A Reflective Case Study of Leadership Models in the Fight for Abortion Access

    Get PDF
This Essay presents a reflective case study on divergent leadership models in the fight for abortion access. Just as scholars study what is happening regarding abortion access, it is equally important to study how people advocate for supportive laws and policies, where they advocate, and who they center in the advocacy, so that tactics remain effective in a rapidly evolving legal, political, and social landscape. This Essay analyzes the “I Stand with Planned Parenthood” advocacy campaign of the 2000s as an example of a centralized and individual leadership model, and it identifies strategic strengths and weaknesses of that approach. This campaign was emblematic of abortion access leadership models before Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, models which dominantly centered prominent national legal organizations, such as Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). This Essay juxtaposes the “I Stand with Planned Parenthood” advocacy campaign with the state ballot initiative advocacy efforts of the post-Dobbs era. The expansive successes of these ballot initiatives caught national attention because of what they accomplished for abortion access. This Essay examines how leaders achieved these successes and who led these efforts through the contrasting lens of a collective leadership model

How the Intersection of Social Identities Shape Belonging at a Predominantly White Institution

    Get PDF
This study investigates the relationship between students’ perceptions of diversity, equity, and inclusion and belonging within higher education institutions with the aim of understanding how the intersection of multiple marginalized identities influences their experience. Recognizing that belonging is a fundamental human need and crucial for well-being and academic success within higher education institutions, the study acknowledges that students who identify with multiple historically oppressed groups are at greater risk of negative outcomes. These findings reveal statistically different perceptions of diversity, equity, and inclusion and belonging among undergraduate students, with those identifying with multiple marginalized groups reporting a less positive experience than those without marginalized identities. Keywords: intersectionality, higher education, belonging, diversity, equity, and inclusio

Methodological and Data-Driven Approaches for Analyzing and Enhancing Campus Camera Coverage at the University of Akron

    Get PDF
This Honors Project presents both a methodological and data-driven approach to analyzing, calculating, and enhancing the camera coverage on The University of Akron\u27s (UA) campus using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The project uses spatial crime mapping with camera coverage analysis to support The University of Akron Police Department (UAPD) in determining surveillance gaps and suggesting strategic improvements. The goal is to develop a replicable framework for evaluating and improving camera coverage in crime hotspots using spatial analysis and viewshed analysis. The findings in this project give a usable guide for using data to improve security camera placement according to maps of crime hotspots

Exploring Familial Lymphoma and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

    Get PDF
This project aims to investigate the familial incidence of lymphoma and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) within the patient population at Gabrail Cancer Center (GCC). Using the Electronic Medical Record from the past ten years, patients with current or historical diagnoses of lymphoma or CLL will be identified and surveyed (along with using patient records, including consult notes, hospital notes, MD notes, etc.) to extract any family history of these cancers. The project will analyze clinical outcomes in these cases, and analyze whether there were multiple family members to have been affected by lymphoma or CLL (or other cancers), and see if there are any patterns. A potential additional component of this project will be to compare the findings from GCC patients with national and international data. This comparative analysis aims to identify patterns and potential genetic predispositions, ultimately contributing to a better understanding of familial cancer risks and informing future screening and prevention strategies

Ingestion of Expanded Polystyrene by Procambarus spp: A Toxicology Report

    Get PDF
This project aims to be a toxicology report into the ingestion of expanded polystyrene by Procambarus spp. The goal would be to prove that ingestion of this plastic could lead to harm of the crayfish and that its presence in the environment of the crayfish could be a serious ecological problem. This project will take three groups of ten crayfish each and over a period of approximately seven weeks the crayfish will be monitored for changes due to their respective treatments. One group will serve as the control and will have nothing unique happen to them, one will serve as the plastic group and will be fed expanded polystyrene in addition to their normal foods, and the last group will be a positive control that is fed styrene in addition to their normal foods, styrene being the extremely toxic monomer of polystyrene. After seven weeks of feeding and observation the crayfish will be dissected and thoroughly checked for treatment related issues and abnormalities

Personal Jurisdiction and the Fifth Amendment

    No full text
The Supreme Court has avoided clarifying the relationship between federal-court personal jurisdiction, congressional statutes, and the Fifth Amendment. Until now, that is. In June 2025, the Court decided two important cases involving constraints on a federal court’s exercise of personal jurisdiction outside of Rule 4(k)(1)(A), which typically ties federal-court personal jurisdiction to state-court personal jurisdiction. This brief essay explains and analyzes those cases, situating them in the Court’s larger agenda for personal jurisdiction. It also discusses some open questions raised by the decisions and the role that personal jurisdiction in the United States may now play on the global stage

    No full text
We began the FanLIS project in 2020, as a basis from which to study, understand and progress information communication as it relates to fan works. Most of us are fans of something, and thus we all have the potential to appreciate and enjoy the fiction, artwork, music, poetry, plays, games and interactive experiences crafted by creative fans within our area of interest, in both analogue and digital formats. Fandom is perhaps the ultimate inclusive discipline. Library and information science (LIS) theory and practice consider authorship, publication, distribution, indexing, access, storage, preservation, document and management related policies, use, reception and understanding of fan works; these categories, applicable to any discipline, embody the expertise of information professionals, and collectively comprise the information communication chain
