An Exploration of Imposter Syndrome Within the WWU Chemistry Department
This 24 page digitally designed and colored zine includes quotes from interviews with WWU chemistry department students, faculty and alumni on their experiences with imposter syndrome and their relationship to research. This zine also explores themes of self-doubt, failure, comparison, rejection, work life balance, community, worth, value, success, and belonging in STEM. This project seeks to normalize these common experiences by sharing a range of perspectives to encourage reflection on our own journeys, and start a conversation within our communities.

Cross-Border Vulnerabilities in Cascadia: Regional and Business Impacts of Trade and Tariff Policies
Border regions are fundamental to the Canada-US relationship. They foster deeper integration, demonstrate resilience, and adapt to changing circumstances. Cascadia, one such region, features a well-established trade corridor and a robust cross-border network, largely driven by a “culture of collaboration.”1 Cascadia exhibits numerous elements of cohesion, including integrated business ecosystems, strong cross-border relationships, and high levels of cross-border mobility for people and goods despite the top-down influence of border and federal economic policies. However, regions like Cascadia are not immune to policy shifts or emerging challenges that could disrupt these long-standing relationships. Tariffs, heated rhetoric threatening Canadian sovereignty, and the Canadian boycott of US goods and travel in Canada are already affecting communities in Washington, particularly border communities that rely on cross-border connections

Evaluating Charcoal Resulting from Conservation Burn Piles: An Analysis of Hand Crew Practices in Remote Locations
This study investigates the effects of an alternative method of conservation burn pile design on burn temperature and charcoal conversion efficiency during forestry restoration work on San Juan Island, Washington. Forest thinning treatments at both sites generated wood debris that was processed using conservation burn pile techniques. This study explores the following two research questions: Does the addition of a single-layer sheet metal heat shield during a conservation burn pile have a significant effect on the average burn temperature? Does the addition of a single-layer sheet metal heat shield during a conservation burn pile have a significant effect on the charcoal conversion rate? Forty piles were constructed and assigned either of two treatments: (1) standard open-air pile burns and (2) heat shield piles designed with a single layer of sheet metal around the pile perimeter. Statistical analysis using the Shapiro–Wilk and Bartlett tests confirmed the assumptions of normality and equal variance for the data variables in question. Two-sample t-tests (p=0.05) were used to assess differences between pile types in mean burn temperatures and charcoal conversion rates. Results indicated no significant differences in average burn temperatures between standard and heat shield piles. Similarly, results indicate no significant difference in charcoal conversion efficiency between pile types. These findings suggest that the addition of the designed heat shield did not substantially influence burn temperatures or charcoal conversion rate under the conditions tested
DNR Aquatic Invasives Crew Member
For this internship I had the opportunity to experience my first ten weeks with a Washington Conservation Corps Crew. Our crew primarily works with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Northwest Region and focuses mostly on aquatic invasive species. The main two aquatic invasives that our crew has and will focus on are Japanese Knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) and Spartina (Sporobolus anglicus). We monitor and control these plants with a few different strategies and use heavy equipment, such as marsh masters and airboats to access the areas where they are found. We have also spent time throughout the term removing invasive Himalayan blackberry (Rubus armeniacus) both from restoration sites and to provide river access for treatments of knotweed throughout the next year. This position has allowed me to gain significant knowledge in the removal of key invasives and learn how to maintain and operate power tools and heavy machinery. We have also spent time cleaning and clearing around the public places and parks near the rivers we monitor, aiding the community. This internship has helped to bridge the gap between my classes at Western Washington University (WWU), especially Water Quality, Ecology, and GIS I, and the professional world
NSEA Community Program Intern
As a community program intern, my duties were to help lead Saturday community work parties, where volunteers come together to restore salmon habitat across Whatcom County. Interns were to guide small volunteer groups and support educational activities as well as shuttling participants and assisting the event team. These work parties involve planting native species, removing invasive plants, and other vital stewardship tasks that contribute directly to healthy stream ecosystem
Habitat for Humanity - Whatcom County Intern
My main focus throughout this internship was outlining a specification book that can be used in the future to ensure consistency throughout all of the Habitat for Humanity’s affordable housing projects. I did thorough research into the different types of formatting standards for specification books, and learned about MasterFormat and UniFormat, both of which are licensed by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI). After talking with Virginia about the formatting options, we decided to start outlining sections for the specification book following the MasterFormat standards
Kitsap County Department of Community Development GIS Intern
As the 2025 GIS Intern for the Kitsap County Department of Community I have used ArcGIS Pro along side department tools such as SmartGov and Parcel Search to support local environmental decisions by updating the existing county wetlands GIS dataset. Working with the department GIS analyst, we created a better record of wetlands throughout the area with the goal of improving accessibility and usability for future planning. In updating wetlands from non-digital sources, we improved the existing attribution scheme to better reflect the accuracy and shortcoming of wetland data in Kitsap. In addition to improving the wetland dataset, I assisted with the updating of the department FAQ page in order to improve community outreach. I also was provided with the opportunity to meet with leaders from various other projects such as the Abandoned and Derelict Vessel program, the Noxious Weeds Program, and Kitsap Natural Recovery Asset Management Program. These meetings exposed me to the various ways GIS tools can be implemented to promote environmental recovery and justice
Whatcom Humane Society Wildlife Rehab Intern
From March 22nd to June 12th, I interned at the Whatcom Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, located off Mission Road in Bellingham, Washington. The center is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured, orphaned, and sick native wildlife. During this 13-week internship, I worked roughly 30 hours per week through three 10-hour shifts, on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. My role was hands-on and physically demanding, involving a wide range of responsibilities that included assisting with animal intakes, triage, daily care routines, medication administration, feeding, enclosure cleaning, and the release of rehabilitated wildlife. Throughout this internship, I was able to gain professional-level experience in wildlife rehabilitation, enhance my ability to work safely and compassionately with wild animals, learn proper animal handling and care techniques, and develop strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills. This internship prepared me for the physical and emotional demands of working in a fast-paced, high-stress environment dedicated to animal welfare and conservation
Eco Analysts Inc. Env Toxic Lab Intern
During my internship at the Port Gamble Environmental Laboratory (Eco Analysts, Inc.), I supported a range of environmental toxicology projects focused on evaluating the ecological risks associated with pollutants in aquatic systems. These projects aimed to provide scientifically sound data to meet both regional and national regulatory requirements, most notably under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) for effluent monitoring and state-level sediment management programs
