Improved Portable Back Pain Relief Device with User Interface
The objective of this project is to design and create a massage system that is user interactive, portable, safe, efficient, and comfortable. The system should allow for user feedback from an outside peripheral such as a phone to be able to modify the system. Some challenges facing the implementation of such a system include: ensuring the product can withstand substantial force without breaking or malfunctioning while simultaneously being light enough for a consumer to carry without difficulty, engineering the massage heads to be able to move in multiple different motion types, creating the software that can control the device, and implementing a way for the user to easily power the system

The Meaning of Collections for the Identity of University Libraries: The Document Concept as a Tool for Understanding
Historically, university libraries have been defined by the collections they housed and it was the collection that formed the basis of their identity and organization. However, societal developments have shifted this focus, leading to significant changes in both the content and conditions of these collections. What was once predominantly characterized by printed materials has now transitioned to primarily electronic resources. This paper explores how the concept of documents can be utilized to examine the identity of contemporary university libraries. Specifically, it employs David Levy’s notion of documents as ‘talking things,’ examining their relationship to various genres and rhythms. Furthermore, the material, social, and mental dimensions of documents are also considered
The Living Document
This physical interactive art piece of thesis research in progress aims to deepen comprehension of information behavior in clinical contexts, where the contemporary medical record, with its increasing digital properties such as open record access for patients, can be viewed as an entity that both listens and influences. The art piece sheds light on the complex dynamics of truth within clinical environments, where patients and healthcare professionals might selectively disclose or withhold information, aiming to protect both patient, clinician and the information itself. Set within a small, dimly lit room, the exhibit features eight aged medical records, each inscribed with the phrase “Open record.” When participants open the records, they are met with 30-second audio clips where voice actors reenact clinicians’ reflections and experiences on open record access in pediatric psychiatry, spoken directly from within the documents
The Relationship Between Music Educators and Stress
The goal of this project is to gather information from currently practicing music educators in a range of specialties about the relationship between their working lives and personal lives. Does their working life affect them at a level where they cannot decompress? Do they have a healthy relationship with their career and manage their workload well? Information will be gathered about the conditions surrounding educators to gather context for why they have the work-life balance they have described. After measuring and reporting how music educators are balancing their careers against their personal lives, potential solutions will be described to help educators who are overwhelmed. These solutions will be gathered from current research into stress management and by sharing the responses of music educators who aren’t overwhelmed
Digitizing Historical Resources on the Ohio & Erie Canal
Louis Baus, photographer, shot numerous scenes along the Ohio & Erie, Miami & Erie, and the connecting feeder canals. This collection of over 400 photo negatives portrays a sense of canal life during the late 1800s to early 1900s. Found in this collection are images of canal boats, crew and passengers, as well as various locks, businesses and homes along the canal ways
Revisiting Robert Pagès: Documents and Culture
An introduction to the life and work of Robert Pagès (1919–2007), French social psychology researcher and theorist of documentation. From 1946 to 1948 Pagès was a student in the program in documentation directed by Suzanne Briet that later became the Institut National des Techniques de Documentation (INTD). A 1947 thesis was published in 1948 as an article entitled “Transformations documentaires et milieu culturel” (Documentary transformations and cultural context). It received little attention until recently. The article, now reprinted and translated, examines the rise of new media and how they have largely displaced lived experience and bookish knowledge in a society that has become increasingly planned and coordinated. A notable feature of this article is his distinction between unique, particular objects, which he called “autodocuments,” and specimens that are representative of whatever group they are specimens of. A second thesis of classification was published in 1955 as Problèmes de classification culturelle et documentaire. Pagès founded and directed a laboratory for social psychology. He developed an indexing language (named CODOC) with interesting syntactic and notational characteristics for materials collected in the laboratory. Symposium; Gender, Health, and the Constitution: Hysteria Redux: Gaslighting in the Age of Covid
This article addresses the relationship among hysteria, gaslighting, and gender during the Covid pandemic in the political and public-health messaging about Covid. It analyzes the U.S. public health messaging in the age of Covid, explaining how individualism, gender, and gaslighting have shaped the public response to the virus and negatively affected public health. In explaining the poor U.S. public health outcomes during Covid, the article evaluates the role of disinformation about vaccines, the “feminization” of masking, and the “vax and relax” public mantra, which suggested that those who did not relax were perhaps a bit hysterical. Finally, the article considers how gaslighting occurs in the context of dismissing the potential long-term dangers of Covid infections and reinfections
Considering Extended High-Frequency Audiometry as a Screening Tool for Auditory Processing Disorder
The purpose of this research project is to describe Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) and its background and etiology, signs and symptoms, and treatment options. APD is an auditory disorder that affects the central nervous system. Individuals with auditory processing disorders are able to detect sounds at normal hearing levels and pass a standard hearing test, but struggle with higher order auditory skills such as auditory discrimination, binaural processing, including understanding in the presence of background noise, and temporal processing (ASHA, 2005). A full auditory processing test battery is time consuming, and many audiologists are not skilled in administering typical APD screening procedures, however, there is growing evidence that extended high-frequency audiometry can be an effective screening tool. Specifically, the report highlights this screening option for APD and determines whether extended high-frequency audiometry could be added to normal testing procedures for children in a clinical setting. To perform extended high-frequency audiometry, tones of high frequency between 8,000 and 20,000 Hz are presented to determine if they are detected by the patient. If the tones are not detected, or elevated, it may suggest the child needs to be evaluated for APD. The research project examines the possibility of implementing this comprehensive pure tone testing broadly in audiologic settings but recognize cost, accessibility of equipment and time may impact the viability of this screening option. APD being directly correlated with extended high-frequency audiometry testing could lead to greater accessibility for screenings, more appropriate referrals, and earlier diagnosis of APD in children
Assessing Household GAC Water Filters for PFAS Removal from Private Drinking Water Wells
This research paper delves into the efficacy of a typical household water filter in removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a concerning class of chemicals prevalent in water sources. PFAS, known for their persistence and potential health risks, have prompted regulatory actions such as the Third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 3) and the National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) by the U.S. EPA. While municipal water utilities are subject to regulatory oversight, individuals relying on private wells face challenges in ensuring water quality.
The study employs a model to assess the performance of a SAMSUNG Ice and Water Refrigerator Filter in reducing PFAS concentrations. Utilizing pilot-scale data and an open-source pore and surface diffusion model, the filter\u27s effectiveness was evaluated against Hazard Index thresholds and Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs). Results indicate that the filter maintains PFAS concentrations below regulatory thresholds throughout its recommended lifespan of 300 gallons, demonstrating its efficacy in mitigating PFAS contamination.
Furthermore, the study addresses the challenges faced by private well owners, emphasizing the need for accessible and affordable water quality testing solutions. Public education on PFAS risks and the importance of water filtration technology is highlighted to empower consumers to make informed decisions about their drinking water. The research underscores the significance of effective filtration technologies and regulatory measures in ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water, particularly for individuals reliant on private wells
