    Document Productivity Cycle (Study case of Samudera Raksa Ship Museum)

    The study aims to discuss document productivity in the case of the Samudera Raksa Ship Museum. To answer this, the researchers made a productivity document study based on (1) Blasius Sudarsono\u27s axiom, which states that In the beginning, it was the human will to express what he thought and/or felt; (2) Sudarsono\u27s thoughts regarding documents as processes and products; (3) Lund’s concept of document creation; (4) Sabine Roux\u27s thoughts on the rhizome concept in the document productivity process; and (5) the concept of museum communication by Yudhawasthi. Based on these theoretical frameworks, an analysis of the document productivity in the case of the Samudra Raksa Ship Museum is outlined with the formulation of research questions: (1) Is the document productivity a cycle? (2) How is the document productivity cycle in the case of the Samudra Raksa Ship Museum? This research was a qualitative study and research data were obtained through an in-depth interview process with three research informants, literature search, and field observation. The informants are (1) curator of the Samudera Raksa Ship Museum and Borobudur Temple area management, (2) the leader of Digital Technology Development of the Samudera Raksa Ship Museum, and (3) a former crew of the Samudera Raksa Ship. From the mapping, the researcher found the dimensions that reflect a cycle: 1. document creation stage where knowledge, the object/message/document as well as the media and technology are used to produce. 2. The product produced does not stop as a work, but humans can continue to interpret and reinterpret it, thereby producing knowledge and/or knowledge. Then, 3. returning to the initial cycle, namely creation, which drives the next creation process. 4. All of these steps involve communication and documentation 5. All of the processes are human brain simulations

    This article examines the future challenges facing Norwegian public libraries in light of legislative changes and evolving societal needs. Since the Public Library Act of 1986, with updates in 2014, libraries are mandated to be accessible cultural and educational centers. The 2019 national library strategy further emphasizes their role in public enlightenment and community engagement, particularly in the digital age. Despite high usage rates, challenges remain in attracting non-users and enhancing digital services. The article highlights the need for libraries to adapt to an aging population and to expand their role in public health, digital literacy, and community resilience. It underscores the importance of continuous innovation in library services to meet the diverse and changing needs of the community

    Time and The Catalogue

    This paper explores the multiple ways in which concepts of time are incorporated in cataloguing and classification to see how these temporal concepts influence how material is organised in library space. It discusses multiple concepts, including the structural influences of the capitalist ‘exchange-view’ of time in how the discipline is organised and its incorporation into the so-called ‘universal’ cataloguing systems. The continued issues of obsolescence within cataloguing systems as language and concepts constantly evolve, and how these are integrated into the systems themselves. The paper also discusses the semantic difficulties with how time itself is expressed within cataloguing systems, as time is one of the most widely expressive subjects in the English language. However, a significant amount of time related words are reliant on socially constructed context for their meaning, making them complicated to effectively express in cataloguing systems. Finally, it discusses how researchers have used the temporal issues in cataloguing as a way to examine the evolution of society and hold up mirrors to both the system and ourselves

    Modeling Context and the Characteristica Universalis

    This paper proposes prototypes for the exploration of the context of terms in a knowledge organization system by visualizing machine learning produced word embeddings. It puts this work in the context of the search for a universal language, typified by Leibniz’s characteristica universalis. This tradition of the search for universal languages is put in the context of universalizing tendencies in taxonomic classification in library and information science. Following this there is a discussion of the use of machine learning models to represent context. These two concerns inform the construction of prototypes for exploring the contextual spaces produced by word embeddings as a means to interrogating the act of classification in library and information science

    Documenting Sensation: Reimagining Urban Data for Equity and Sustainability

    This paper explores the historical and contemporary practices of documenting urban planning in Tampa Bay, emphasizing the role of sensory experiences in fostering sustainable and equitable development. Using the 1989 Future of Hillsborough Transportation Concepts white paper as a case study, the research critiques the dominance of efficiency-focused documentation in urban policy. This study highlights how such frameworks often neglect cultural and sensory dimensions critical to community well-being. The research calls for a shift towards documenting sensory experiences, drawing on the concept of the sensorium, to bridge the gap between technical data and lived urban experiences. The paper argues that integrating sensory and cultural narratives into urban planning can create more inclusive and responsive cities, as illustrated through the case of La Segunda Bakery and the community protests against highway expansion. This approach provides a more holistic understanding of urban spaces, advocating for planning methodologies that extend beyond economic efficiency to support vibrant and socially connected communities

    Pitching the Use of Squared and Interaction Terms in Regression via Baseball Heat Maps

    This project will examine the impact of using second-order terms in regression. For illustration, we use an example of regression where a baseball player\u27s three by three heat map, including the height and distance from inside to outside of the pitch, are variables used to predict batting average. We find that second-order terms are crucial in discovering nonlinear relationships and interaction effects in regression models, and maintain that the common practice of using first-order additive models is insufficient

    Robotic Gutter Cleaner

    Gutters redirect rainwater away from nearly every roof and home in America and Europe but build up debris over time and require constant maintenance. Manual gutter cleaning is unpleasant, time-consuming, and dangerous, with 80,000 injuries/year attributed to people cleaning their gutters and overreaching from ladders in the U.S. alone. This difficult situation implies that consumers would be interested in a method to make this process safer and easier. In an age of increasing automation of tasks, especially those that might be dangerous to complete, a gutter cleaning robot is a solution that could alleviate several of these problems at once. This project aims to complete a robot that can serviceably clean the most common style of gutter in an automated fashion, with a budget of up to 350 dollars. This robot being implemented in the field could lead to a reduction in injuries associated with gutter cleaning, a reduction to the work of a consumer cleaning their gutters, and even some interest in taking the idea further into the workplace, perhaps even pursing a patent
