Diagnosis of Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon in a newborn
Kasabach-Merritt Phenomenon (KMP) is a rare and potentially life-threatening coagulopathy that has high bleeding risk and is characterized by severe thrombocytopenia and hypofibrinogenemia. Timely diagnosis and intervention are essential, as untreated kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) or tufted angioma (TA) associated with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP) can result in significant morbidity and mortality..
We report a case of a full-term female neonate who was noted to have a large vascular scalp mass at birth. The tumor was initially misidentified as an infantile and a congenital hemangioma. Upon specialty evaluation at a vascular anomaly center and additional diagnostics, the child was diagnosed with KHE and KMP. The patient was treated with oral sirolimus and tapering course of oral steroid, resulting in resolution of coagulopathy and substantial clinical improvement, and ultimately, underwent surgical tumor excision. This case highlights the importance of appropriate diagnosis and management of an infant with KHE with KMP
Absolute Extraction: Utilizing Rural Critical Criminology to Examine Appalachia’s Toxic Dependence on Extractive Industries
Brought forth by common rhetoric, Appalachia is often viewed as the closest space to that of an empyrean domain. Separated from the sleepless city, its allure rests in its created identity of a quiet, green escape from the city, which offers serenity on all fronts. Although Appalachia can fulfill this profile, such an ascension ignores the burning yellow grass below. The purpose of this paper is to examine the history of the destruction of Appalachia through the lens of extractive industries and the region’s designation as a sacrifice zone. Through the application of rural critical criminology, this paper holds that the region has been granted an identity similar to that of a waste repository, in which the “drunken hillbillies,” or otherized citizens, are their own worst enemy. Due to this, it has allowed for the pervasive rooting of three prominent extractive industries, with those being the coal, carceral, and natural gas pipeline industries, all of which has profound effects on the Appalachian land, identity, and body. Following the overview, a multidimensional reform through the planes of enlightenment, labor resistance movements, and environmental regulations is discussed to help remove the grip of extractive industries on the land, and lead Appalachia back to an era of autonomy
Conflict Resolution Styles in Intimate Relationships of College Students with Adverse Childhood Experiences
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), as potentially traumatic early-life experiences, can influence how individuals relate to others, often leading to challenges in intimate relationships. During the transition to adulthood, college students engage in identity development while also navigating the critical skill of conflict resolution necessary for fostering and maintaining intimate relationships. In this study, we collected data from 434 college students at a Midwest university regarding their ACEs and conflict resolution styles using the 10-item ACEs questionnaire and the Conflict Resolution Styles Inventory (CRSI). Results showed significant differences in ACEs scores based on demographic factors such as gender, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation. In addition, results indicated that ACEs were strongly associated with three non-positive problem-solving styles (i.e., Conflict Engagement, Conflict Withdrawal, and Compliance) in resolving conflicts. Implications for counselors and counselor educators regarding clinical work and the training process are discussed

Opening the door, but not entering: adult college students who apply, but do not enroll
This study used a mixed method research design and employed an explanatory sequential design, which collected, analyzed, and combined both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore why adult, non-traditional students would apply to a college, but not enroll. This disconnect affects not only the applicant, but also the institution, as multiple resources for both parties will be utilized and not recovered. The quantitative component of the study included data from an established segment of applicants who did not enroll at Thomas Edison State University (TESU). The qualitative component utilized a phenomenological approach and included the data gathered through interviews with prospective students who applied to but did not enroll in TESU. Thematic analysis was used to organize and interpret the data gathered through both quantitative and qualitative research. Findings suggest that there are many factors which contribute to the disconnect between application and enrollment. Institutions could proactively address some of these factors to assist more applicants to progress to enrollment. Further research suggestions include identifying the generational expectations and differences of: prospective college students who have yet to apply, college applicants, and admitted applicants who did not enroll; understanding the perceived value and economic return of an academic degree; exploring the role of Artificial Intelligence and its use as a tool to bridge the gap between prospective students, applicants and enrolled students; and discerning the relevance of an academic credential within the expectations of industry and career growth
