Longitudinal Implications of Social Integration for Age and Gender Differences in Late-Life Physical Functioning
Social integration has documented benefits for late-life health; yet, little is known about its impacts on trajectories of physical functioning. This study examines age and gender differences in the longitudinal associations between social integration and activities of daily living (ADLs) using a hierarchical linear model with three waves of survey data collected over 4 years from the Social Integration and Aging Study (N = 400; baseline mean age = 80.3). Findings indicated some interaction effects of age, gender, and/or social integration on ADL trajectories. Among those of more advanced age, women showed greater increases in ADL limitations than men, and individuals with lower social integration experienced greater increases in ADL limitations than those with higher social integration. Neither of these patterns were found among younger older adults. This study highlights the benefits of longitudinal research on social integration and the need to explore practical interventions for promoting social integration particularly among the oldest older adults
Longitudinal and Age-Related Implications of Primary and Secondary Control for Hedonic and Eudaimonic Well-Being
The longitudinal associations of primary and secondary control with two distinct aspects of happiness including hedonic/subjective and eudaimonic/psychological well-being had not been fully studied. The present study aimed to contribute to the literature by examining these associations and their age differences. Using data from the second and third waves of the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS; N = 4963, aged 28 to 84 at baseline), the present study conducted structural equation modeling analyses to examine whether one primary control strategy (persistence in goal striving) and two secondary control strategies (positive reappraisals and lowering aspirations) predicted residualized changes in the latent constructs of subjective well-being (SWB) and psychological well-being (PWB) and whether there were age differences in these associations. The results indicate that persistence in goal striving and lowering aspirations overall predicted changes in PWB while none of the control strategies did for SWB, but some age differences were found. Whereas these differences somewhat varied for the outcomes of SWB and PWB, the findings indicate tendencies for older individuals compared to younger individuals of more negative (or less positive) associations of persistence in goal striving and more positive (or less negative) and more negative associations of positive reappraisals and lowering aspirations, respectively, with these outcomes. The present study suggested potential directions of future research aimed at further examining the role of primary and secondary control for happiness and exploring potential interventions to promote happiness, for example, by modifying primary and/or secondary control for adults of different ages
New Formulations of the Union-Closed Sets Conjecture

Random Partition based Adaptive Distributed Kernelized SVM for Big Data
In this paper, we present a distributed classification technique for big data by efficiently using distributed storage architecture and data processing units of a cluster. While handling such large data, the existing approaches consider specific data partitioning techniques which demand complete data be processed before partitioning. This leads to an excessive overhead of high computation and data communication. The proposed method does not require any pre-structured data partitioning technique and is also adaptive to big data mining tools. We hypothesize that an effective aggregation of the information generated from data partitions by subprocesses of the complete learning process can lead to accurate prediction results while reducing the overall time complexity. We build three SVM based classifiers, namely one phase voting SVM (1PVSVM), two phase voting SVM (2PVSVM), and similarity based SVM (SIMSVM). Each of these classifiers utilizes the support vectors as the local information to construct the synthesized learner for efficiently reducing the training time and ensuring minimal communication between processing units. In this context, an extensive empirical analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of our classifiers when compared to other existing approaches on several benchmark datasets. However, among existing methods and three of our proposed (1PVSVM, 2PVSIM, and SIMSVM) methods, SIMSVM is the most efficient. Considering MNIST dataset, SIMSVM achieves an average speedup ratio of 0.78 and minimum scalability of 73% when the data size is scaled up to 10 times. It also retains high accuracy (99%) similar to centralized approaches

Sequential assembly of 1-D and 2-D origami arrays
DNA origami, invented by Paul Rothemund in 2006, provides many possible routes for the synthesis of complex macromolecular assemblies. This project involves the creation of 1-D and 2-D arrays of cross origami to support the development of DNA detection devices by providing precise platforms for these devices. The M13 plasmid is the most commonly used scaffold in DNA nanotechnology, limiting the size and complexity of an individual DNA origami construct. However, by creating larger assemblies, the dimensions can be multiplied. For example, by alternating two different types of cross origami, optical reporters can be separated by 200 nm, which is beyond the Abbe optical limit for optical microscopy. Due to apparent low yields of longer alternating structures and high amounts of shorter by-products, the research was directed into creating and purifying dimers to be utilized as “building blocks” for arrays. With dimers being utilized as the new “building blocks”, several different designs were created to expand the support systems for optical imaging. Two approaches were primarily utilized. The first approach is the assembly of 1-D arrays of origami dimers. The idea of generating and purifying dimers as the new “building block” was to simplify the process by maintaining a 1:1 stoichiometry of the two-component origami structure; however, a low yield of the new “building block” at the purification/isolation stage redirected the research to the second approach. The second approach consisted of a multi-step assembly approach which eliminated the dimer isolation stage and allowed the production of much more favorable yields. A primary 1-D array of controlled length was generated by using a fixed stoichiometry of chain termination constructs to monomer components. A second 1-D row array was then assembled on this primary array. This in turn led to the creation of an array of dimers. The final step in creating the 2-D array was to cross-link the DNA origami in the second row. After extensive research, it was observed that there was a limitation with on-surface immobilized dimer cross linking using mica as the substrate. Since glass is the desired final substrate for sample deposition, finding a technique to give a better population of arrays per unit area was necessary. Thus, in solution reaction on glass was employed to allow for inter-strand cross linking to create dimer arrays for the assembly of sensing device platforms
Prenatal Exposure to Methamphetamine Causes Vascular Dysfunction in Adult Male Offspring
Methamphetamine use during pregnancy can have negative consequences on the offspring. However, most studies investigating the impact of prenatal exposure to methamphetamine have focused on behavioral and neurological outcomes. Relatively little is known regarding the impact of prenatal methamphetamine on the adult cardiovascular system. This study investigated the impact of chronic fetal exposure to methamphetamine on vascular function in adult offspring. Pregnant female rats received daily saline or methamphetamine (5 mg/kg) injections starting on gestational day 1 and continuing until the pups were born. Vascular function was assessed in 5 month old offspring. Prenatal methamphetamine significantly decreased both the efficacy and potency of acetylcholine-induced relaxation in isolated male (but not female) aortas when perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) remained intact. However, prenatal methamphetamine had no impact on acetylcholine-induced relaxation when PVAT was removed. Nitroprusside-induced relaxation of the aorta was unaffected by prenatal methamphetamine. Angiotensin II-induced contractile responses were significantly potentiated in male (but not female) aortas regardless of the presence of PVAT. This effect was reversed by L-nitro arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). Serotonin- and phenylephrine-induced contraction were unaffected by prenatal methamphetamine. Prenatal methamphetamine had no impact on acetylcholine-induced relaxation of third order mesenteric arteries and no effect on basal blood pressure. These data provide evidence that prenatal exposure to methamphetamine sex-dependently alters vasomotor function in the vasculature and may increase the risk of developing vascular disorders later in adult life
