    Teacher Perceptions of Don\u27t Say Gay Bills

    For this project, I will research teacher perceptions of bills restricting the discussion of LGBTQ matters in the classroom. In Florida, a “don’t say gay” bill is already in effect. Since the bill in Florida was passed, 22 other states have proposed similar legislation. I will conduct a literature review on this topic. I will also interview teachers working in various northeast Ohio school districts. I will review the information from the literature review as well as the information given to me by the teachers in the interviews to create insight into the effect of these bills on teachers. I will draw conclusions from my research to determine the potential impact of bills restricting classroom discussion of LGBTQ matters on teachers

    Ambient Temperature Strength Degradation of a Ceramic Matrix Composite Due to Solid Particle Erosion

    Solid particle erosion (SPE) is an issue for aircraft exposed to hard, fine particles, such as sand or dust, that can be ingested into the engine at a high velocity without reaching their melting point, resulting in material removal. SPE can be attributed to the intake of particulate debris from the runway or from airborne particulates. The cumulative mass loss from SPE damage affects the structural integrity and performance of the engine; however, its effects on ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), that are being employed in the aerospace industry, are not well understood in literature. The limited SPE research studies that have been published are primarily based on woven silicon carbide (SiC)-based CMC architectures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the effects of ambient temperature SPE damage on the mechanical properties of a SiC-based cross-ply laminate CMC system. The effects of erodent particle velocity and cumulative erodent particle mass were quantified with respective to the damage morphology and retained tensile strength

    Development of a Modular Solar Shingle

    The goal of this research project is to design, prototype, and test an array of solar roofing shingles using print-in-place principles using an automated circuitry printer and 3D printed components. The shingle shall emphasize ease of installation, maintenance, and affordability in contrast to the current market for solar roofing. The design goal is to develop a manufacturing process to be more cost and time effective than current manufacturing techniques. The prototype will consist of a roof with this system, demonstrating the durability, assembly, and ease of installation. Finally, material/design suitability will be implemented in conjunction with postprocessing techniques to create a fair comparison to current market competitors in solar power generation

    Autonomous Damage and Structure Scanning Drone

    Remote damage analysis plays a crucial role in lowering the risk associated with human presence at dangerous sites. This project focuses on developing a system for remote structural examination using photogrammetric techniques and analysis. The system utilizes a drone equipped with cameras for photogrammetry, and LiDARs for navigation. This setup can enable efficient structural model generation with the collection of images from multiple points. A novel structural analysis is performed to detect potential damage or points of failure in the structure. Key components include a teleoperated drone, a software pipeline for photogrammetric analysis, collision protection mechanisms, and a user interface. The proposed design aims to improve remote structural assessment, enhancing safety and efficiency in hazardous environments

    Infant Molds for Cleft Deformities

    Cleft lip and palate are very common birth defects where the roof of a baby\u27s mouth and lip do not form properly while in the womb. Babies born with cleft lip or palate can undergo surgery after going through a process to make the initial gap smaller through incrementally smaller, retainer-like appliances. We will be trying to find a way to improve the pre-surgery process by implementing 3D printing. We will be performing this research for a craniofacial orthodontist at Akron Children\u27s Hospital. We hope that our success will lead to a decrease in the amount of time spent making the appliances and a decrease in the frequency of appointments for patients. We will be implementing a standard design process for medical devices and our knowledge of biomedical engineering to accomplish these goals

    An Epigenetically Driven Relationship Between Parental PTSD and Inflammatory Disease in Offspring: A Proposal

    Could a combat veteran\u27s horrific experiences in early-2000s Afghanistan have a direct, biological impact on his or her now-adult daughter\u27s risk of a heart attack later in her life? This concept would have been unapologetically mocked a mere twenty years ago, and it has only been in the past decade that the new field of epigenetics has revealed a distinct possibility for this event to actually take place—for parents\u27 experiences to profoundly influence the biology of their children. The major objective of this research project is to argue for the legitimacy of this theoretical phenomenon by discussing the latest data regarding PTSD\u27s interaction with the epigenome, the various epigenetic markers associated with PTSD, the numerous health detriments that have been observed in conjunction with these specific biomarkers, and the reported heritability of these epigenomic alterations. In conclusion, this manuscript will establish the foundation for this hypothetical event to be cogently argued for while simultaneously calling for more real, concrete studies to be conducted on the subject matter to evaluate its biological validity and potential effect on human health

