    Bad Ideas About Writing

    No full text
We intend this work to be less a bestiary of bad ideas about writing than an effort to name bad ideas and suggest better ones. Some of those bad ideas are quite old/ such as the archetype of the inspired genius author/ the five-paragraph essay/ or the abuse of adjunct writing teachers. Others are much newer/ such as computerized essay scoring or gamification. Some ideas/ such as the supposed demise of literacy brought on by texting/ are newer bad ideas but are really instances of older bad ideas about literacy always being in a cycle of decline. Yet the same core questions such as what is good writing/ what makes a good writer/ how should writing be assessed/ and the like persist across contexts/ technologies/ and eras. The project has its genesis in frustration/ but what emerges is hope: hope for leaving aside bad ideas and thinking about writing in more productive/ inclusive/ and useful ways.https://mds.marshall.edu/oa-textbooks/1684/thumbnail.jp

Classical Sociological Theory and Foundations of American Sociology

    No full text
There are a few major themes that come up over and over again during the course of classical sociological theory’s development. All three classical theorists were writing at a time when sociology was a new and emerging discipline. This new discipline was called forth by momentous social changes taking place in European (and American) society during this time period. These changes were related to the rise of capitalism/ industrialization/ and new political representation for the majority of people (or/ at least/ a desire for such by many). Calls for socialism emerged as a response to recognition of new social divisions. Each of the three theorists you will read here weighed in on these historical changes/ theorizing the contours and dynamics of this new “modern” society.https://mds.marshall.edu/oa-textbooks/1741/thumbnail.jp

Financial Management for Small Businesses: Financial Statements & Present Value Models

    No full text
This book is for those whose financial management focus is on small businesses. For you/ we adapt the traditional financial management themes emphasized in corporate financial management courses to meet the needs of small businesses. Many financial managers of small businesses come from farms or agribusinesses. Others are interested in working for or starting businesses in the food or retail sectors. In most cases/ these businesses aren’t organized as C-corporations impacting things like taxes/ depreciation/ and legal requirements around compiling and reporting financial data. They are rarely publicly traded which creates unique constraints to raising debt and equity capital and calculating required risk-adjusted returns.https://mds.marshall.edu/oa-textbooks/1780/thumbnail.jp

Translator or Cultural Mediator?: The Localization of Video Games from Japan to North America

    No full text
By observing video game localization—the process of transforming a game for global releases while taking into consideration the target audience\u27s culture—this paper aims to question the role of localization when translating what Western audiences may perceive as controversial and potentially harmful content. Using Persona 5 Royal and Catherine: Full Body—two games created by the Japanese company Atlus—as case studies, this paper will explain how the North American localization teams dealt with such content. I will also discuss the implications of the changes that were or were not made in the North American releases of these games. This serves to demonstrate a pertinent issue that localizers, as translators, must address. Is it more important to appease consumers at the expense of providing a genuine depiction of the game\u27s content? Or should localization be a faithful reflection of the source content, regardless of the potential consequences it may have? This paper will be addressing this ethical quandary

Snap and Stigma: Analyzing the Food Stamps Program

    No full text
Hunger and access to healthy and affordable foods are challenges that many Americans living at or below the poverty level faced before the COVID-19 pandemic and the burden has worsened since its start. This additional obstacle has placed many individuals in a position to prioritize other fees, such as rent and transportation, over the necessity of food and nutrition. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers numerous nutritional assistance programs to address these issues, the largest being The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamps Program. This program provides low-income individuals and families with supplemental benefits to purchase foods and provide nutrition. Despite the known benefits of SNAP, some individuals hold negative sentiments regarding it and its expenditures. The goal of this study is to better understand varying opinions, by using online survey participant data to create generalizations to serve as a representation of the public\u27s views and observe related stigmas. More specifically, this project investigates the impact that the SNAP program has on the United States and explores participant\u27s demographic associations in relation to their opinions, cognitive rationality, and perception of terminology surrounding the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program using stigma and social cognition theories

Gene Editing, Designer Humans, and the Will to Live: A Glitch Analysis of Blade Runner

    No full text
With technology continuing its ever-forward march, we as a species are becoming more intertwined with it day by day. With the potential rise in gene editing brought on by technology such as CRISPR, the temptation to mistreat those who do not conform to society’s preordained ideals is high. Therefore, a glitch analysis of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Blade Runner, and Blade Runner 2049 can give much insight into the coming age. This analysis is framed through Legacy Russell’s recent book Glitch Feminism: A Manifesto. Filtered through Legacy Russell’s book, both Deckard and Joe’s actions in Do Androids Dream of Sheep?, Blade Runner, and Blade Runner 2049 remind us all that empathy is needed despite anyone’s genetic outcome or make up, and that if we remember to live our lives with care for others, we can retain our humanity despite whatever gene technology may bring

    Covid-19 & Student Isolation

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of Covid-19 on students’ mental health, academic performance, and sense of social isolation. Given the ongoing status of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a lack of studies concerning the effects of the sense of isolation resulting from strict regulations put in place to minimize the spread of the virus in college students and its consequent impact on their mental health and academic performance. However, previous studies have shown a correlation between sense of isolation, mental health, and academic performance. This study elaborates on previous research and serve to establish a link between sense of social isolation, mental health and academic performance for current Marshall University students and understand how heavily the COVID-19 pandemic impacted students’ lives
