    The Impact of Remote Learning in the Wake of COVID19

    With COVID19, the University of Akron and many other universities had to adjust how they taught students. They went from primarily in-person classes to primarily remote classes as well as hybrid classes. This project is meant to determine how students at the university were affected by this change regarding their overall satisfaction with remote learning. Students at the University of Akron were surveyed in September 2023. The questions regarded demographics, location during the semesters (from spring 2020 to current), impact on study habits, impact on grades, impact on social life, satisfaction with courses, and general thoughts on online learning. Questions regarding impact on study habits, impact on grades, impact on social life, and satisfaction with courses were answered using a Likert scale. There were three open ended questions regarding general thoughts on online learning. Other questions were multiple choice with “other” as an option. It was found that students were generally unhappy with taking online classes, though a not insignificant amount of students either reported being affected little or being very satisfied with taking online classes

    Using Soil and Forest Type to Map Bedrock in Nemo, South Dakota

    Bedrock mapping can be used to locate economic deposits, assess natural disaster (e.g., mass wasting) risk, and decipher the geologic history of a region. This study examines a site at Nemo, South Dakota to assess whether two contrasting types of bedrock produce different soil that result in different types of forest cover. Although bedrock varied, other soil forming factors were uniform. Within an approximately 1 km2 area, quartzite and metagabbro bedrock, ponderosa pine and quaking aspen forests were mapped. The soil above the quartzite bedrock is thinner and sandier and is dominated by ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). In contrast, the soil above the metagabbro bedrock is thicker, mostly clay-sized and is dominated by quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) and contains irises (Iris germanica). The increased CEC, phosphorus content, and clay content of the metagabbro-derived soil may account for the corresponding quaking aspen forest as aspens require more nutrients than ponderosa pine. Ponderosa pine is more tolerant of nutrient deficient conditions such as the quartzite-derived thin, sandy soil. This research indicates that because bedrock type influences soil properties which in-turn influence forest type, that forest type can be an additional tool in mapping bedrock contacts

    Gender Differences in Mind Wandering Intentionality

    My fellow research assistants and I attempted to replicate Seli and colleagues’ (2016) original study that first distinguished between unintentional and intentional mind wandering. Additionally, I conducted my own research study regarding gender differences in mind wandering intentionality. I hypothesized that men would report higher levels of unintentional mind wandering than women. Participants were randomly assigned to two conditions of the sustained attention to response task (SART): difficult and easy. Using data collected from 29 undergraduate psychology students, we validated that the difficult SART is harder than the easy SART, we found no significant difference in overall mind wandering rates in both SART conditions, and we found a significant main effect of mind wandering type. However, we were unable to replicate a significant interaction between mind wandering type and condition that the original researchers had found. I analyzed the same data for my supplemental study and found no difference in unintentional mind wandering between men and women. I found that men had higher variability in the unintentional probe response, which may be notable when considering gender differences in mind wandering intentionality. Future studies should be conducted to identify possible gender differences and variations in mind wandering

    Leveraging Ansible to Locate Network Devices

    This report demonstrates the collection of Layer 2 and Layer 3 network device information using Ansible and explains the limitations identified performing such a procedure. Maintaining dynamic documentation of network information using automation would benefit network security with improvements to attack surface visibility and cyberattack incident response time. After the procedure was conducted, it was determined that Ansible alone is incapable of producing the intended information base due to the way it handles numerical variables. This report identifies limitations in Ansible’s ability to manipulate large quantities of network information and necessitates further discussion regarding what Ansible can and should be used for

    Infinite Archives, Infinite Possibilities: Learning Research and Databases with Archive of our Own

    This article will discuss the importance of acknowledging the information practices of subcultural groups within library instruction and fostering an inclusive learning environment with the implementation of a workshop by comparing research databases with the popular fanfiction website, Archive of Our Own. By incorporating AO3 into library instruction, students’ interests and prior experiences were engaged by utilizing the principles of subcultural capital. The workshop utilized students’ knowledge of information searching from their personal lives and their interests to highlight similarities with academic research using examples such as filters, keywords, and author searching. This allowed students to develop skills to search precisely for materials in a familiar environment. Further, the success of the workshop demonstrates how librarians can incorporate fan’s informational behaviors, and access practices into instructional content about research and database usage, making research less intimidating and more accessible to students

    This Sounds Like an Episode of The X-Files: Analyzing How Twitter Users Interpreted the COVID-19 Pandemic through the Lens of Sci-Fi Television

    While science fiction has a long-standing habit of predicting future technologies, The X-Files’ focus on anatomical manipulations as a means of control resulted in a plotline that inadvertently mirrored the COVID-19 pandemic which occurred a few years later. The proximity to such a similar, real-world situation resulted in some audiences interpreting their own experiences through the framework of sci-fi television, demonstrating that the discursive environment crafted through the text of The X-Files is continually applicable to contemporary anxieties and paranoia even after the show finished airing. In this article, I argue that The X-Files’ critiques of real-world abuses of powers and the running themes of paranoia and governmental distrust gave audiences a framework they could use to negotiate their anxieties, resulting in the series being used to both defend and reject COVID-19 protocols by sci-fi fans on Twitter. In this study, I utilize a thematic analysis of these tweets to examine how audiences perceived the implications of the show’s text and their lived experiences by using the lens of science fiction to contextualize the pandemic
