    Poor Fuel: The Autobiography of a Nonexistent Game combines act, admission, past, and future. If it existed, Poor Fuel would be a procedural, time-limited, mood-management game. Its explicit goals would be minimizing regrets and maximizing prospects. From within a world of countless rules, expectations, and paths, you—a lit and ever-diminishing candle—would cultivate enjoyment through the balance of internally- and externally-imposed pressures. The ending, as gameplay fades into white, would feature the words: Light your life, watch your wick, choose your presence, choose your absence; this is not the end but a beginning, make sure you are who chooses. But Poor Fuel does not exist. Instead, what exists is the autobiography of its absence. A tale told in fragments. An accounting of losses, failures, inspirations, near-becomings. An unlit wick of imbalance. Through the construction of its own nothing, Poor Fuel: The Autobiography of a Nonexistent Game embodies the point at which two lives collide: the one that was and the one that could be. The result is not a game one plays, but the game we all play

    This paper explores the cultural development of the literary madwoman trope, arguing it is iconicized by Shakespeare’s Ophelia and traceable through the maladaptive evolution of her identity through history, in which she is objectified and othered through patriarchal institutions of psychiatry, art, literature, and music. Through this objectification and othering, this paper summates that the madwoman trope has come to be defined by this erasure of identity that Ophelia endures, and contemporary womanhood is thus defined by one’s ability to inhabit the perfect intersection between madness and beauty

    Celiac Disease: A Review

    Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease with both allergy and autoimmune characteristics. It affects 0.5-1% of the population and is particularly common in Western countries. Symptoms include villous atrophy and malabsorption due to the tissue damage from inappropriate immune response. There is no cure, though celiac is typically treated with a strict, lifelong gluten free diet. The immune response in patients with celiac disease is predominantly caused by tissue transglutaminase enzyme activity and activated T cells in response to gluten ingestion, which kill intestine lining. Other therapies in research include immunotherapies and genetically modified wheat. This paper is a comprehensive review of the disease itself, the mechanism by which celiac presents clinical symptoms, as well as potential therapies or treatments

    ESCAPE: A Photographic Exploration of Taking Up Space and How the Urban Landscape Reflects and Resists Women’s Presence

    This photographic body of work explores the concept of taking up space through the ways the urban landscape reflects and resists women’s presence. The images focus on the built environment itself; spaces that often feel unwelcoming, surveilled, or off-limits. They interrogate how women are conditioned to navigate public spaces with caution and heightened awareness. Drawing inspiration from work by authors such as Mary Beard and Leslie Kern, the project expands upon Beard’s examination of the history of women being systematically silenced and excluded from public life, alongside Kern’s analysis of how this exclusion occurs in contemporary physical manifestations of these dynamics within cities. Shot on 35mm black and white film, the photographs emphasize starkness and isolation. The images are accompanied by text taken from personal conversations with women to reveal the various dimensions of these encounters with the urban landscape. This project aims to validate an intense experience that is widely normalized among women. It also aims to question not just what is felt, but the systems and patterns in place that make this so common

    Foundation species in marine ecosystems are often sessile invertebrates that rely on a planktonic larval stage for transport between populations and the colonization of new habitats. Larval transport is controlled by advection from currents but is mediated by swimming behavior and responses to water conditions such as temperature and salinity. Through the use of biophysical modeling, we can incorporate hydrodynamic forces with biological models to predict where larvae are delivered and how transport is impacted by different swimming behaviors and changing ocean conditions. Output from these models can inform restoration efforts through highlighting areas of potential settlement and more suitable habitats, allowing for more effective use of limited resources. Here, I use an Rbased biophysical particle tracking model to assess the impacts of swimming behavior (Chapter 1) and climate change (Chapter 2) on the larval transport of Olympia oysters (Ostrea lurida), a key foundation species in the Salish Sea that have undergone dramatic population reduction since European colonization of the Pacific Northwest coast. My results show that some restoration sites support larval retention and export better than others and may have more suitable habitat for retained larvae, but site-specific knowledge of swimming behavior is critical to understanding its effects on larval transport. I find that Olympia oyster larvae may fare better under future climate conditions, with increased growth and potential export, which could improve retained populations and connectivity between them. I further assess the implications of swimming behavior and climate change on larval transport, propose restoration recommendations, and highlight the usefulness of the transport model for other planktonic species in the Salish Sea

    These projects focused on two main areas: (1) water quality monitoring, particularly in relation to harmful algal blooms, and (2) beaver ecology and dam management as part of a broader effort to support watershed health and sustainable park maintenance practices. My water quality work drew on skills I had developed in a Water Quality course with Professor Manuel Montaño, where I used a YSI Pro to measure dissolved oxygen (mg/L), specific conductivity, and water temperature, and learned about harmful algal blooms in freshwater systems caused by anthropogenic stormwater runoff containing excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. My foundation in ecology knowledge from Jim Helfield\u27s Fundamentals of Ecology class was very helpful to conceptualizing beaver dam maintenance work

    Examining the role of purity culture in educational book censorship: A study to support conversations across the divide

    This qualitative study explores the intersection between purity culture and contemporary school book challenges by examining the motivations and perspectives of adults who were raised within purity culture and who have actively challenged texts in public schools or served on school boards that enacted restrictive book policies. Through a series of in-depth interviews, the study identifies how key themes of purity culture—including sexual shame, rigid gender roles, and a belief that sexual purity is tied to a person\u27s worth and value—shape participants\u27 views of school curriculum and library materials. Findings validated six dominant themes from existing literature on purity culture. The study\u27s primary aim is to provide educational leaders with a practical guide for navigating book and curriculum challenges. It emphasizes the importance of understanding purity culture not as a fringe movement but as a belief system with widespread influence across religious and political lines. This research contributes to the broader discourse on cultural conflict in schools and the politicization of education
