    Porous Bearing Research Rig

    Our team has decided to continue the research of fluid bearings, specifically, that of the journal and porous bearing. This will continue off of research currently being done at the University of Akron by graduate student Elizabeth Clifford who has developed a mathematical model for a porous bearing. Our job will be to create a testing rig that will be able to either prove or disprove this model. To do this, the rig will need to be able to take measurements of temperature and pressure at key areas within the bearing. It will also need to be readily capable of performing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to further study the fluid behavior and flow within the bearing. By the end of the project, the final product will be a rig capable of being used by other researchers down the line to further delve into the benefits of porous bearings and possible improvements that can be made to further enhance it’s capabilities

    Declining Approval in the Supreme Court of the United States

    American citizens are granted several freedoms by the Bill of Rights in the United States Constitution. The First Amendment established protections for the rights of assembly, petition, press, religion, and speech, the lattermost of which enables people to express ideas without fear of suppression from their government. Therefore, the general public is empowered to hold various opinions about the institutions that wield authority over them. Measuring public opinion is a crucial endeavor to those in power, as such work yields intuition for how different branches of government are perceived over time. The federal judiciary is helmed by the Supreme Court of the United States, comprised of eight associate justices and one chief justice. Those who sit on the Supreme Court are not directly chosen in an election, insulating their jurisdiction in comparison to the President and Congress. Despite historical trends, approval in the Court is undergoing a drastic decline. In this study, I explain changing attitudes of Americans concerning political issues relative to notable verdicts by the Supreme Court through examination of previous studies pertaining to judiciary approval and interviews with registered voters on the subject, gathering evidence in support of several causal relationships which explain the phenomenon occurring

    Our project deals with a common problem that is encountered with satellites in earth orbit or beyond. It is very common in space for there to be small collisions between satellites and foreign space debris, and it takes a lot of time and money to send a person out to repair the damage caused by the collision. Our goal is to develop a way to perform these repairs autonomously. We plan to develop a way to scan a satellite or spacecraft hull for damage using a robot and then repair the damage while still maintaining the material specifications required for spacecraft in orbit. Once we develop this idea, we plan to provide the Space Force with our findings so that they can use our project in future spacecraft

    Adjustment Issues in First-Year College Students

    The transition from high school to college marks a critical period of adjustment for students, often accompanied by various stressors affecting mental health. Entering adulthood can be a time of identity crisis and emotional vulnerability, and beginning college only adds to existing pressure. This literature review explores multifaceted aspects of first-year college student adjustment, the impact of COVID-19 on universities, predictors of adjustment, and interventions. Emotional, social, and academic adjustment are intertwined with each other, and all significantly influence well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated challenges, leading to heightened stress and decreased social interactions. Establishing connections and support from peers are crucial for social adjustment and decreased loneliness. Not only did depression and anxiety rates increase during the pandemic, but studies are showing a continuing increase in mental health issues and adjustment problems post-pandemic. Factors promoting positive adjustment include sleep, exercise, limited social media use, and parental support. Interventions like mental health screenings and campus support services can facilitate smoother transitions to college life and manage the mental distress of students. Despite certain limitations such as convenience sample or self-report bias along with research gaps regarding intersectionality, the research supports that understanding the complexities of adjustment and implementing proactive strategies are vital for promoting student well-being in higher education

While the project is very open for the team to build the design from the ground up, there are some constraints that we must incorporate into our design. The constraints are as follows: the design must work in zero gravity conditions, it must be fully autonomous, and the process must be repeatable

    The role of judicial officials to release independent decisions remains a vital component to the very existence of the judicial branch. However, due to disagreement over various individual court’s interpretation of their respective state constitution, numerous state legislatures have begun to introduce bills that significantly weaken state judiciaries. Many of these bills have statutes that lower the burden for judicial impeachment, remove jurisdiction over subject matter, change the election system for judicial officials, reduce the resources of the court, and introduce politics into seemingly non-partisan matters. Influenced by the passage of bills that weaponize state legislatures against the courts, this study attempts to discover the reasoning for these bills, the political motivations of the lawmakers that construct these bills, and the correlation between partisanship and the likelihood a legislature proposes bills with the potential to weaken the judiciary

    The Brainstem as a Conserved System for Consciousness: Integrating Phylogeny, Neurology, and Psychology

    Historically, scientists and physicians have taken a corticocentric view of consciousness, emphasizing the need for a cortex in producing the conscious experience. The preserved consciousness observed in hydranencephalic children and decorticated rats suggests that some form of consciousness may be produced by a subcortical network. The brainstem, a phylogenetically conserved brain system, could serve as the major integrative network to produce this form of consciousness—referred to as ‘affective consciousness’, the evolutionary antecedent to the reflective consciousness allowing humans to reflect on experiences. The functional integration of the brainstem with the amygdala, motor network, and other subcortical structures provides the architecture necessary to support an affective state of consciousness by which instinctual-emotional goal-directed behavior is produced. This subcortical system operates by what Merker (2007) calls the selection triangle—an interface between bodily actions (action selection), the world (target selection), and personal motivation—thus producing action through integration. Accordingly, a form of consciousness may persist in the absence of the cortex, such as that observed in the persistent vegetative state (PVS). As such, it is helpful to distinguish between affective and reflective consciousness, inasmuch as this distinction would have ethical implications in treatment of those with disorders of consciousness

    Corrosion Inhibitors: Mitigating the Degradation of Rebar

    Our conjecture was twofold: first, that two compounds historically used as food preservatives could act as environmentally friendly inhibitors against rebar corrosion, and second, that molecular properties have a quantifiable influence on inhibition efficiency (%IE). To evaluate the two compounds, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization was used to determine corrosion current density (icorr) and %IE. The “green” inhibitor candidates included sodium metabisulfite and ascorbic acid, which yielded maximum %IE values of -123900% and 91%, respectively. Results indicated that sodium metabisulfite is not a suitable inhibitor, while ascorbic acid showed potential to extend reinforced concrete’s design life without posing health or environmental risks. Next, relationships between experimentally determined %IE and molecular properties determined using density functional theory were represented graphically. Linear fitting was then used to obtain R2 values, which classified the strength of each relationship. The strongest correlations existed within a group of four compounds, which shared structural similarities. Electronic energy, Egap, dipole moment, and polarizability exhibited directional trends with respective R2 values of 0.118 (decreasing), 0.601 (decreasing), 0.122 (increasing), and 0.809 (increasing). These findings imply the existence of such relationships, suggesting potential for refining future corrosion inhibitor research
