Atypical presentation of Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma with metastasis to breast tissue

Malignant neoplasms of the lung commonly metastasize to lymph nodes, bone, brain, and liver via hematogenous and lymphatic routes. Much less commonly, metastasis occurs in the breast. Secondary metastatic disease of the breast is very rare, with a reported incidence ranging from 0.4-1.3%—with primary lung cancer being one of the most anomalous sources. This case details non-small cell lung cancer metastasis to the breast with proven primary contralateral lung origination. This atypical finding prompts medical professionals to consider these malignant cells\u27 immunologic, histologic, and pathologic makeup to understand further and treat the neoplasm

Successful flexible bronchoscopic extraction of a dental foreign body aspirated into the left mainstem bronchus

Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a potentially life-threatening emergency that commonly occurs in children but varies widely in clinical presentation. Rapid diagnosis and intervention are of the utmost importance to prevent complications such as airway obstruction, infection, and lung injury. While uncommon in adults, most encountered causes occur in the setting of intoxication, neuromuscular weakness, or iatrogenic dental work. Those with dental prostheses are especially susceptible due to the partially attached nature, rendering the risk of accidental dislodgement. This report discusses an uncommon case wherein an 82-year-old male aspirated a dental bridge into his left mainstem bronchus during routine dental treatment. Flexible bronchoscopy with a urology basket had to be employed for successful removal. The choice of extraction technique via flexible or rigid bronchoscopy largely depends on the specific features and location of the foreign body; however, there is much debate about whether specific criteria warrant one over the other or if flexible should always be the first line. Preventive measures, including rubber dams, should be utilized to minimize the risk of aspiration during dental procedures, as the downstream effects can be deleterious. Despite the uncommon clinical occurrence of an adult aspirating a dental foreign body, this case report emphasizes the clinical importance of primary prevention to avoid similar occurrences

This is an interview about Reiki and its connection with overall well-being with a Reiki Practitioner holding ~one year of Reiki experience (Latin American; Female; England, United Kingdom). She was interviewed on May 7, 2025. The participant agreed to the terms outlined in the verbal informed consent form before this interview. Some of the broad conversations within this interview include the more widespread use of Reiki in scientific practices, the participant\u27s experience with a group engaging in multiple healing modalities, Reiki\u27s ability to create more balance and compassion, and her early years with her parents and their religious and spiritual experiences. Lindsey Harper was the interviewer and the primary investigator for this project. Ransomware in Healthcare: Threats, Impacts, and Mitigation Strategies

Excerpt: The growing digitalization of healthcare has exposed hospitals to significant cybersecurity threats, particularly ransomware attacks. The Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center (HC3) reported that as of mid-2024, there were 730 cyber-attacks worldwide against healthcare institutions, with 530 targeting the U.S. (AHA, 2024). Half of these incidents involved ransomware, a type of malware that restricts access to critical data until a ransom is paid (HHS, 2021). Hospitals are attractive targets for cybercriminals due to their essential role in patient care. Cybercriminals exploit vulnerabilities in hospital networks, often causing severe operational and financial damage. Factors such as understaffed IT teams, outdated security infrastructure, and the necessity of immediate patient care contribute to healthcare’s susceptibility to these attacks. This paper examines the extent to which ransomware attacks have impacted healthcare facilities, including financial repercussions, patient safety risks, and operational disruptions

Use of naltrexone for treating binge eating and food obsession related to trauma: a case report and literature review

    No full text
Impulse-control disorders, including those related to eating behaviors, are complex conditions with limited pharmacologic treatment options. While naltrexone is primarily used for opioid and alcohol dependence, emerging research suggests it may also be effective in managing a variety of impulse-driven conditions. As a pure opioid antagonist, naltrexone’s mechanism of action involves the inhibition of opioid receptors on dopaminergic neurons involved in the reward pathway of the brain, thereby reducing the reinforcing effects of substances such as alcohol and opioids. Research suggests that through this mechanism of action, naltrexone shows promise in treating impulsive behaviors also driven by the reward pathway, such as binge eating, purging, gambling, kleptomania, and self-injurious behavior, as well as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability. This case presents a 28-year-old female with a history of intellectual disability, ASD, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who displayed binge eating, hoarding, and aggression related to food following years of food restriction and trauma. After the failure of other medications, naltrexone was prescribed and showed a marked reduction in these behaviors. This case highlights naltrexone’s efficacy in treating trauma-associated binge eating and its broader potential in managing impulsivity-related disorders. Ultimately, further research is still needed to determine the proper dosages and duration of treatment and what conditions best indicate the use of naltrexone instead of alternative forms of treatment

Confronting the Mental Health Crisis: Structural Inequities, Market Pressures, and the Role of Pharmacy Solutions

    No full text
The mental health crisis in the US is severe, with depression and anxiety leading causes of disability among young adults. The mental health services market is growing, but access to care remains inconsistent, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Pharmacists are playing a crucial role in mental health care, improving medication adherence and patient outcomes through collaborative practice agreements. Systemic reform is needed to address barriers such as affordability and social determinants, with pharmacists integral to closing care gaps

Three new species of \u3ci\u3eAndroctonus\u3c/i\u3e from Morocco (Arachnida: Scorpiones: Buthidae)

New data are presented on the taxonomy and distribution of the dark species of the genus Androctonus Ehrenberg, 1828 in Morocco and Western Sahara. Three new species, A. argoubi sp. n., A. stockmanni sp. n., and A. vaneki sp. n. from Morocco are described, characterized by having metasoma I–IV ventrally punctate, a character that is well developed in A. stockmanni sp. n., and A. vaneki sp. n., and weakly developed in A. argoubi sp. n. Dark species from Morocco are compared with A. sergenti Vachon, 1948, and A. bourdoni Vachon, 1948. We describe and compare their external morphology, illustrating their characters comprehensively in color photographs. The hemispermatophores of two species are described and illustrated, and a map showing the distributions of the studied species is provided. Furthermore, for all three newly described species, we provided their karyograms, which are very similar (2n = 24) and demonstrate the karyotypic uniformity of the entire genus Androctonus

Investigating drivers in phytoplankton between lentic and lotic ecosystems within Twelvepole Creek watershed

    No full text
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) threaten aquatic ecosystems, local economies, and water quality. While extensively studied in lakes (lentic systems), their impact on flowing waters (lotic systems) remains underexplored. This study examined algal drivers in both ecosystems within the same watershed, focusing on Beech Fork Lake (lentic) and Twelve Pole Creek (lotic). Key environmental factors, including pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient levels, were measured using in situ sensors and laboratory analysis. Water samples were analyzed for nitrogen, phosphorus, and algal biomass for comparison to environmental conditions. Phytoplankton was preserved for identification in future research. By comparing these environments, this study aims to bridge the research gap on HABs in lotic systems, providing insights into bloom dynamics and mitigation strategies. Findings will contribute to improved water management and a deeper understanding of how geographic and ecological factors drive algal communities