    The Nineteenth Amendment and \u3ci\u3eDobbs\u3c/i\u3e

    There was a surge in legal scholarship around the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution—the Woman Suffrage Amendment—leading up to its centennial in August 2020. But this scholarly interest around the Nineteenth peaked two years before the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization in June 2022. This paper revisits the Nineteenth Amendment in light of the Court’s decision in Dobbs. It argues that the Nineteenth should be understood as a ban on sex discrimination that extends beyond the right to vote. The Amendment expands the scope of women’s citizenship as a matter of federal constitutional law by prohibiting legislation which denies or abridges a woman’s right to self-govern. And it situates the power to enforce this prohibition in Congress—not state legislatures—as a matter of federalism. The paper traces the historical understanding of voting as self-government, and self-government as the means by which a citizen operationalizes self-determination. Suffragists understood self-government to include self-ownership and voluntary motherhood. A feminist constitutionalism would incorporate the Nineteenth’s capacious, seventy-two-year history into a robust reading of the Amendment. Such a reading provides support to courts that choose to invalidate legislation denying or abridging not only political but also reproductive self-determination. Although such a reading is unlikely to be embraced by the current Supreme Court’s conservative majority, it should be introduced into judicial discourse for use by future courts in reasoning around women’s reproductive liberty

    Do Androids Dream of Bad TV?: Un/originality in Neil Burger’s Voyagers

    Critics did not take kindly to Neil Burger’s Voyager (2021). On Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored a dismal 25%, and the consensus is that it’s a trip best not taken: “It has a game cast and a premise ripe with potential, but Voyagers drifts in familiar orbit rather than fully exploring its intriguing themes.” This article seeks neither to reclaim the film as an unjustly neglected cinematic masterpiece nor to assert its importance in the canon of dystopian works. Rather, it treats Voyagers as a test case for exploring our own critical investment in the genre. Our aims are twofold. First, we argue that the film speaks to the dystopian genre’s fundamental distrust of future generations to make the best decisions. It effectively exposes the central irony that we presume to know best though we had signally failed to do right by our planet in the first place. Secondly, we reveal how unoriginal work can still point to new ways forward. By the end of the film, the Humanitas mission is back on course, following Zac’s (Fionn Whitehead) demise. Sela (Lily-Rose Depp) is surely right to wonder, to Christopher (Tye Sheridan), how they should ensure that mutiny doesn’t recur. The short answer? They can’t—and they probably shouldn’t. The capacity for events, like those we witness in Voyagers, to recur—and many times over too—is at least partially responsible for the dystopian genre’s appeal and it contributes to the genre’s persistent ethical ruminations. This essay advances scholarship by suggesting that even the most derivative of cinema can offer profound insights into our world, in this case, how democracies work

    Fanbinding, Preservation, and Local Archives: Un-Digitizing Trends and Media Ownership in Fandom Information Practices

    Fanbinding, or the practice of printing fanworks into books, creates a physical format of primarily digital content. My previous research found that a common motivation for fanbinders to participate in this craft was preservation of their personal access to beloved fanworks, which echoes broader trends of controlling media through local physical archives. This implies an understanding of the ephemeral nature of digital content and a subsequent fear of losing access to their favorite content without their intervention. Fanbinding creates a physical copy of a fanwork that cannot disappear due to platform/author takedowns or server failures, thereby establishing the fanbinders’ ownership of that story. This article discusses the results of a short survey circulated to fanbinders on the topics of preservation and media ownership in relation to fanbinding practices to establish links between fandom practices and broader trends in media ownership and physical media collection-building

    Utilizing Metadata from Heterogeneous Sources within the Framework of the JVMG and GOLEM Projects to Identify Patterns in Anime-based Fandoms on AO3

    This paper offers an overview of the first step in the data alignment and joint research efforts between the Japanese Visual Media Graph (JVMG) and the Graphs and Ontologies for Literary Evolution Models (GOLEM) projects. Focusing on fully or in-part anime based fandoms in the Archive of Our Own (AO3) data in the GOLEM knowledge graph we connected 534 fandoms with 1,734 anime works from the JVMG knowledge graph. The fanfiction publication numbers and dates for these fandoms were then analyzed in conjunction with the various metadata available on the corresponding anime works, such as release date, genre, content rating and user rating. Fixed effects modeling was employed to identify a positive effect of anime releases on fanfiction publication numbers. Furthermore, individual graphs of the top four hundred fandoms’ fanfiction publication numbers over time overlayed with the corresponding anime release dates were also analyzed manually to identify a number of distinct patterns, as well as groups of fandoms for which the invigorating effect of anime releases on fanfiction publication numbers could be clearly identified
