    Greater Gig Harbor Foundation Vegetation Intern

    Through late August into September 2025, I conducted an unpaid internship with the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. Founded in 2006, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation is a nonprofit charity that works to enrich and support the communities of the greater Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula area of Washington. The organization focuses on five main pillars to support the community: arts and culture, education, environment, recreation, and social capital. It is a collaboration between members of the community and governed by a Board of Directors with the purpose of building up and supporting the residents and leaving a legacy that our communities can be proud of. In their first 15 years of operation, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation raised over $16 million which they have given back to developing the five pillars of the community. The Foundation is involved with many projects, such as environmental learning-based pre-school, a senior center, and environmental conservation work

    Sustainable Farm Education Intern

    During my summer internship with the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG) as a Sustainable Farm Education Intern, I contributed to the organization’s mission of restoring wild salmon populations through education, research, and restoration. I spent the majority of my time outdoors caring for the garden, managing weeds, tending to farm animals, and assisting with salmon monitoring. These tasks gave me hands-on experience with the interconnections between farming, water quality, and restoration while also growing my personal skills and strengths

    Across the Ages: Eco-Horror and Our Climate

    This project, in the form of a video essay, analyzes themes of climate change in the eco-horror film genre from the 1970s to more modern times to see how these films might impact the world\u27s perception of our climate over time. Generally, media and art typically reflect the times they were created in, and global warming and climate change were just coming into the political and public eye in the 1970s, and are a vast ongoing issue now. This project analyzes films from multiple categories and with multiple themes, like plants, animals, fungi, monsters, weather, capitalism, and corruption. The main films mentioned include: \u27Godzilla vs. Hedorah,\u27 \u27Shin Godzilla,\u27 \u27Frogs,\u27 \u27The Bay,\u27 \u27Silent Running,\u27 \u27The Happening,\u27 \u27The Girl with All the Gifts,\u27 \u27Soylent Green,\u27 and \u27The Day After Tomorrow.\u27 The driving research question of this project is: how can a movie inspire people to take action and put their energy towards a larger cause, like climate advocacy? In this unfinished fairytale, Lucy Hodson uses footnotes paired with characters, colors, objects, and events to revive meanings found in bestiaries and beliefs held by people during the 13th-15th centuries

    In the wake of my father’s death, I excavate my relationship to him by moving across and against time. I write through my childhood traumas, our estrangement, and the experience of his death. Those events constellate to encompass others in my life: a pivotal romantic relationship and a period of devastating mental health, as well as my father’s childhood and early adulthood. I speculate about alternative realities where things went differently. I imagine my father’s motives and desires. I layer narrative upon narrative, each lending a new hue to the story as a whole

    Stability and Composition of Calcium and Magnesium Sulfides: Implications for Mercury\u27s Unusual Sulfide Mineralogy

    Mercury’s distinct geochemistry, characterized by its low FeO content and elevated sulfur concentrations suggests that it underwent a unique differentiation process under highly reduced conditions. These conditions promote the formation of unusual sulfides, such as calcium- and magnesium-bearing phases. Understanding the stability and composition of these sulfides is crucial to reconstructing Mercury’s differentiation. To investigate this, high-pressure, high temperature (HPHT) experiments were conducted on synthetic compositions designed to simulate Mercury’s magma ocean (MMO) post core formation. These experiments replicated Mercury mantle-like conditions (1 GPa, 1500-1700 ÅãC, Δ-9.8 to -5.5) to determine sulfur concentration in the silicate melt at sulfide saturation (SCSS) and the partitioning behavior of Ca and Mg between the sulfide and silicate phase. By combining experimental data with thermodynamic modeling, this study explores how temperature, pressure, oxygen fugacity and composition influence the formation and stability of calcium- and magnesium-rich sulfides and the implications it has on Mercury’s differentiation. The combined experimental and modeling results demonstrate that calcium and magnesium partitioning, along with sulfur concentration in the silicate melt at sulfide saturation, are highly sensitive to oxygen fugacity, pressure, temperature and composition. The formation of Ca- and Mg- rich sulfides under Mercury-like conditions suggests that these phases could influence mantle crust differentiation, with sulfides in equilibrium with the low magnesium northern plain (N-LMg) terrane containing up to 12.5 wt.% Ca and 11.7 wt.% Mg. Together, these findings advance our understanding of Mercury’s unique geochemical evolution and provide a framework for exploring sulfide behavior in other reduced planetary bodies

