Comparing Adult Males and Females in the United States to Examine the Association between Body Mass Index and Frequent Mental Distress: An Analysis of Data from BRFSS 2011

    Get PDF
There is conflicting evidence regarding the association of body mass index (BMI) with mental distress. Studies have focused on different dimensions of mental health and used different definitions and many of them have not controlled for confounding factors. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between frequent mental distress (FMD) and BMI among adults in the United States, with special emphasis on gender differences. Methods. Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for the year 2011 were used in logistic regression models to predict FMD, defined as having 14 or more days of poor mental health in the previous month. Sociodemographic factors, tobacco and alcohol use, diet and physical activity, and number of chronic diseases were controlled for. Results. 11.95%( = 53,715) of the participants with valid responses ( = 496,702) had FMD.The adjusted ORs of having FMD among underweight, overweight, and obese females were 1.13 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.60), 1.10 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.19), and 1.21 (95% CI: 1.13, 1.31), respectively, but they were not statistically significant for males. Conclusions. These findings suggest a relationship between BMI and FMD, independent of other variables. It may be useful to explore longitudinal trend in this association

    Woonsocket Village, Urban Renewal

    No full text
Woonsocket Village was built as part of city wide urban renewal in the 1970s. The neighborhood has 284 houses in an area that used to house 80. The housing project was built on a neighborhood in the Social Flatlands, previously it had been the Gaulin Avenue area. The construction of Woonsocket Village displaced many families and involved the razing of historic multiple family homes, but it also created more affordable housing for Woonsocket residents.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1951/thumbnail.jp

Eye on Ethics: Help! My Supervisor is Unethical

    No full text
Many social workers have encountered instances when supervisors or administrators have asked or instructed them to participate in, condone, or overlook unethical practices. Examples include supervisors who ask social workers to exaggerate service utilization data supplied to funders, ignore eligibility criteria for agency services to enhance revenue, and alter client records in advance of a site visit conducted by an accreditation agency. In these instances, social workers must make difficult ethical judgments about how they will respond to unethical requests or mandates

    Terrors of Girlhood

Since the birth of the genre, American horror filmmakers have posed female characters as prey and objects of sexual desire. Adolescent women in particular act as both the victim and as eye candy for viewers. From the damsel in distress to the rape victim seeking revenge, women in horror films exist to be antagonized, and so often, their exhibition of femininity and sexuality determines the severity of their suffering. Moreover, though the popular horror film narrative tends to explore the fringes of human nature, few horror films openly deal with the fears and concerns of women outside of threats to their physical being. In the past decade, the horror genre has produced a new crop of young female characters who challenge the tropes of traditional horror films by trading in their role of damsel in distress for the role of the antagonist and anti-hero. What’s more, these films deal with themes relevant to young women, such as body image issues, tumultuous relationships, and sexual repression. In this thesis, I analyze the popular American horror film Jennifer’s Body (2009), which features two violent female protagonists and explores the horrors of adolescent female friendships. In my analysis, I examine whether or not the re-imagined female characters in this film are a progressive reconstruction of gender, and identify ideological conventions of the horror genre that continue to denigrate femininity and female sexuality

A Study of Cape Verdeanness In Postcolonial Cape Verdean Poetry

    Get PDF
Cape Verdeanness is another name for Cape Verdean cultural identity. Postcolonial Cape Verdeanness refers to Cape Verdeanness as it has expressed itself since July 5, 1975, the first day of Cape Verdean independence. Postcolonial Cape Verdeanness has previously been described at length in the social sciences scholarship. Postcolonial Cape Verdeanness has previously been implicitly rather than explicitly represented in descriptions of postcolonial Cape Verdean poetry in the scholarly literature. This study is a first of its kind consideration of postcolonial Cape Verdeanness. It is also the first time Cape Verdeanness of any kind has been explicitly represented by means of a review of Cape Verdean cultural productions. The methods of this study include a review of the findings of the social sciences regarding postcolonial Cape Verdeanness, a review of the scholarly literature on postcolonial Cape Verdean poetry, and an analysis of a group of postcolonial Cape Verdean poems, including contributions from both the Cape Verdean Islands and the Cape Verdean diaspora. The findings of this study are that postcolonial Cape Verdean poetry provides a significant lens into postcolonial Cape Verdeanness that both overlaps and complements the lens on Cape Verdeanness provided by the social sciences. Furthermore, postcolonial Cape Verdeanness demonstrates a rupture from colonial-era Cape Verdeanness. Because of this rupture, Cape Verdeanness has now expanded to reflect universal concerns in addition to specifically Cape Verdean ones
