Numerical design, fabrication, and characterization of porous tissue scaffolds for bone regeneration
With the recent advancements within biomedical engineering of bone tissue scaffolds, there is still a need to develop mechanically robust and biocompatible with low immunogenicity for bone regeneration. Additionally, the evaluation of the fluid dynamics of the porous Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS) bone scaffold also shows the need for investigation due to the complex fluid interaction of hemodynamics that occurs with the scaffold internal and external domains. To aid in the development of treating bone fractures, defects, and diseases. Furthermore, with the induction of a wide variety of TPMS architecture that yields different topologies, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model will aid in predicting the TPMS scaffold characteristic to help develop critical design parameters. Thus, this research has observed biocompatible and mechanically strong materials with bone regeneration applications by evaluating polyamide, polyolefin, and cellulose fibers (PAPC) and SimuBone biomaterial. The TPMS scaffolds are fabricated by fused deposition modeling (FDM) additive manufacturing. Furthermore, the evaluation of fluid dynamics of internal and external effects using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is used to observe the fluid interaction of the TPMS scaffold. Therefore, ANSYS (Fluent with Fluent Meshing) software captures the pressure, wall shear stress, and velocity streamline characteristics. As for the bone scaffold topology prediction, machine learning CNN is used and developed within Python to observe these properties. Accuracy, loss, validation accuracy, validation loss, and FScore will be recorded to aid in developing the hyperparameters with the CNN platform. Therefore, the findings show that PAPC compression modulus performance observed that Neovius and Schwarz-Diamond designs have higher levels of compression strength than that of Schwarz-Primitive and Schwarz-Gyroid designs. As for SimuBone biomaterial, it was observed to be a suitable bone tissue engineering material due to its robust mechanical performance. Additionally, it is observed that the vertical orientations of P.W. Hybrid showed optimal performance with the compression analysis out of 10 different TPMS designs. It also has suitable mechanical mimicry of human trabecular bone yield strength. The evaluation of the CFD analysis of the internal and external performance of 10 TPMS scaffold designs showed that Schwarz Primitive yielded superior fluid properties. The wall shear stress was the lowest for analysis, with the external cubic evaluation showing Schwarz Primitive has a wall shear stress value of 3.4 mPa. In addition, its fluid pressure performance was suitable for improving cell viability and survival. Furthermore, the CNN evaluations displayed the optima hyperparameter for batch size, convolutional layers, dense layers, layer size, and Epoch training as 16, 6, 3, 32, and 25, respectively. A trend can be discerned within accuracy, loss, validation accuracy, validation loss, and F-Score performance, all yielding improved and consistent performance with the 5- replication analysis. Thus, this research has observed the fluid dynamics, mechanical performance, and topology evaluation of the TPMS bone scaffold. This study will aid in designing and experimenting with bone tissue engineering scaffold development
Musical Hallucinations in an Elderly Female With Hearing Loss
Musical hallucinations (MH) are rare auditory phenomena in which patients perceive music without a known source. Risk factors for MH include hearing loss, older age, female gender, epilepsy, and certain medications. This case report details the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of an 82-year-old woman who developed MH following the onset of hearing loss. Despite treatment attempts with gabapentin, quetiapine, and donepezil, the symptoms persisted, demonstrating the difficulty in treating this condition
Strategies for Integrating Aging and Older Adulthood into Counselor Training
Following recent changes to Medicare mental health law, counselors will have expanded opportunities to work with older adults. Historically, there has been a dearth of counselor training dedicated to counseling older adults, necessitating greater attention to understanding and applying best practices for preparing counselors to serve older adult clients. Looking to professions that have a longer history of serving older adults, specifically gerontology, social work, and geropsychology, we describe approaches to training counselors to work with older adults that may prove helpful for the counseling profession
On the transmuted distributions; properties and application
The transmuted distributions first appeared in (2007) after Shaw and Buckley constructed a quadratic rank transmutation map (QRTM), G(u) = (1 + λ)u − λu2, as a transformation of a cumulative distribution function of a random variable X, to generate the transmuted-X distribution. In (2017), Jayakumar & Babu defined the T -transmuted-X family of distributions by incorporating a transmuted-X into a transformer-transformed class of distributions (Aljarrah et al., 2014). This thesis surveys the main properties of the transmuted-X distribution, such as density shapes, moments, and entropy. Detailed attention will be given to existing members of the transmuted-X family of distributions, such as the transmuted-Weibull (Aryal & Tsokos, 2011) and the transmuted-exponentiated Gumbel (Deka et al., 2017). A new member of the T -transmuted-X, namely the Gumbel-Transmuted-Weibull, is presented and statistical properties of the new distribution are investigated. Real data from literature is used in application of the proposed distribution, in comparison with other existing distributions in literature

