    But I’m Trying so Hard to be Good! The Effects of Regulatory Focus on Early Processing and Encoding of Black Faces

    While people can consciously engage with regulatory goals to suppress potentially biased behavior after social identities are perceived and their associated stereotypes are cued, unconscious engagement with motivational or regulatory goals (Higgins, 1997) has also been shown to influence earlier cognitive processes (Cunningham et al., 2012; Moskowitz et al., 1999). Therefore, it may be the case that regulatory goals can also influence automatic social categorization, and more specifically, how individuals’ faces are encoded during early and late stages of face processing. Across two studies, this thesis uses assessments of recognition accuracy and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to test whether explicit motivations to promote prosocial behavior alter intergroup processing biases between Black and White faces during face perception. Consistent with previous work, results indicate that Black faces are recognized less accurately than White faces and are differentiated as early as 80 ms after perceiving a face. Although we did not find evidence to suggest that regulatory goals are sufficient to increase recognition of Black faces, results indicate that a promotion regulatory focus appears to increase the emotional salience and attentional significance of facial stimuli, regardless of race. Overall, the present work provides a new framework to conceptualize associations between race and motivations to regulate biased behavior at the perceptual level in the context of face processing

    Quantifying the carbon storage potential of submarine fans: an example from the Nitinat Fan in the Cascadia Margin

    Terrestrial organic carbon (OC) is transported by rivers to continental margins and eventually deposited on the ocean floor by turbidity currents. Plant and wood fragments have been found to contribute significantly to the carbon load deposited on river-dominated continental margins, but carbon quantification is often exclusively performed on the fine-grained particles (\u3c 2mm) excluding the coarse particulate fractions (\u3e 2mm). Turbidites samples from the Nitinat Fan in the Cascadia Basin within the Pacific Northwest were analyzed to quantify OC, determine OC sourcing, and characterize “sedimentary wood” using stable carbon isotope ratios and Raman microscopy. The results from this research show that OC sourcing in the Nitinat Fan is mostly from terrestrial C3 vascular vegetation based on carbon isotopes and C:N ratios. In some wood-containing sedimentary layers, more than 90% of the carbon is stored as woody debris rather than dispersed organic carbon. On average, coarse (\u3e2mm) woody debris have a higher carbon content (60%) than finer (\u3c 2mm) woody debris (40%) and therefore contributes more to bulk organic carbon (OCbulk ), 77% vs. 23% respectively. Sedimentary layers that incorporate wood were found to contain 6 times more carbon than regular fan sediment suggesting previous studies may have underestimated carbon storage in the ocean sink. Raman microscopy was used to characterize woody debris (sedimentary wood), but while initial applications proved to be challenging for sedimentary wood samples that are degraded, the method was efficient at determining wood type (angiosperm vs. gymnosperm) and sometimes offer identification at the species level, when the wood is unaltered

    On December 14th, 2024, sixteen humans launched from Lee’s Ferry, AZ on a 25-day river expedition through the Grand Canyon along the Colorado River. After 226 river miles, 42 major rapids, 21 camps, and 4 layovers, they were invited to submit reflections, poems, essays, or photos from their time spent in, and with, the canyon. This project, Becoming Creatured, is the resulting creative conglomerate showcasing the profound impact of river spaces, community, and belonging to each other and to the land

