorisae sp. n., P. evae sp. n., and P. quincyae sp. n.. The hemispermatophore of P. dorisae sp. n. is illustrated and described. In addition to the analyses of external morphology and hemispermatophore, we have provided descriptions of the karyotypes of P. dorisae sp. n. and P. quincyae sp. n. Despite the presence of multivalents (CVIII and CXIV), both species exhibit karyotypes with 2n=16 and chromosomes that gradually decrease in length, with the exception of the first chromosome, which is longer than the following chromosomes. A map of distribution of Parabuthus species in the Horn of Africa is included