New information about taxonomy and distribution of the genus Neobuthus Hirst, 1911 is presented, based on material recently collected in Somaliland. Four new species are described, N. dhobo sp. n., N. opatovae sp. n., N. osoli sp. n., and N. verae sp. n. (Somaliland). An updated distribution map of the genus Neobuthus is provided

Evaluating Fine Tuned Deep Learning Models for Real-Time Earthquake Damage Assessment with Drone-Based Images
Earthquakes pose a significant threat to life and property worldwide. Rapid and accurate assessment of earthquake damage is crucial for effective disaster response efforts. This study investigates the feasibility of employing deep learning models for damage detection using drone imagery. We explore the adaptation of models like VGG16 for object detection through transfer learning and compare their performance to established object detection architectures like YOLOv8 (You Only Look Once) and Detectron2. Our evaluation, based on various metrics including mAP, mAP50, and recall, demonstrates the superior performance of YOLOv8 in detecting damaged buildings within drone imagery, particularly for cases with moderate bounding box overlap. This finding suggests its potential suitability for real-world applications due to the balance between accuracy and efficiency. Furthermore, to enhance real-world feasibility, we explore two strategies for enabling the simultaneous operation of multiple deep learning models for video processing: frame splitting and threading. In addition, we optimize model size and computational complexity to facilitate real-time processing on resource-constrained platforms, such as drones. This work contributes to the feld of earthquake damage detection by (1) demonstrating the efectiveness of deep learning models, including adapted architectures, for damage detection from drone imagery, (2) highlighting the importance of evaluation metrics like mAP50 for tasks with moderate bounding box overlap requirements, and (3) proposing methods for ensemble model processing and model optimization to enhance real-world feasibility. The potential for real-time damage assessment using drone-based deep learning models offers significant advantages for disaster response by enabling rapid information gathering to support resource allocation, rescue efforts, and recovery operations in the aftermath of earthquakes
0887: Gwenyth E. Hood Collection, 1889-2023
Gwenyth Elise Hood was born on December 10, 1955, to Thomas Arthur Hood and Marion Louise Snee Hood in White Plains, NY, but moved with her family to Brandon, Vermont at the age of seven. She developed a love of reading and writing at an early age, discovering some favorite authors—Rudyard Kipling, Shakespeare, and J.R.R. Tolkien—at roughly the same time, in early adolescence. Then came Dante. Dante drew her to learn Latin and Italian; she had already started on French due to family heritage and the availability of the language in High School. In 1979 she won a University of Michigan Major Hopwood Prize for a (still unpublished) historical novel, Fior del Verde, set in Medieval Italy. (The title comes from Canto 3 of Dante’s Purgatorio.) In 1982, her first novel, The Coming of the Demons, described by the publisher (William Morrow) as “Historical Science Fantasy” was published. She was a member of the governing board (or Council of Stewards) of the Mythopoeic Society from 1997- 2019, and edited their annual literary magazine, The Mythic Circle, during this time.
At Marshall University, where Gwenyth Hood had been since 1989 (after a previous one-year position from 1985-86), she had taught English courses in Composition, Creative Writing, Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Medieval Literature, as well as interdisciplinary Honors courses in “Literature of Plagues and Epidemics” and “Doctors and Patients in Literature.” She regarded scholarship and creative writing as different ways of exploring the complex reality we all face, and continued work on scholarly and creative projects which interact in surprising ways well into her retirement.
This collection consists of 16 boxes, 292 folders, and 109 individualized items all relating to the work, education, carrier, research, and accomplishments of Dr. Gwenyth E. Hood. While a majority of the collection includes documents and items from Dr. Hood’s time at Marshall (1989-2023), a few specific items fall outside this time frame but are still related to Dr. Hood’s work and research
Catastrophe of War
The paper selects the novel Palpasa Café (2005) by Nepali author Narayan Wagle to highlight the factors that contributed to the Maoist insurgency and counter-insurgency that punctured the Nepali consciousness. It will also critique Eurocentric trauma theory for diminishing the South Asian perspectives of trauma (incidents) from the main discourse of trauma theory. In addition, the paper will explore the detrimental impacts of war and conflict as experienced by Nepalese cops and civilians together, and its long-lasting imprint on their psyche as manifested in different forms of trauma in the text. The dissemination of the \u27inarticulable trauma\u27 concept into something comprehensible and representable is promulgated by Wagle in the Nepali context. Nepal has experienced extensive exposure to militarised warfare, bloodshed, conflict of power, and environmental catastrophe in the myriads of forms that engender the rise of literature on trauma. It has witnessed the repugnance of a long-decade-continued Civil War (1996-2006) between Maoists and the Monarch which wreaked havoc on the country and its people