    Less Fear, More Joy: Consent-Based Practices in the Choral Classroom

    This paper explores the potential applications of consent-based practices into choral classrooms and rehearsal spaces, and how these practices may benefit choral spaces and their performances. It looks to the work, best practices, and vocabulary developed by theatrical intimacy professionals to inform a consent-based pedagogy in choral settings. Chapter One lays the groundwork for the primary body of research of the thesis, describing the origins of intimacy direction as a craft, its goals, and its influence on arts educational spaces already, as well as its potential for application in other spaces, such as for choral directors and their ensembles. Chapter Two presents the primary ideological principles of consent-based practices and identifies their alignment with equity-centered trauma-informed practices, namely as outlined by Alex Shevrin Venet, and describes physiological impacts that trauma and stress may have on student experience and learning, as well as on singing and performance. Chapter Three contains a collection of consent-based tools and practices applicable to a choral classroom, with the goal of developing a culture of consent and autonomy among all participants. The toolkit is extended further through a case study, chronicling consent-based tools and practices implemented in a rehearsal process for Considering Matthew Shepard at Western Washington University, documenting their impacts on chorus members. Chapter Four summarizes findings and offers considerations for future study within the realm of consent-based practices, for education and beyond. Appendices containing a printable collection of tools and practices discussed are available as well, written to serve English- and Spanish-speaking students

    Cultural exchange and memories of Latin American internment 1938-1948

    The internment of Japanese Americans during World War II has been the subject of investigation through a multitude of social, environmental, and political histories. Japanese, German, and Italian internees from Latin America have not been subject to an equal amount of historical investigation. This investigation seeks to examine the experience of internees from Latin America during internment from 1938 to 1948. Internees held various cultural, linguistic, political, and socioeconomic backgrounds, yet interacted, shared cultures, exchanged ideas, and developed relationships to survive internment. The state imposed a uniform cultural hegemony upon the internees, but internees retained and maintained their cultural identity and developed new cultural practices. Cross-cultural interactions were created by internees inside internment camps all across the United States such as Crystal City, Kooskia, Missoula, Santa Fe, Kenedy, Seagoville, and Lincoln. The historiography of internment requires adjustment from the assumption that cross-cultural interactions were limited. Cross-cultural experiences were a feature of camp life, experienced by multitudes of internees as documented in oral and written histories. Historians, internment victims, and advocates benefit from the examination, and reexaminations, of what camp life looked like

    Thiolated Silk and Chitosan Blended Hydrogels

    Self-healing hydrogels have numerous biomedical applications such as wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. Thiol-silk hydrogels have been previously investigated due to the stability, durability, and high mechanical strength of silk. However, silk hydrogel scaffolding is brittle and limited in function in a 3D cell culture environment. Chitosan is a polysaccharide derived from chitin found in insect, shellfish, and crustacean exoskeletons. Chitosan has high antibacterial properties and hemostatic potential, but poor mechanical strength and low solubility at neutral pH. Blending chitosan with silk hydrogels is anticipated to improve the flexibility and mechanical properties over silk alone. The Murphy group previously developed a procedure for creating thiol-modified silk to form a hydrogel via disulfide crosslinking. Here, this strategy was adapted for chitosan, which should allow uniform crosslinking to occur between thiol-silk and thiol-chitosan. The addition of thiols to the polymers was monitored with 1H NMR spectroscopy. Other characterization techniques used were UV-Vis spectroscopy and rheology, which verified that the reaction occurred as expected and compared the properties of the combined hydrogels to the plain thiol silk or thiol chitosan gels. This work aims to produce a reproducible protocol that combines thiol-silk and thiol-chitosan into a more mechanically robust self-healing hydrogel than a gel comprised of either polymer alone
