БАДХЫЗСКИЕ АРХИВЫ. Том 2
Gorelova, RI, Fet V, editors. The Badkhyz Archives, Vol. 2. Huntington, WV: Marshall University Libraries; 2025. 387 p.
This book represents the second volume of the series started in 2021. It compiles memoirs and research information about the unique Badkhyz Natural Reserve, now in Turkmenistan, formerly at the southernmost point of the USSR. Established in 1941, the Reserve—nicknamed a Serengeti of Central Asia— housed many unique and endangered species, with an iconic wild ass, or kulan, preserved only there. The second volume includes unique and otherwise unavailable information about the workers of the Reserve in 1940s-1980s. We continuento publish information about, Yuri Gorelov (1931—2018), an extraordinary naturalist who worked in Badkhyz in 1956—1978. This volume also includes biographic materials about Gorelov’s mentor, another remarkable naturalist Vladimir Martino (1889—1961). The book is intended for everyone who is interested in history of science and conservation in Central Asia, the USSR, and Eastern Europe.
Smart Radiology: Using Artificial Intelligence for Better Imaging Outcomes
We hypothesize that the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in radiology improves the quality of care by increasing diagnostic accuracy, reducing interpretation time, and enhancing clinical workflow efficiency by minimizing imaging acquisition errors
Appalachian Archipelagos: writing from measureless location” in C.S. Giscombe’s Geopoetics
This essay begins with a speculative gesture: what if we read Appalachia not as a bounded, landlocked region, but as an archipelago—where coherence lies not in contiguity, but in multiplicity and geopoetic drift? Drawing on the poetry of C.S. Giscombe, which spans the Caribbean to Appalachia and unsettles geographic conventions by inhabiting “measureless location” – not as a metaphor but as a method, materially grounded yet elusively meaningful – and guided by R.A. Judy’s Sentient Flesh and its theory and practice of para-semiosis and poiesis-in-black, this essay follows Giscombe’s pragmatic and prismatic geopoetics as it upends dominant frameworks of lyric subjectivity and narrativized identity in tension with planetary theory. This essay first situates his most recent book, Negro Mountain, within his larger body of work as well as broader debates in geopoetics, environmental humanities, and Black study, while attending to the poetic, historical, and political implications of thinking Appalachia-as-archipelago. By examining Negro Mountain’s intertwined registers of geography, dream, and diaspora, while remaining skeptical of their academic commodification, this essay argues for the enduring value of poetry/poetics as epistemic intervention and insurgent knowledge—troubling not only dominant lyric poetry norms, but epistemic forms in the humanities and social sciences such as the monograph, map, and archive, in turn challenging dominant modes of knowledge production that reduce cultural knowledge to data or territory. In its disruption of individuated enclosure, geopoetics as poiesis-in-black tries to inhabit and theorize the planetary from beside and below, in addition to above and across. The essay and Giscombe’s poetry, invites a rethinking of place, voice, and value—rendering Appalachia not as a place to be named, but as topoi-in-motion, a poetics for living-in-common otherwise
Shame and shame resilience among students in an alternative suspension program
This explanatory sequential mixed methods study investigated the impact of an alternative suspension academic recovery program on shame and shame resilience among academically suspended college students. Grounded in shame resilience theory, the study examined changes in shame, specifically avoidance behavior, negative self-perception, and overall feelings of shame, and in shame resilience, including critical awareness, recognition of shame, the ability to verbalize shame, help-seeking behaviors, and total shame resilience. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-program surveys using the Test of Self-Conscious Affect-4 (TOSCA-4) and a researcher-developed Shame Resilience Scale. Qualitative data were then gathered through postintervention focus groups to contextualize the quantitative findings.
The results revealed statistically significant reductions across all measured dimensions of shame and significant improvements in all facets of shame resilience. Subgroup analyses showed that older students, in-person learners, non-first-generation students, and female participants experienced the most substantial gains. While younger, online, first-generation, and male students also exhibited gains, their outcomes were more variable and often not statistically significant, indicating a need for tailored support. Qualitative data offered further insight into these trends, highlighting enhanced self-awareness, reduced isolation, and greater willingness to seek support. Program components identified as particularly effective included individualized staff meetings, guest speaker engagement, and practical assignments.
This study contributes to the limited literature on noncognitive outcomes in academic recovery programs, emphasizing the importance of addressing shame as a barrier to student persistence and success. Practical implications include implementing shame-informed interventions, expanding access to holistic support services, and refining curricula that promote emotional resilience. Future research should include longitudinal studies to examine the sustainability of shame resilience, broader sampling to enhance generalizability, targeted exploration of subgroup differences, and further validation of the Shame Resilience Scale. Additionally, future studies should investigate the effectiveness of specific program components and delivery formats, especially in online settings, and explore how continued support beyond the program may sustain or amplify gains
A numerical method for coefficient reconstruction of a periodic inverse source problem
This thesis investigates a numerical method for solving the periodic inverse source problem governed by the Helmholtz equation. The problem involves reconstructing an unknown periodic source term from boundary measurements, which is inherently ill-posed. To address this challenge, we employ a quasi-reversibility method (QRM) combined with a basis function expansion to stabilize the inverse reconstruction. The forward problem is solved using the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, discretized via the trapezoidal rule, and the inverse problem is formulated as a constrained least-squares minimization. The discretized system is efficiently solved using sparse matrix techniques and regularization strategies. Numerical experiments demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method under various noise levels and different source configurations, including elliptical, sinusoidal, and bar-shaped sources. The results highlight the effectiveness of the approach in reconstructing periodic sources while mitigating the effects of measurement noise and numerical instability. Future work will focus on refining regularization techniques and extending the method to more complex periodic structures
“True Disciple”: Minister Louis Farrakhan\u27s Eulogy of Pastor Clay Evans and the Emergence of the Son of Abraham Rhetoric
In this essay, I examine Louis Farrakhan\u27s eulogy for Pastor Clay Evans on December 7, 2019. Drawing from the work of Andre E. Johnson, the eulogy is an example of prophetic rhetoric that showcases the powerful emotional and spiritual connection that aligns with the tradition of prophetic speech. I argue, however, that Farrakhan, in producing this rhetoric, adopted a prophetic persona I call “Son of Abraham”– an African American prophetic rhetoric that is firmly grounded in the sacred teachings, beliefs, and subscriptions of one of the Abrahamic religions, that contains a bold truth of love and healing, that when intentionally spoken has the power to transcend, resonate, impact, and provide hope for persons and audiences of other Abrahamic faith systems and non-religious communities as well
