    Digitizing the Photographs of Black Photographers Horace and Evelyn Stewart, 1897-1978

    The purpose of this two-year project is to digitize and make available online for research and discovery the photographs of Horace and Evelyn Stewart from The University of Akron Archives & Special Collections. The Stewarts were a husband-and-wife team of professional Black photographers who owned and operated Stewart’s Photo Studio in Akron, Ohio. Their photographs visually document the rich history of the Black community in Akron, northeast Ohio, and beyond, from 1897 to 1978. The collection consists of 37 boxes containing approximately 46,000 historic black and white and color photographic prints and negatives that capture Black personalities and families; religious, social, and cultural organizations; and civil rights. The grant will allow us to hire a vendor to digitize the entire collection of prints and negatives, a part-time temporary staff member to manage the project, and student assistants to create metadata for the images and upload them to our digital repository

    Managing Inventory With a Database

    Large commercial companies often use warehouses to store and organize their product inventory. However, manually keeping track of inventory through physical means can be a tedious process and is at risk for a variety of potential issues. It is very easy for records to be inaccurate or duplicated, especially if large reorganizations are undertaken, as this can cause issues such as duplicate product ID numbers. Therefore, it was decided that an inventory management system utilizing a SQL database should be created. The system needed to have capabilities including allowing the entry of product information, the ability to search database records based on attributes, the ability to update product attributes, and the ability to delete records, ideally with a confirmation prompt. Additionally, the system needed to have measures in place to prevent duplicate or redundant records from being entered. Expected business benefits from this program included being able to retrieve inventory records at increased speed, being able to reorganize and update product information quickly and more efficiently, and being able to avoid potentially costly errors from conflicting or redundant records

    Smart Dog Door

    With modern life getting busier and more complex, many have turned to autonomous assistance for taking care of pets. The objective of this project is to design and prototype a device and application that will allow only certain dogs to enter and exit through a dog door while making the owners aware of their dog\u27s activity. The dog door will utilize wireless communication from the dog to the door to control the status of the door’s lock and update the database that will send updates to the application. The application will keep track of when the dog enters and exits the door and present a photo of the dog entering and exiting the door. The locking system will keep the door securely shut unless a pet is entering or exiting, which will ensure that unwanted animals will not enter the home

    Robot-Based 3D Printing

    Details of a large-format 3D printer created to print experimental materials, test multi-axis print techniques, and quickly print large objects. The printer consists of a 7-axis robotic arm and pellet extruder, which are controlled by a PC. Experimental materials such as recycled polymers or carbon-fiber reinforced materials can be easily tested with the pellet format of the extruder. The printer can perform different printing techniques and can be used to experiment with material properties when using these techniques with different polymers. The print surface is around 5 times larger than the average commercial 3D printer, and the robotic arm provides a much higher print height. The pellet extruder is controlled by a custom microcontroller interface that is pre-loaded with all extrusion instructions for the print. This microcontroller is commanded by the robot arm controller to synchronize the movements and print operations. The PC compiles commands using RoboDK software, which combines G-Code from a 3D slicer and transforms it into appropriate robot and extrusion commands

    Classification Models Using Python In Industrial/Organizational Psychology

    Companies, industries, and places of business use artificial intelligence and statistics to predict the characteristics of their employees and staff. Data collected from these individuals is also used to make decisions about them regarding their work life, such as promotions, salaries, or within the hiring process. Two models that are commonly used throughout the field of psychology and specifically in industrial/organizational psychology are the linear regression and the logistic regression. Examining different classification models using Python shows the potential that there may be different models that are more accurate in their predictions of employee success, including a Random Forest model and a LightGBM model, which is short for gradient boosting model. The comparison of these models provides evidence suggesting that the Random Forest model and the LightGBM model predict employee productivity more accurately than a traditional linear regression model or a logistic regression model

    Custom Mobility Aid - Exoskeleton

    Injuries to the spinal cord can cause major mobility deficits, paralysis, and even death. Our client is an adult male who has suffered fractures to the C4 and C5 vertebrae resulting in partial nerve damage and loss of mobility in the lower extremities, primarily on the left side. He complains of significant loss of function and frequent falls due to an inability to fully pick-up his left foot and hold his hip in flexion during swing phase of gait. He describes his walking as a stuttered walk and frequently complains that his left foot drags and drops during steps. The client\u27s physical therapist has also discussed the issues with his gait being due to the cross-over of his left foot during walking and lack of control in his hip, knee, and ankle. The client currently uses a cane to walk, however, is finding this an insufficient solution as it does not improve his gait. By the end of the academic year, the goal is to design and demonstrate a solution that will provide smooth walking, better positioning of the left leg and foot during swing phase to eliminate early foot contact with the ground that is causing frequent stumbling

    Mobile Robot Adhesion Methodology and Development of an Automatous Robot Module

    Due to the increasing availability of space travel as not only a scientific exploration but a commercial exploration, there is a need for an onsite repair station that can be deployed in the event of aircraft maintenance, damage, or failure. We have been tasked with researching and creating a prototype of an automatous robot that can be attached to a spacecraft body, move along the surface while avoiding obstacles, scan for damage, 3D print a repair piece, and then make the repair, all without the need of direct human input. Our team, as will be discussed throughout, was tasked with developing the mobile robot unit that will attach and traverse the spacecraft hull using adaptive path planning procedures. In this report, we will discuss the choices made when determining the project needs of our robot. Most of our project revolved around research and development into several different variations of automatous robots which include but are not limited to gecko feet, tank treads, and an attached arm. The focus of our study was to determine the possible use cases for attachment methods, which mainly revolved around the use of gecko tape – a biomimicry-designed tape that can attach to surfaces when pulled into tension, much like how a gecko pulls itself onto upright surfaces

    Judicial Preferences and Aggrandizement Effects

    Scholars increasingly portray the Supreme Court as power hungry and self-aggrandizing. This aggrandizement literature, though, lacks a robust causal theory. This essay argues that judicial aggrandizement is not the product of a power-maximizing agenda but a function of judicial preferences and legal background conditions. Aggrandizement occurs in cases where legal background conditions do not align with judicial policy preferences and the justices assert power to create their preferred policy outcomes. This theory has significant prescriptive and normative implications. For example, counterintuitively, this essay shows that more judicial aggrandizement could be a sign of a healthier institution under some conditions

    This study discusses the perceived negative effects of variants (C677T and A1298C) of the methylenetetrahydrofolate (MTHFR) gene on male and female fertility and fetal development, as well as the potential for nutrition changes to aid in reversing these negative effects. This research project was completed in order to discuss the possible association with and connection between nutrition and fertility in both male and female individuals who have either of the two most common MTHFR gene polymorphisms, 677C\u3eT and 1298A\u3eC. These two polymorphisms are of particular interest because they are associated with the most decreased activity of the MTHFR enzyme. After the review of numerous scholarly articles, it is still unclear the impact that an MTHFR genetic polymorphism may or may not have on an individual\u27s everyday life, and its contributions to current or preexisting health conditions remain unclear. It is relatively simple to see that a majority of the clinical tests and research pertaining to the MTHFR gene and the issues it potentially causes shows mixed results and conclusions. Methylenetetrahydrofolate gene polymorphisms are becoming increasingly common in the general population, so it is difficult to determine correlation verses causation when considering its exact influence on human health
