    Boston City Hall

    No full text
Boston City Hall is the centerpiece of Government Center which consists of both commercial and civic buildings. Construction began on the site in 1963 and was completed in 1969. Kallman, McKinnell and Knowles designed the building. The architects and the Brutalist style design have been criticized over the years, yet they have also been recognized for their departure from conventionality. Recent plans have been proposed for a relocation of city offices and demolition of the controversial building. Boston City Hall features several art galleries featuring collections by artists who have been recognized for their work through awards and grants, and collections created by community art organizations.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1338/thumbnail.jp

Anchored by Norfolk Scope, the northern corner of town is shown in the aerial photograph. Retail shops outlets dominate the area. Throughout the twentieth century shopping centers in the suburbs continued to draw commerce away from the city. Get PDF
In this paper, we examine the ways that early adolescents talked, interacted, and made references to events in their individual and collective lives during photography-based focus groups about sexuality and relationships. Twenty-three participants (10 boys and 13 girls) were recruited from three urban schools participating in a comprehensive sex education impact evaluation in the Northeast. We analyzed conversational narratives that were elicited in a group process while sharing photos of important people, contexts, and situations, showcasing participants\u27 exploration of sexuality and relationships. Our analysis revealed four main themes: (a) Direct and indirect family communication about sexuality, (b) Accidental and intentional Internet usage, (c) Shared and contested peer knowledge, and (d) School as a direct and indirect learning context. Implications and future directions for practice, research, and policy are explored

From Rapists to Superpredators: What the Practice of Capital Punishment Says About Race, Rights and the American Child

    Get PDF
At the turn of the 20th century, the United States was widely considered to be a world leader in matters of child protection and welfare, a reputation lost by the century’s end. This paper suggests that the United States’ loss of international esteem concerning child welfare was directly related to its practice of executing juvenile offenders. The paper analyzes why the United States continued to carry out the juvenile death penalty after the establishment of juvenile courts and other protections for child criminals. Two factors allowed the United States to continue the juvenile death penalty after most states in the international system had ended the practice: the politics of American federalism and a system of racial subordination that excluded some juvenile offenders from the umbrella of child protection measures, a conclusion suggesting that racial prejudice has interfered with U.S. compliance with international norms of child welfare and juvenile justice

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a weight gain benefit and earlier achievement to full feedings in the single family room NICU design compared to the multi-bed NICU design. A retrospective chart review of infants less than 1000 grams born during a three month time frame in both the multi-bed unit and single family unit was conducted. The study compared average daily weight gain and achievement to full feedings in the multi-bed unit and single family room unit. Findings concluded there was a slight difference in the average daily weight gain and achievement to full feedings occurred several days earlier in the single family room unit. In the single family unit the advanced practice nurses are able to promote a family-centered environment by encouraging rooming in, Kangaroo care, and breastfeeding, all of which were nearly impossible for the parents to accomplish in the multi-bed unit due to lack of space and pr1vacy
