The Elusive Eastern Film Corporation of Providence, Rhode Island: Resurrecting a Footnote in Film History

    Get PDF
Eastern Film Corporation was a local studio but its films were distributed and screened throughout New England with the exception of Rhode Island. At least twelve of its films, of various genres, which seemed to have generous budgets for size of the studio, have survived. Eastern’s prime years of business were brief, 1915-1917. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the building in 1917 and the expenses it would cost to repair it too high for its original founder, Frederick S. Peck, a wealthy Barrington politician. Nevertheless, the studio staggered on throughout the 1920s

Eye on Ethics: Planning Ahead - Drafting a Professional Will

    No full text
A professional will enables social workers to plan for what happens if they die or become incapacitated. It spells out the steps that colleagues or other parties should take to ensure that clients’ needs are met in a timely fashion. This guidance can be particularly helpful when death or incapacitation occurs without forewarning. A comprehensive professional will should address several key issues

Eye on Ethics: Reflective Practice in Social Work - The Ethical Dimension

    No full text
Ideally, effective practitioners would have the ability to recognize and address ethical issues and challenges as they arise in the immediate context of their work, not later when someone else points them out. Put another way, social workers would have a refined “ethics radar” that increases their ability to detect and respond to ethical issues

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Concurrent Review

    Get PDF
Concurrent review may be seen as a relatively new quality improvement strategy or an improvement over an existing quality improvement strategy, but research is scant. This strategy incorporates several key elements of performance feedback, which may be broadly defined as sharing non-judgmental information to professionals regarding discrepancies between their actual performance and standards of care. The distinction between concurrent review and performance feedback is the timing of information provided. Concurrent review incorporates the provision ofmedical information regarding a provider\u27s performance during the patient\u27s hospitalization, so that the plan ofcare is altered. This study evaluated concurrent review by examining the impact on stroke measures and whether physician and nurse practice patterns in managing stroke patients were altered

    Alarm Fatigue: A Risk Assessment

    Get PDF
Alarm fatigue is the phenomenon which occurs when nurses become overwhelmed by the high number of alarms in the clinical environment. This is a significant patient safety issue as delayed or inappropriate responses can and have resulted in patient harm. The purpose of the observational study was to conduct a risk assessment of alarm fatigue at an acute care teaching hospital in Providence, RI. Observations of telemetry alarms and response were conducted, utilizing a standardized tool on two medical surgical units over a six week time period. Participants were 36 nurses working on the two units at time of observations. Alarms were quantified to determine the percentage of false, technical, valid, and nuisance alarms. Alarm frequency was calculated and average response time to critical and leads off alarms were determined. Nurses were found to be at risk for and experiencing alarm fatigue based on high alarm frequency, increased number of false and nuisance alarms, and a delayed response to leads off conditions. The findings in this study are consistent with what is occurring in healthcare organizations nationally, as evidenced by a recent Joint Commission Sentinel Event Alert about medical device alarm safety that cited alarm fatigue as a major contributing factor. Recommendations and implications are presented and discussed
