The Role of Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (Ends) Flavorants on Nicotine Addiction and Neurological Function
Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death worldwide, with nearly half a million deaths per year in the United States alone. Of the 70% of adult smokers in the United States that desire to quit, only ~7% are successful. The long-standing use and dependence of these products, despite known health consequences, is primarily attributed to the nicotine-induced neurobiological and neurophysiological adaptations that take place during chronic use. Adolescent nicotine exposure alters the developing brain while also priming the brain for other drug addictions later in life. Though nicotine-induced reinforcement, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) upregulation, and enhanced dopamine neuron excitability have been discovered and studied over the past several decades, another key player in nicotine dependence is flavoring chemicals. Characterizing flavors other than menthol have been banned in combustible cigarettes, yet more than 15,000 flavor options remain available for electronic cigarette users. Electronic cigarettes, or electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), were originally intended to provide a cleaner nicotine delivery system for chronic smokers, yet due to the enticing market of flavored products and the growing popularity of zero-nicotine flavored e-liquids among ENDS users, these devices exhibit an even greater concern than combustible cigarettes. With the new wave of nicotine users, especially those between the ages of 12 and 18, further studies need to be done to identify the mechanisms that flavor chemicals have on the dependence process and to contribute to future FDA regulations. This dissertation encompasses the investigations into popular green apple flavor chemicals and identifies their roles on reward and reinforcement in a vapor self-administration model with mice as well as their role in nAChR trafficking within cultured neuroblastoma-2a cells. Additionally, this work summarizes the effects of non-contingent vapor exposure, similar to human vaping patterns, on ex vivo nAChR expression, neuronal firing, and subsequent dopamine release in the ventral striatum of mice. These findings will provide insight into the neurological effects of persistent ENDS use in an attempt to combat the growing use of these products among the adolescent population
Indian Mass Conversions to Christianity: Causes and Sermons
Religions and sociological traditions are something that gives a base to human life. From the beginning, people are using sermons and manuscripts for conversion of individuals or groups to their right way however among the congested multi-religious population of the sub-continent, sermons, preaching, behavior, and manuscripts were the fundamental driver of mass conversions. In this article, the research question is what is the fundamental cause for mass conversions towards Christianity, especially among Dalit and Chura families in the sub-continent i.e., sermons or other social attractions? This chapter analytically investigates some less highlighted parts of conversions to Christianity in the sub-continent regarding various networks of Christian preachers, authorities, and anti-social justice elements that became the cause of the mass conversions of Dalits, Churas, and Madharis communities. It discussed the cases of Dalits ladies’ conversions based on social motivation and people in particular; Begum Balqees Shaykh (the social lobbyist and political pioneer), Rahil Patel Previous Hindu Priest), Pandita Ramabai (the ladies privileges dissident), and Mario Joseph (previous Muslim Imam Suleiman) changed over on profound ties
A Selective History of Sermon Studies
In this opening session, Robert Ellison and Keith Francis provided a quick survey of major developments in the field of sermon studies, with a focus on projects they and other conferencegoers had been directly involved in
Prescription Drug Importation Update
The FDA Safety and Landmark Advancements Act of 2022 (FDASLA), introduced in May, contains provisions about importing prescription drugs from Canada & more
Fish Community Trends in the Greenup Pool, Ohio River
Bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (H. molitrix), collectively referred to as Asian carps, are invasive species that may negatively affect native species through plankton resource exploitation mechanisms. Bighead and silver carp escaped into the Mississippi River basin in the early 1970s and have been steadily migrating upstream. The Greenup Pool lies upstream of the current known invasion of Asian carp in the Ohio River. The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) has conducted probabilistic electrofishing community surveys in the Greenup Pool since 2006 on a five-year cycle. The objective of this study was to compare body condition of commonly collected fishes between ORSANCO survey years using relative weight and Fulton’s condition factor. Channel catfish decreased in mean relative weight between 2011 and 2016, and sauger increased in mean relative weight between 2006-2011 and 2006-2016. The second objective of this study was to explore potential trends in fish community distribution in the Greenup Pool using nonmetric multidimensional scaling. The fish community appeared to show dissimilarity between the lower Greenup Pool and the middle and upper pools. This study will serve as a baseline for the Greenup Pool preceding the invasion of bigheaded carps for future studies and comparisons