    Hydrothermal vent ecosystems, characterized by patchy distributions of benthic chemosynthetic communities, rely on larval dispersal for connectivity, colonization, and recovery following tectonic disturbances. Here, we investigated larval communities at varying altitudes above the seafloor at recently disturbed vent fields in the Lau Basin (Tonga) following the 2022 Hunga eruption, which caused a mass mortality of foundation species such as chemosymbiotic molluscs. Larval communities were assessed using 1) AUV Sentry equipped with SyPRID, 2) a McLane Large Volume Water System, and 3) larval settlement tube traps to estimate larval supply to the seafloor. Non-parametric community analysis of larval pools from ash impacted and unimpacted sites showed no significant community differences based on geographic location. Instead, significant community differences were identified between larval communities collected with the larval pump near the seafloor (2 meters above bottom) and with the SyPRID at higher altitudes (8-45 meters above bottom). In addition, larvae overall abundances were greater near the seafloor than higher in the water column, a pattern previously seen at other vent fields. Larval supply to the seafloor varied spatially throughout the vent fields but showed no distinct patterns. This study represents the first identification of larvae from the snail genus Alviniconcha, a key taxon from hydrothermal vents across the western Pacific and Indian oceans. These findings provide a critical baseline for understanding larval community dynamics and recovery potential in the Lau Basin following sedimentation associated with a volcanic disturbance. This research may play an important role in understanding the impacts of proposed deep-sea mining in the area, which has the potential to further disturb these vent fields and restrict recovery. The reproductive health of remaining adult fauna and successful re-colonization will be crucial for the persistence of dominant chemosymbiotic mollusc populations

    Centering Community Values in Marine Planning

    We created maps that visualize place-based values, reveal community perceptions about how values interact with one another, and capture visions and testimonials about why this place is important to community members; data that can inform the non-spatial dimensions of marine planning (e.g., goals, management planning). We also emphasize small steps this study took to dismantle inequitable power dynamics associated with the design, creation, and interpretation of maps that often obscure Indigenous knowledge systems. This community-led approach can be replicated in other coastal communities within the Salish Sea to understand where and why people value the ocean and support marine spatial planning harmonization across diverse scales of governance and ecology. Overall, it is critical that both the means and the ends (i.e., the process and results) of marine planning processes effectively include community values so that both ocean and community health are meaningfully protected

    St. George Tucker’s Letter to a Congressman: A Virginia Judge\u27s Critique of the Alien and Sedition Acts

    This paper examines St. George Tucker’s 1799 pamphlet, Letter to a Member of Congress; Respecting the Alien Sedition Laws, as a distinctive constitutional critique of the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798. While less famous than Thomas Jefferson\u27s and James Madison’s politically oriented writings, Tucker’s response provided a distinctly legalistic case for the unconstitutionality of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The acts were greatly threatening to Tucker, who saw them as overreaches of federal power for their attempts to subvert constitutional protections for non-citizens and freedom of speech in the name of national security. For Tucker, allowing for the freest extent of civil liberties was necessary in a representative republic, where people ought to challenge their elected officials. This critique emphasized the limitations of power rather than its applications, demonstrating Tucker’s distrust of consolidated authority that arose from his experiences in the United States’s formative decades: being tutored in the law by one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, serving in the Revolutionary War, and participating in the Annapolis convention as a delegate from Virginia. While the Alien and Sedition Acts expired after the turn of the century, Tucker, then a professor of law, published a five-volume reprinting of Sir William Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England, with particular emphasis placed on the divergence between English and American law. By employing some of the same critiques he applied to the Alien and Sedition Acts, as well as those of Jefferson and Madison, Tucker successfully managed to establish the legal framework for an oppositional constitutional tradition for opposing federal power on the grounds of limited government, preservation of states’ rights, protection for civil liberties, and belief in popular sovereignty and free political discourse.     21st-Century Syrian Composer Identity: Representation and Sustainability in Concert Music

    In this work, I explore themes of 21st-Century Syrian composer identity and Syrian music by interviewing three Syrian composers: Kinan Azmeh, Angela Boutros, and Kareem Roustom. I share what I learned from them regarding genre-crossing, “uprootedness,” and the meaning of home. I also talk about the experience of my lecture recital, in which I performed a piece written by each composer. I speak on Syrian concert music representation and sustainability by diving into themes of tradition, education, and perseverance. I conclude that curiosity and compassion are required for livingness and a meaningful quality of life

    A compilation of 1 drawing and 9 acrylic paintings that show the variety of native lilies in the Pacific Northwest and the complexities of flower parts under a microscope. A single pen drawing introduces the subject and each subsequent painting shows my improvement using acrylic paints. I wanted to grow my art skills and color theory while demonstrating the beauty I have witnessed while studying botany. The time it took to complete each piece ranged from around 3 to 6 hours
