ADHD in Romantic Relationships: Exploring Relational Dialectics in Mixed-Neurotype Couples

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to understand the way romantic relationship tensions are communicated between partners in couples affected by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Extant research asserts that the presence of ADHD in one relational partner of romantic relationships is associated with relational dissatisfaction, poor relational communication practices, and a higher risk for dissolution of the relationship (Bruner et al., 2015; Eakin et al., 2004; Robin & Payson, 2002). Little effort has been made to understand what can be done to mitigate these risks. The present study focused on the communication practices at work in four cohabiting, romantic pairs consisting of a neurodivergent (ADHD) and neurotypical (non-ADHD) partner. The couples were screened for eligibility, then interviewed separately about their relational communication behaviors, their experiences with relational tensions, and how they manage dialectics within their relationship. Using Baxter and Montgomery’s Relational Dialectics Theory (1996), this research highlights the way these mixed-neurotype couples successfully manage their romantic relationships

Dream Enactment Behavior: A Documented Case Presenation with a Transition from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to REM Behavior Disorder

    Get PDF
Dream enactment behavior (DEB) contains the hallmark criteria for the diagnosis of REM behavior disorder (RBD) and it is attributed as the underlying mechanism with its distinct pathology and presentation. The recently described condition, trauma associated sleep disorder (TSD), is closely related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and shares the same diagnostic criteria for RBD but they differ significantly in their underlying pathophysiology. The transition from one to another has not been described well (and only self-reported) in the medical literature. This article describes a case study of a patient with a history of PTSD in remission, who developed symptoms documented by polysomnography that are typical of idiopathic RBD that are not connected to the patient\u27s previous traum

The Expansion of Lyme Disease: A Case of Infection in the Absence of Known Exposure

    Get PDF
Lyme disease is a systemic infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi often carried the Ixodes tick. It is associated with dermatologic manifestations, most notably the “bullseye rash” of erythema migrans. The disease can progress in stages to involve other organs such as joints, heart, and the nervous system. Lyme disease is continuing to spread, with West Virginia cases increasing dramatically in the last 2 decades. As a result, physicians are likely to encounter this disease more often, making recognition and early treatment a top priority in order to prevent potentially dangerous sequelae. We present a case of a 60-year-old man who presented with multiple erythematous annular plaques and was subsequently diagnosed with Lyme disease. He had no known exposure to ticks, was treated for Lyme Disease, and subsequently developed a Jarisch- Herxheimer reaction (JHR)
