What Motivates Selectors to Pick a Woman Justice?
This article examines increases in women’s appointment to high courts around the world. It builds on research suggesting that movement by countries to appoint the first women to important benches often influenced neighboring countries. The same authors here look at the related feature that women in advanced industrial countries are appointed to constitutional and supreme courts sooner when subject to electoral pressure. They suggest that electoral pressure is not defined by the left-right ideological spectrum, but rather depends on a more specific support for gender equality
Age-related Ultrastructural Differences in the Dorsal Cortex of the Inferior Colliculus in the Fischer Brown Norway Rat
The inferior colliculus is a nucleus in the auditory midbrain that plays an important role in sound and speech processing through how it encodes temporal precision. Temporal precision depends on the balance of inhibition and excitation within the IC. This balance degrades during aging. Age-related changes in synapses have been described in the lemniscal IC as a contributing factor for this imbalance. However, it is unknown if aging affects synapses throughout the non-lemniscal IC in a similar manner. We sought to determine this by examining the dorsal cortex of the IC. The ICd is a non-lemniscal nucleus that is well known for its extensive innervation by the auditory cortex. Electron microscopy techniques were used across age groups of young 2–3 months, middle 19–21 months and older age 27–29 months Fischer Brown Norway rats. Our data demonstrates a small loss of GABAergic synaptic density in middle age, with a significant loss during older age. We also demonstrate decreases with age in terminal area and mitochondrial ultrastructure across both synaptic types. Collectively our data suggest a net loss of inhibition in the ICd. Thus, the balance of excitation and inhibition in the ICd is likely altered and may contribute to factors underlying age-related hearing loss
Reflective Observations of Instructional Approaches in Job Coaching: A Personal Perspective on Student-Centered Strategies for Students with Disabilities
This project is a reflective case study exploring my personal experiences as a job coach for students with disabilities at Total Education Solutions. The research focuses on my own observations, interpretations, and emotional responses while alternating between student-centered and teacher-directed instructional approaches during workforce readiness sessions. By journaling daily, I will analyze how I perceive student engagement, task completion, and session flow under different coaching styles. The consistent student group, task structure, and session format will allow for focused, qualitative reflection without collecting any student-specific data. The study aims to deepen my understanding of instructional decision-making in real-world coaching settings and foster my growth as an educator. The final product will be a written report submitted to the Honors College and may also be presented to an educational audience. This project integrates theory and practice, builds on my undergraduate coursework in education and highlights the role of reflective teaching in promoting ethical, student-centered learning environments
The Effects of Habitual Temperature and Diet on Crayfish Physiological Processes
We will use crayfish to test the individual and combined effects of temperature and diet to see how they impact physiological processes such as metabolism, growth rate, molting patterns, and behavioral analysis. A total of forty-eight crayfish will be used throughout the experiment, and they will be housed in separate containers. A plant-based diet (consisting of fresh kale) and an animal-based diet (consisting of dried bloodworms) will be tested alongside room temperature (~18 degrees Celsius) and a warmer habitual temperature (~24 degrees Celsius). Metabolism will be measured via O2 consumption, and growth will be measured by weighing and measuring the crayfish with a ruler. Behavior will be measured by observing tail flips and retreats. Molting will be measured by visual analysis each week. Many controls will be in place such as pH of the water, temperature, timing of measurements, and more, to ensure proper data. The project will be started in week one of the fall semester and will take approximately five weeks to finish data collection. Additional weeks are built in for extra data collection and for the formal write-up up as well as time for presentation
