A Study on Formerly Incarcerated Women From Appalachia Pursuing Higher Education

    Get PDF
The pursuit of higher education is a goal that is embedded in secondary education and often correlated with the American dream. This study concentrated on the barriers that women with a felony conviction face when pursuing higher education after incarceration. Based on the identified barriers, current best practices for admission to higher education institutions and individual resources available for the ex-offender population were assessed. Using a questionnaire and interviews, a qualitative research approach helped identify the barriers that women with a felony conviction face when pursuing education and best practice solutions for institutions of higher education when working with the felony population. The study revealed inconsistencies and a lack of best practices for admission policies when institutions of higher education include a criminal background question on the admission application. The interview participants indicated multiple barriers that exist for women who are pursuing higher education

A Retrospective Analysis of Ebola Virus Disease in Liberia

    Get PDF
The outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) centered in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone from 2013-2016 was the longest and largest such outbreak on record. At least 30,000 cases were reported, and the outbreak lasted nearly two-and-a-half years. Despite the progress made during and since that time, many questions remain unanswered. The studies here utilize a large set of nearly 750 whole blood samples from patients that were triaged and treated at the ELWA-3 Ebola treatment unit in Monrovia, Liberia in 2014 and 2015. Viral load, as approximated by qRT-PCR diagnostic assays in the field, has been shown to correlate with outcome, with higher viral loads increasing the risk of death. Here, viral load has been more accurately estimated by droplet digital PCR and shown to likely provide improved prognostic. These reanalyzed viral load data furthermore suggest that earlier initiation of supportive care, prior to peak viremia, did not improve outcomes in EVD patients at ELWA-3. Concern has also arisen regarding the possibility of bacteremia developing secondary to EVD. The samples here were analyzed using both a classic diagnostic microbiological approach and a targeting deep sequencing approach to evaluate this hypothesis, and bacteremia was found to be rare in EVD patients, with no increase in prevalence upon comparison to an EVD-negative cohort. Virological studies were also undertaken that involved isolating Ebola virus (EBOV) from the clinical samples, evaluating the isolation sensitivity of cell lines for these purposes, and analyzing the sequences obtained from EBOV isolates in comparison with sequences directly from the blood. Together, these data should further our understanding of both EVD and EBOV and possibly inform improvements in patient care

A Trusted Platform for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Based Bridge Inspection Management System

    Get PDF
Bridge inspection has a pivotal role in assuring the safety of critical structures constituting society. However, high cost, worker safety, and low objectivity of quality are classic problems in traditional visual inspection. Recent trends in bridge inspection have led to a proliferation of research utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This thesis proposes a Trusted Platform for Bridge Inspection Management System (Trusted-BIMS) for safe and efficient bridge inspection by proving the UAV-based inspection process and improving the prototype of the previous study. Designed based on a Zero-Trust (ZT) strategy, Trusted-BIMS consist of (1) a database-driven web framework with security features for bridge inspection management, (2) a mobile interface supporting the inspection data collection using UAVs, and (3) a mutual authentication protocol for the Internet of Things (IoTs). The server script language used to implement the web system was PHP and React Native was used for the mobile application development. The secure communication algorithm used server-side PHP and client-side JavaScript, and MySQL was adopted as the database. This paper provides an overview and details of Trusted-BIMS and demonstrates the overall process of bridge inspection using UAVs and applied technologies to the proposed platform. The result of this research will make an important contribution to the field of UAV-based bridge inspection. Further research can be conducted on refined implementations of security algorithms, more comprehensive security schemes, and machine learning technology to reduce human intervention

From Repertorium to Database: Research Resources for Sermon Scholars

    No full text
Two of the most fundamental—and most vexing—questions in sermon studies are “What is a sermon?” and “How can I find the sermons I need?” Tools for answering the latter question go by many names, ranging from the common (“bibliography,” “database”) to the obscure (“nomenclator,” “repertorium”). This paper will begin with a historical survey of these terms, from roughly the 17th century to the present day; after that, I will discuss and evaluate some of the more beneficial electronic resources currently available to sermon scholars

And the beat goes on : Charles Spurgeon, Sermon Book Series, and the Enduring Impact of the Sermon

The ending of the publication of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit book series in 1916 seem to signal a turning point in the history of preaching and the sermon at the time. Though the reason for ceasing publication was not directly related to preaching – the shortage of paper during the Great War – book series of Charles Spurgeon’s sermons had been published regularly since the 1850s. Even though Spurgeon himself had died in 1892, the annual publication of his sermons preached at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in South London had continued as well as the publication of groups of Spurgeon’s sermons (such as The People’s Christ and other sermons in 1903 and The Old Gospel and the New Theology. Twelve Sermons in 1908). In other words, the publication of Spurgeon’s sermons had survived not only wars and economic recessions, but the death of the preacher himself. And then there was 1916 and the abrupt cessation of the publication of Spurgeon’s sermons. The inflexion point seemed important for this reason: there was something could stop the output of Spurgeon’s homilies – war on a grand scale. Something was more important than preaching and sermons. Perhaps the result might be that preaching and the sermon might go the way of other certainties of British life such as the role of women in society: changed and never the same as before. But in 1937, Marshall, Morgan & Scott published a series of books under the general title “Spurgeon’s ‘Twelve Sermons Series’” Each of the seven volumes had twelve sermons on topics such as holiness and the Holy Spirit. In 1953 ??? published another set of books in the Twelve Sermons series. In 1974, Baker Book House published another set of books in the series and then did the same in 1994 and 1995. Despite the advent of radio, TV, records, cassettes, and CDs as means to disseminate sermons, books of Spurgeon’s sermons appeared throughout the twentieth century. Whatever the import of 1916, it did not signal the cessation of publications from Spurgeon’s homiletic output. The sermon published in book form, just like the sermon and preaching was an enduring feature of religious life in Britain and beyond in the twentieth century

Retention Issues in Nonprofit University Foundations

    Get PDF
Turnover of major gift officers (MGOs) within university foundations has been a problem for foundations and their affiliated universities. Turnover of MGOs results in less fundraised dollars, fewer donor-fundraiser relationships, and higher incomings costs. Retention of MGOs is vital for foundations’ success and directly correlates to the overall prosperity of the respective university. The purpose of this descriptive, non-experimental study that utilized a cross-sectional survey design was to examine perceptions of currently employed MGOs, in the interest of determining what was important to them to remain employed at their nonprofit university foundation. Using a web-based survey, data showed MGOs need to feel appreciated and valued within their foundations. They were in pursuit of more responsibility over the fundraising strategies and their longevity in their position was dependent on their work culture. Data also found older MGOs are mostly intrinsically motivated, less motivated by compensation, and most likely to stay employed. The perceptions of work culture, perceived value, and workplace environment provided by the currently employed MGOs may provide a better understanding for employers to retain MGOs
