Appalachian Parent and Provider Views on the Use of Pharmacies for Human Papillomavirus Vaccination in Adolescents
Introduction
The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake in West Virginia is lagging despite being highly protective against HPV-related diseases.
Methods
This study aimed to determine parent and provider perceptions on using pharmacies for HPV vaccination in adolescents. The study surveyed both parents and providers in a rural academic institution. Providers were surveyed before and 6 months after an educational intervention that instructed providers on local legislation and the logistics of prescribing the HPV vaccine through pharmacies. The provider survey assessed awareness of pharmacy vaccine access and prescribing practices. Parents of adolescents were surveyed to determine what patients might benefit most from pharmacy access for vaccination.
Results
A total of 71 providers completed the initial survey, and 45 completed the six-month assessment. Only 22.5% were aware of the pharmacy legislation at the initial survey, and 64.4% were aware at six months (p=
Conclusion
Pharmacy provision of HPV vaccination for adolescents is underutilized. Parents and providers have favorable views on using pharmacies for HPV vaccination
Association of Electronic Medical Records and Opioid Prescription
A Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) is an electronic database that tracks controlled substance prescriptions in a state. PDMPs can provide health authorities timely information about prescribing and patient behaviors that contribute to the epidemic and facilitate an agile and directed response. Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS) aimed to eliminate paper prescriptions by allowing clinical prescribers to write prescriptions electronically, making them digital and trackable for both the prescriber and the pharmacist and has been an essential part of any health information technology system, as well as a requirement for \u27meaningful use\u27 (Blumenthal & Tavenner, 2010). However, one of the single most difficult challenges for any prescriber was distinguishing between the legitimate prescription of controlled substances and the prescription potentially used for illegitimate purposes (Preuss et al., 2021)
0879: Sarah and William Denman Collection, 1933-2013
Sarah Denman served as the provost and senior vice president of academic affairs for Marshall University. She worked with the university for 33 years, starting her career with the Marshall in 1975. Dr. Denman played a major role in various projects including the merger of the West Virginia Graduate College in the Charleston area as a part of Marshall, development of the Marshall Community and Technical college, and worked with State Senator Robert Plymale to start an new engineering program at Marshall, as well as many other projects that broadened Marshall’s available programs, it’s national accreditation, and the recognition of the university’s students and staff.Sa
William Denman was the Director of the Society of Yeager Scholars, Chair of the Department of Communication Studies, and Interim Director of the Integrated Science and Technology Program in the College of Science for Marshall University. Dr. Denman’s scholarship was focused on the role of rhetoric, as a human activity, in the shaping of societies. His publications dealt with the need for argument to be more heavily featured in the teaching of public speaking as a means of empowering citizens. In addition, he focused on the ways in which citizens worked, prior to World War II, to influence public opinion on American entry into the war in Europe
Measurement Properties of Outcome Measures Used to Assess Physical Impairments in Patients After Distal Radius Fracture: A Systematic Review
Objectives: Individuals with distal radius fractures (DRF) may experience difficulty with gripping an object, painful wrist movements, sensorimotor difficulties, and swelling around the wrist and hand. A comprehensive review of the existing evidence concerning the measurement properties of common physical impairment measures can provide a valuable resource to guide hand therapy practice while managing DRF. The primary objective was to locate and assess the quality of literature on the measurement properties for the measures of physical impairment used in individuals with DRF.
Methods: Two reviewers searched PubMed, CINAHL, and EMBASE. A combination of DRF, measurement properties, and physical impairments were used as keywords, and articles were independently assessed using the Consensus-Based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments critical appraisal tool. Primary studies were included if they examined at least 1 of the following: reliability, validity, responsiveness, or indices of true and meaningful changes for measures of physical impairment in the DRF sample. A total of 19 articles were included in this review. The quality of the studies ranged from 46% to 92%. This review suggests that measures such as assessment of grip strength and supination and pronation range of motion (ROM), using various goniometric devices, showed good intrarater and interrater reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness in individuals with DRF.
Conclusion: Acceptable reliability and responsiveness were reported in grip and wrist ROM assessments for measuring changes in wrist and hand function after DRF; however, wrist ROM assessed using traditional goniometric techniques were less reliable in individuals with DRF.
Impact: This study provides insight into which objective tools might be better suited for measuring outcomes related to DRF
